Spartans softball leads off week with Truckers

Weather pending, the Luxemburg-Casco softball team will make the drive to Bucholtz Park in Clintonville to take on the Truckers in NEC play.

The Spartans extended their winning streak to eight with 4-2 and 9-1 wins against Denmark on Friday. In game one, Josie Dorner went 2-3 in the game, while Kate Van Ess and Jillian Jorgensen each went 1-3 with two RBI. Erin Cherovsky went the distance for the Spartans, allowing two runs (2 ER) and seven hits while striking out four. Game 2 featured Payton Kaminski, Jillian Jorgensen, and Rylan Kaminski, all driving in two runs while Josie Dorner clubbed in one. Anna Vandermause was the only hitter for the Spartans with a multi-hit game. Cherovsky was even better in the second game, going the distance again, but this time only allowed one run on five hits.

The Truckers are on the opposite side of the NEC standings with a 2-9 mark (4-13 overall). Both of their conference wins came in a sweep of Little Chute on Friday, which snapped a four-game losing streak and a stretch where they were 1-13. The Spartans beat the Truckers earlier this season, 16-0.

First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.

Kewaunee's Bortolini ready for next step in NFL

It might be safe to say that Kewaunee's second favorite NFL team is the Indianapolis Colts after they made former Storm standout Tanor Bortolini the 117th pick of the NFL Draft this weekend.

Bortolini tested off the charts at the NFL Combine earlier this year after a career at Wisconsin where he also showed his versatility to play multiple positions along the offensive line. A video played on the Colts' social media feeds featured Bortolini lost for words knowing that has NFL dreams had been realized.

During his media availability, Bortolini talked about his excitement to learn from the Colts' veterans, specifically name-dropping Ryan Kelly and Quenton Nelson. "You want to have careers like those two," Bortolini said, according to an article on Colts.com. "They've done it for a long time at an extremely high level and they're some of the best to do it at their respective positions. So, to be able to work with guys like that, you can learn a lot from those two, like what they do to put themselves in positions to be as good and as successful as they are. I'm really excited to get to know and work with them."

Bortolini earned All-State honors as a left tackle during his senior year and also garnered the Packerland Conference Defensive Player of the Year award after earning lineman of the year honors during his junior campaign at Kewaunee.

Zephyrs run all over United soccer

The Sevastopol/Gibraltar United soccer team could not withstand St. Mary Catholic's offensive pressure on Saturday, losing 7-0.

The Zephyrs jumped out to a 5-0 first-half lead and only extended it further in the second half. Four Zephyrs players scored goals, including Audrey Wanless's hat-trick and Bitzy McCauley's brace.

Despite the high goal total, it could have been worse without the United's good goalkeeping, which stopped 19 of the 26 shots made by the Zephyrs.

Timber Rattlers Hold On To Win Fourth Straight Game

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers rallied to take a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth inning and nursed that one-run advantage all the way to the final out to defeat the Peoria Chiefs at Dozer Park on Saturday night.  Eduarqui Fernández went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored and Terence Doston delivered another key hit for the Rattlers.

The Chiefs (7-13) had two outs with none on base in the bottom of the second when Anyelo Encarnacion drew a walk against Rattlers starting pitcher Alexnder Cornielle.  William Sullivan looked like he had grounded in the to the final out of the inning, but a bad hop turned his grounder into a single to extend the inning.  Cornielle looked like he got out of the inning again, but a grounder off the bat of Brody Moore eluded two Wisconsin infielders and trickled into left for an RBI single.

Peoria starter Pete Hansen fell into the same pattern in the top of the third inning.  Hansen retired the first two batters of the frame.  Jadher Areinamo lined a single to right.  Gregory Barrios and Luke Adams kept the inning going by drawing walks to load the bases.  Fernández doubled to right-center to score all three runners for a 3-1 lead.

Zach Levenson had a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third to tighten up the score.

The game became interesting and emotional with two outs in the top of the fifth inning.  Barrios was at first and was going on Hansen’s first movement.  Unfortunately, as Barrios took off for second as Hansen threw to first.  William Sullivan, the first baseman, took the throw and fired to second base for what the Chiefs thought would be the final out of the inning.  Barrios was ruled safe.  Chiefs second baseman Dakota Harris disagreed and was ejected.

Wisconsin (14-6) could not take advantage of the break and the game went to the bottom of the fifth with the Rattlers still up 3-2.

Darlin Moquette started the Chiefs fifth with a double, but he was picked off second base by Cornielle.  The Rattlers right-hander got a strikeout for the second out but gave up a single to Levenson to end his night.  The call went to Craig Yoho to get the final out of the fifth and protect the lead.

Yoho, who had walked one and struck out fifteen in his first seven outings of the season, walked Leonardo Bernal on a 3-2 pitch to keep the inning alive.  Osvaldo Tovalin, the player who replaced Harris after the ejection, lined the first pitch he saw to center to score the tying run and send Bernal to third with the go-ahead run.

Tovalin figured into the go-ahead run to as he broke for second with Anyelo Encarnacion at the plate.  Catcher Ram?n Rodríguez lost the ball out of his mitt as he went to throw to second.  Bernal broke for home when he saw the ball in the grass, and he ran straight through the plate and into the Peoria dugout on the first base side of the field after avoiding Yoho’s tag to score the go-ahead run.

The Rattlers fought back in the top of the sixth inning to retake the lead, but it was touch-and-go for a bit.  Fernández singled for his third hit of the game to start the inning.  Jesús Chirinos doubled down the line in with one out to put runners at second and third.  Peoria went to their bullpen and replaced Hansen with Joseph King.

Jheremy Vargas fell behind 1-2 before sending a grounder under the glove of King to second.  It was enough.  The only play was to first base as Fernández scored the tying run.  Doston followed with a sharp single to center to send Chirinos home for a 5-4 lead.

Brian Fitzpatrick took over on the hill for the Rattlers and sent down the Chiefs in order in the sixth and seventh innings.  Peoria threatened with a pair of infield singles sandwiched around a sacrifice bunt in the eighth.  Fitzpatrick escaped with a strikeout and a foul pop.

In the ninth, Fitzpatrick got the first two outs before Won-Bin Cho reached on another infield single.  That was all for Fitzpatrick, who struck out four without a walk in 3-2/3 innings.

Will Childers came on to close the game and picked up his first professional save on his second pitch.  Cho, who was 5-for-5 in stolen base attempts this season, broke for second on a 1-0 pitch to Levenson.  Rodríguez threw a strike to Areinamo covering at second and Cho was out by a wide margin to end the game.

The Timber Rattlers have won four games in a row.  Saturday’s win also clinched Wisconsin’s fourth straight series to open the season.

The series finale at Dozer Park is Sunday afternoon.  Edwin Jimenez (3-0, 4.50) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  The Chiefs have named Inohan Paniagua (1-1, 4.05) as their starter.  Game time is 2:05pm CDT.

Packers draft OL Morgan

Rather than trying to address the improved offensive weapons of the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings, the Green Bay Packers opted to protect their own with the 25th Pick of the NFL Draft on Thursday.

The Packers selected Arizona tackle Jordan Morgan with the pick, addressing a need on the offensive line. According to Packers.com, Morgan (6-5, 311) started 37 games at left tackle in his college career, including 33 in the last three seasons. He made an impressive recovery from a torn ACL toward the end of the 2022 season to start 12 games at left tackle in 2023 and earn first-team All-Pac-12 Conference honors.

The Packers are scheduled to have four picks when the NFL Draft restarts at 6 p.m.:

Round 2, pick 41 (from the Jets in Aaron Rodgers trade)
Round 2, pick 58
Round 3, pick 88
Round 3, pick 91 (from the Bills in Rasul Douglas trade)

Gibraltar's Salm, Sturgeon Bay wins recent Packerland golf stop

While the individual winner has been consistently inconsistent, the Sturgeon Bay golf team has held onto the top spot at Packerland Golf Tour stops all season long, including Thursday at Idlewild Golf Course in Sturgeon Bay.

The Clippers shot a 180, 15 strokes better than second-place Gibraltar and 17 strokes superior than third place Southern Door. Tre Wienke shared second place with the Eagles' Finley LaVine (41) and Luke Selle tied Kewaunee's Evan Maccaux at 43.

Gibraltar's Finn Salm turned in the best scorecard of the afternoon as he shot a 39.

Gamblers look to advance against Lumberjacks

The Green Bay Gamblers are in do-or-die mode Friday night when they take on the Muskegon Lumberjacks in a winner-take-all game five.

The Gamblers earned the new breath of life when they beat the Lumberjacks 2-1 in game four of the Clark Cup Playoffs Wednesday night. It looked like the game might go to overtime before Jayson Shaugabay buried a pass from Blake Bechen for a power-play goal with just over 30 seconds remaining in the game.

Game five will take place on Friday in Muskegon at 6:10 p.m.

The Peoria Chiefs hit two home runs on Thursday night at Dozer Park.  The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scraped and clawed for five runs.  Luis Lara drove in a pair of runs without swinging the bat and Gregory Barrios drove in two runs without getting the ball out of the infield.  Those runs, another run scoring on a wild pitch, and stellar relief pitching were enough for the Rattlers to record a 5-3 victory over Peoria.

Dakota Harris gave the Chiefs (7-11) a lead with a one-out, solo home run in the second inning.  Harris has homered twice in the series.

Wisconsin (12-6) answered in the top of the third as they loaded the bases against Peoria starter Cooper Hjerpe with no outs.  Eduarqui Fernández singled, Ben Metzinger walked, and Terence Doston singled to start the inning.  Lara was hit by a pitch with one out to force in the tying run.  Barrios grounded into a force play at second but beat the throw to first to allow Metzinger to score and Doston to take third.  Moments later, Doston scored on a wild pitch by Hjerpe for the final run of the inning.

Peoria tied the game with the long ball in the bottom of the fifth.  Joshua Baez cracked a two-out homer to left-center with one out to even the score 3-3.

Wisconsin starter Will Rudy allowed another hit before retiring the next two batters to keep the game tied.  Rudy allowed three runs on six hits with no walks and six strikeouts.

The Timber Rattlers bullpen was quick and efficient after taking over for Rudy in the sixth inning.  Will Childers retired the Chiefs in order on twelve pitched.  Aaron Rund took over in the bottom of the seventh and pitched a perfect inning with just nine pitches.  Chase Costello took the ball for the Rattlers in the bottom of the eighth.  He also worked a perfect inning on nine pitches.

The Rattlers went back in front in the top of the seventh with another bases-loaded rally.  Fernández started the rally with a one-out single against Peoria reliever Cade Winquest.  Doston drew a two-out walk.  Then, Dylan O’Rae sent a high chopper to the edge of the infield behind the second base bag and beat the throw to first to load the bases with an infield single.  Lara drew a four-pitch walk from Winquest to force in Fernández with the go-ahead run.

Barrios added an insurance with a fortunate bounce.  The Wisconsin shortstop hit a hard hopper back through the middle.  Winquest just missed the ball with a swipe of his glove behind his back.  The ball clipped off the second base bag just enough to throw off Harris’s attempt to field the ball.  The infield single scored Doston for a 5-3 lead.

Costello went back out for the bottom of the ninth to nail down the victory.  Harris reached on an infield single with one out to bring the tying run to the plate for the Chiefs.  Costello ended the game when he got William Sullivan to ground the ball behind second.  Barrios fielded the ball, stepped on second, and fired to first for the game-ending double play.

The Rattlers relievers pitched four scoreless innings, allowed one hit, walked none, and struck out two to close out the game.  All five Wisconsin pitchers combined to issue no walks in a game for the first time this season.

Wisconsin has won two in a row to take a 2-1 series lead over the Chiefs in the six-game series.

Game four of the series is scheduled for Friday night at Dozer Park.  Brett Wichrowski (0-1, 1.64) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Peoria’s starting pitcher is scheduled to be Hancel Rincon (1-0, 1.93).  Game time is 7:05pm CDT.

The Luxemburg-Casco track team will have hosting duties on Thursday when they welcome several teams for the Spartan Invitational.

Denmark, Oostburg, Sevastopol, Southern Door, and Two Rivers will also be participating in the meet when it begins at 4 p.m.

Storms that rolled through the area on Tuesday prevented the Spartans from participating in their scheduled track meet.

The Southern Door track teams posted the top scores in Monday's Door County Classic hosted at Sevastopol. The Eagles boys won 11 events, and the girls captured the top spot in five events, respectively, in their wins. For the boys, Zack Lynch (100m and 200m), Mason Motquin (400m), Ben Grota (800m, 3200m, 1600m), Damontrae Meeks (300m hurdles), Grant Pieschek (pole vault) and Alaric Urban (triple jump and long jump) winning their events. Frankie Nellis matched Urban's feat by winning the same two events on the girls' side. Danica Neville (pole vault), and Elise Jackson (100m hurdles) also won their events.

The Sevastopol track team had hosting duties for this year's Door County Classic Track Meet, boasting one event champion along the way. Cassie Rankin posted a new personal record of 29 feet 5 inches in the shot put to win the event. The 4x400m relay team of Danica Werkheiser, Kylee Duessler, Caitlyn Hasenjager, and Caitlyn Fellner was the only other event win for the Pioneers for the boys and the girls. However, they did post a total of 11 top-3 performances to boost their point totals in the meet.

In other track action, Kewaunee and Algoma will head to Oconto Falls for a track meet beginning at 4 p.m. Coleman, Green Bay N.E.W. Lutheran, Hilbert, Laona-Wabeno, Lena, Marinette, Oconto, and Seymour also appearing.

In their pentangular on Tuesday they hosted, the Storm girls nipped Peshtigo 113-111 while the boys held a much more comfortable advantage over the Bulldogs 173-127.  Topping the leaderboard for the boys were Owen Carlson (100m, 200m), Christopher Cullen (800m, 1600m), James Joski (3200m), Braxton Riha (Shot Put), Kemper Robinson (Discus), Maddix Mueller (High Jump, Triple jump), and DJ Echos (Long Jump). Faith Gerdmann captured the lone win for the Algoma Track Team at the Kewaunee Pent on Tuesday. The race was delayed for over an hour due to storms in the area. Gerdmann cracked 33 feet for first place in the shot put while she threw over 96 feet in the discus to take second place. Brennan Buckman was the top-performing boy place-wise in the meet, coming in second place in the pole vault. Several members posted personal and season bests in the meet, including Mason Melohn (shot put), Isaac Yunk (discus), Aiden Moen (300m hurdles), Zoey Stuth (100m hurdles), and Emily Reif (300m hurdles) to come in the top three.

Gamblers force decisive game five

The Green Bay Gamblers will have at least one more game in their season after beating Muskegon Lumberjacks 2-1 in game four of the Clark Cup Playoffs Wednesday night.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first period thanks to the Lumberjacks answering an early Ben Poitras tally in the frame. It looked like the game might go to overtime before Jayson Shaugabay buried a pass from Blake Bechen for a power-play goal with just over 30 seconds remaining in the game. Chicago Blackhawks prospect Adam Gajan sparkled in the net, stopping 31 of the 32 shots he faced.

Game five will take place on Friday in Muskegon at 7:10 p.m.

Wisconsin Takes Down Chiefs in Extra Innings

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers almost let one get away to waste another terrific performance by starting pitcher Mark Manfredi on Wednesday afternoon at Dozer Park.  The Peoria Chiefs tied the game 2-2 with an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth inning after Wisconsin had led since the first inning.  Clutch relief work from Craig Yoho and a two-out RBI single by Jadher Areinamo in the tenth delivered Wisconsin a 3-2 victory.

The Timber Rattlers (11-6) took the lead with a two-out rally in the top of the first.  Gregory Barrios drew a walk and went to second on a wild pitch.  Luke Adams followed with a bloop single to right to chase Barrios across the plate for a 1-0 lead.

Adams added to the Wisconsin advantage in the third inning with a two-out, RBI double off the wall in right to score Luis Lara from second base.

Peoria (7-10) got to Manfredi in the bottom of the fifth inning.  The Chiefs had runners on the corners with one out.  Won-Bin Cho sent a weak grounder to first for an out to score the run from third.  Manfredi ended the inning with his eighth strikeout to strand the tying run in scoring position.

Manfredi allowed one run, walked two, hit one, and allowed four hits in five innings.  In his last two appearances, Manfredi has sixteen strikeouts over nine innings.

Tate Kuehner took over for Manfredi in the sixth and maintained the lead until the eighth.

Wisconsin’s offense had chances to add to their lead.  In the sixth, they had runners at first and second with one out.  In the seventh, Eduarqui Fernández had a lead-off double.  In the eighth, the Rattlers loaded the bases with two outs.  They did not score, and it would cost them.

Peoria’s Osvaldo Tovalin blooped a single to left with one out.  He moved to second on a weak ground ball that was the second out of the inning.  Dakota Harris sent a grounder to Adams at third for what looked like the final out.  However, the throw was wild and got past first baseman Ben Metzinger to allow Tovalin to score the tying run.

Kuehner got the final out of the eighth to keep the game tied.  The Rattlers went down in order in the ninth.  Yoho struck out the side in order in the bottom of the ninth and both teams went to extra innings for the first time this season.

The Rattlers nearly wasted their opportunity in the tenth.  Luis Lara started the inning at second base and moved to third on a grounder to the right side of the infield by Barrios.  Adams was next and hit a hard grounder near the third base bag.  Peoria third baseman Anyelo Encarnacion made the play and almost tagged out Lara as the Rattlers base runner scrambled back to safety.  Encarnacion still managed to get Adams at first for the second out.

That brought Areinamo to the plate.  He dropped a single to right on a 2-1 pitch to score Lara with the go-ahead run.  Areinamo went 3-for-5 in the game with three singles in his final three plate appearances.

Yoho went back out for the tenth inning with the tying run placed on second base for Peoria to start the inning.  Yoho got the first out on a popup and the second out on a grounder to Areinamo at second that allowed the tying run to take third base.  Yoho took all the drama out of the moment by striking out Leonardo Bernal on three straight pitches, including a called third strike to end the game and give the Rattlers the victory.

Game three of the series is Thursday night at Dozer Park.  Will Rudy (0-1, 6.23) has been announced as the starting pitcher for Wisconsin.  Cooper Hjerpe (0-0, 4.70) is set to start for Peoria.  Game time is 6:35pm.

Myers (0-1) took the loss but settled down and went five innings giving up only four hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

The Pirates added a run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Connor Joe off Brewer reliever Jared Koenig.

Brewer catcher Gary Sanchez cut the lead to 2-1 on a lead-off home run in the seventh inning, but that was all the Milwaukee offense muster in the game.

Pirate starter Bailey Falter (2-1) went seven strong innings giving up only Sanchez's homer and two other hits while striking out eight and allowing one walk in picking up the win.  David Bedner picked up his fourth save of the year to close out the ninth for the Pirates (13-11).

The Brewers (14-8) and Pittsburg will play the third game of the four-game series on Wednesday starting at 5:40 p.m.   Bryse Wilson (2-0) will get the start for the Brewers.

Karius's maiden name is Tetschlag, and her time with the Phoenix was spectacular. Individually, Karius was a first-team all-conference selection twice, the league’s co-player of the year, and made the all-defensive team her senior season. The team won four conference championships, made three NCAA appearances, and went to the program's only Sweet 16.

Wisconsin Shuts Out Cedar Rapids to Claim Series Victory

It was the pitchers turn to shine for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Sunday.  The Wisconsin offense combined for 27 runs on 27 hits over their last two wins over the Cedar Rapids Kernels.  In the series finale at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium, Edwin Jimenez and four relievers combined on a three-hit shutout in Wisconsin’s 2-0 win.

Dylan O’Rae started the Wisconsin first inning by drawing a walk. He scored two pitches later when Jadher Areinamo doubled to the corner in right for a 1-0 lead.

O’Rae, the Rattlers lead-off hitter, has reached base to start the first inning in five straight games.  He has scored in the first inning in four of those games.  The only time O’Rae didn’t score in the first inning during the streak was on Saturday when he was thrown out at the plate on a stolen base attempt.

Matt Wood drove in Areinamo with a sacrifice fly later in the first inning for a 2-0 advantage for Wisconsin (10-5).

That was it for the Rattlers offense.  After the first inning Wisconsin had two singles and didn’t have runner reach second base.  Five Timber Rattlers pitchers made sure that didn’t matter.

Jimenez allowed two hits and struck out four over five scoreless innings to earn his third win in three starts this season.  His defense helped with some big plays.

The Kernels (6-8) had runners at first and second with two outs in the third inning.  Ricardo Olivar sent a sinking line drive to center and Luis Lara made a sliding catch for the final out.

In the fifth, a single and a wild pitch put a Kernel on second with no outs.  Jimenez got the first out on a weak tapper in front of the plate that kept the runner at second.  Then, Keoni Cavaco sent a hard grounder to short.  Areinamo made a diving stop, held the runner at second, and fired to first in time for the second out.  Jimenez ended the inning with a strikeout to keep the lead intact.

Chase Costello was the first Wisconsin reliever, and he tossed a perfect sixth with two strikeouts.

Stiven Cruz was next man up for the bullpen.  He got the first out on a big defensive play on a tricky grounder by Dylan O’Rae where Cruz had to race over to cover first base and take the throw.  The next two batters reached on a single and a walk.  Cruz escaped the jam on a 6-3 double play.

Aaron Rund and Craig Yoho closed out the game in style for Wisconsin’s second shutout of the year.  Rund pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning on another sparkling defensive play by Areinamo and two strikeouts.  Yoho followed suit by pitching a perfect ninth with two strikeouts for his third save of the season.

Spartans wrestling goes to Division 1

Whether you call it an accomplishment or a punishment, there will be a new team state champion at Division 2 for wrestling after Luxemburg-Casco lost its appeal earlier this week.

According to WisSports.net, Luxemburg-Casco appealed their anticipated elevation to Division 1 after winning their second straight team state championship in their third consecutive appearance. Because of that success, they joined Fennimore, Prairie du Chien, and Coleman in moves to different divisions for the 2024-2025. Kaukauna has had similar success to those programs, but they are already at Division 1 and cannot move. While Fennimore accepted their fate, Coleman Luxemburg-Casco and Prairie du Chien tried stopping their moves through the appeal process but were ultimately denied. In fact, the WIAA denied 11 of the 12 appeals, only accepting the Albany/Monticello girls basketball team's request to stay at Division 5. Head Coach Chas Treml was asked about the likely move shortly after they won their team state championship, saying that they would be prepared for the challenge.

Wisconsin Pops Kernels 14-8

Mike Boeve and his .553 batting average were promoted from the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to the Biloxi Shuckers of the Southern League early Saturday morning by the Milwaukee Brewers.  Boeve’s now former Timber Rattlers teammates didn’t miss a beat as they bashed fifteen hits, drew seven walks, and stole five bases to race past the Cedar Rapids Kernels 14-8 on Saturday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.  Gregory Barrios led the Rattlers hit parade by going 4-for-5 with five RBI.

Wisconsin (9-5) took the lead in the bottom of the second on back-to-back doubles by Jadher Areinamo and Jesús Chirinos.  The Rattlers loaded the bases with no outs, but a double play left the Rattlers with runners at second and third and in danger of not adding to their lead.  Dylan O’Rae extended the frame when he drew a walk to reload the bases.  Then, Barrios lined a single to right to score two runs for a 3-0 lead.

Cedar Rapids (6-7) put their first two batters of the top of the third on base.  Wisconsin starter Alexander Cornielle struck out the next two hitters.  However, Rubel Cespedes blooped a 2-2 pitch into shallow center for an RBI single.  Cornielle walked the next batter to load the bases and the call to the bullpen was made as he was at 35 pitches for the inning.

Tyler Wehrle took over and gave up a three-run double to Danny De Andrade and an RBI single to Jay Harry to put the Rattlers down by two runs.

The Rattlers didn’t stay down for long as they exploded for five runs in the fourth to take an 8-5 lead.

Ram?n Rodríguez and Terence Doston pulled a double steal with one out to get runners on second and third for one out.  O’Rae knocked in both runners with a single to tie the game.  Luis Lara singled to center with two outs and O’Rae was going from first to third when the throw to third from the outfield sailed out of play to allow O’Rae to score the go-ahead run.  Luke Adams and Jadher Areinamo followed with consecutive RBI singles to cap the scoring in the inning.

The Kernels scored a run against Wehrle in the top of the fifth to cut into the deficit but that seemed to get the attention of Wisconsin’s offense again as they loaded the bases.  Barrios knocked in two runners with a double before Lara added a sacrifice fly for an 11-6 advantage.

Gabriel Gonzalez and Rubel Cespedes helped Cedar Rapids stage a two-out rally in the top of the sixth with an RBI double and an RBI single and the Rattlers were only up by three runs.

Wisconsin doubled that lead in their half of the sixth as they loaded the bases with two outs.  O’Rae was hit by a pitch with two outs to force in the first run.  Barrios sent a grounder up the middle and O’Rae beat the flip to second for what would have been the final out.  The speed of O’Rae got Barrios his fourth hit and fifth RBI of the game.  Lara drew a bases-loaded walk to score the final run of the game.

Childers didn’t allow a run in the seventh.  Jake Polancic tossed a scoreless eighth and Yerlin Rodriguez closed out the game with a scoreless ninth.

Barrios reached base seven straight times between the games on Friday and Saturday.  He is 13-for-18 with six doubles and eight RBI in the five games of this series with the Kernels.

Rodríguez, Eduarqui Fernández, and Doston, the 7, 8, & 9 hitters in the Wisconsin lineup, each scored three runs in the game.  Doston walked three times.

The Timber Rattlers hold a 3-2 lead in the series as they head into the final game of the series with the Kernels on Sunday afternoon.

Wisconsin has Edwin Jimenez (2-0, 6.55) as their scheduled starting pitcher.  Cedar Rapids has Darren Bowen (0-1, 19.29) as their starter.  Game time is 1:10pm.

Rattlers Find a Lucky 13 on a Friday to Beat Kernels

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers trailed the Cedar Rapids Kernels 1-0 after the top of the first inning on Friday Night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.  The Rattlers changed the game immediately as they scored eight runs in their first offensive turn on the way to a 13-3 victory over Cedar Rapids.

The Kernels (6-6) took the lead in the first inning on an unearned run.  Wisconsin starting pitcher Brett Wichrowski committed a throwing error on a grounder back to the mound and instead of two outs with no one on base, Cedar Rapids had Gabriel Gonzalez at second with one out.  Wichrowski got the second out on a grounder that moved Gonzalez to third base.  Gonzalez scored when Wichrowski committed a balk to put the Kernels were up 1-0.

Wisconsin (8-5) stormed back by sending twelve men to the plate in the bottom of the first inning.

Dylan O’Rae started the rally with a walk and a stolen base.  He would score on a throwing error off a grounder from Luis Lara.  Mike Boeve drew a one-out walk.  Then, Gregory Barrios doubled to left to score both Lara and Boeve for a 3-1 lead.  Matt Wood singled to drive in Barrios and that was the end of the line for the Kernels starting pitcher Miguelangel Boadas, who retired just one batter in his first start of the season.

Jacob Noble relieved Boadas and got the second out of the inning but walked the next two hitters to load the bases.  O’Rae in his second at bat of the inning beat out an infield single to drive in a run.  Lara followed with a two-run single.

Wisconsin’s final run of the inning scored when Lara stole second as Noble’s pitch home went to the backstop to allow O’Rae to score on a wild pitch for an 8-1 lead.

Wood cracked a three-run home run in the bottom of the second.  The homer was his first of the season to give him four RBI on the night.

Boeve continued his torrid start with an RBI single in the third inning for a 12-1 lead.  Boeve was 2-for-2 with a walk on Friday after going 3-for-3 with a walk on Thursday to reach base in seven straight plate appearances.  Boeve is 8-for-11 with three walks in four games of the series with Cedar Rapids.  He is also 21-for-38 (.553) with thirteen walks in thirteen games this season.

Cedar Rapids scored a run off Wichrowski in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Agustin Ruiz.  The Kernels had runners on first and third with one out in the inning before Wichrowski ended the frame with back-to-back strikeouts.

Aaron Rund relieved Wichrowski to pitch a scoreless fifth.  Brian Fitzgerald pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh before allowing a run on a one-out RBI single by Ricardo Olivar in the eighth inning.  Fitzgerald allowed nothing else in the inning thanks to consecutive highlight defensive plays by the defense.  Fitzgerald speared a liner back through the middle for the second out.  Barrios went deep in the hole to flag down a grounder and a strong throw to first for the final out.

Wisconsin put one final run across the plate in the bottom of the eighth when Cedar Rapids committed a two-out error with the bases loaded.  The Kernels were charged with four errors in the game.

Chase Costello pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to close out the game.

Boeve isn’t the only Timber Rattler having a great offensive series.  Barrios was 3-for-3 with two walks on Friday night.  He is 9-for-13 with five doubles.  O’Rae, who was 2-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored on Friday, is 6-for-14 in the series.

The series is even through four games with each team collecting two wins.

Adams and Areinamo Pace Rattlers Past Cubs

Luke Adams hit his first home run of the season and Jadher Areinamo went 4-for-5 with three stolen bases to lead the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to a 9-6 win over the South Bend Cubs on Sunday afternoon at Four Winds Field.  Wisconsin collected a season-high fifteen hits in the game.

Both teams scored four runs in the first inning.

Dylan O’Rae and Luis Lara opened the game by reaching base for Wisconsin (6-3).  Adams lined a three-run homer to left and the Rattlers were up 3-0 three batters into the game.  Later in the first, Ram?n Rodríguez doubled to drive in a run for a 4-0 lead.

South Bend (3-6) came back to tie the game in their half of the inning with some help from the Wisconsin defense.  The Cubs had a runner at second after a lead-off double by Brett Bateman.  Areinamo made a diving stop of a grounder up the middle off the bat of Brennen Davis.  However, Areinamo threw wildly to first base to allow Bateman to score.  A bloop single by Pedro Ramirez scored Davis with the second run of the inning.

Later in the inning, Brian Kalmer stepped in with runners at first and second with one out.  Rattlers pitcher Edwin Jimenez got Kalmer to send a grounder to Areinamo’s right.  The Wisconsin shortstop got over, but had the ball go through his legs.  The play was ruled a single and by the time the ball was back to the infield another run had scored and the Cubs had runners at the corners.  Parker Chavers tied the game with a sacrifice fly.

The Rattlers had chances to take the lead, but had a runner thrown out at the plate to end both the second and third innings.

In the top of the fourth, designated hitter Mike Boeve, the hottest hitter in the Wisconsin lineup, came to the plate with the bases loaded and one out.  Boeve, lined out to center deep enough to score the runner from third with the go-ahead run.

Areinamo made up for the fielding miscues in the first inning by following Boeve with an RBI single for a 6-4 lead.

O’Rae and Lara added to the Wisconsin lead in the fifth inning with consecutive RBI hits.  O’Rae singled and Lara doubled.  Adams got his fourth RBI in the game on an RBI fielder’s choice to score O’Rae for the 9-4 lead.

Jimenez settled in after the first inning and kept the Cubs off the scoreboard until a sacrifice fly from Kalmer in the fifth inning.  Jimenez allowed five runs on nine hits with a walk and four strikeouts before turning the game over to the bullpen to protect the 9-5 lead.

Tyler Wehrle and Aaron Run each pitched a scoreless frame.

In the eighth, Chase Costello allowed lead-off single to Rafael Morel.  Then, Ethan Hearn chopped a ball to the left of the mound.  Costello rushed to the ball and fielded it but fired wildly to first.  Morel scored and Hearn wound up at third.  Costello retired the next three batters to strand Hearn at third and the game went to the ninth with Wisconsin’s lead at 9-6.

Craig Yoho got the call for the bottom of the ninth and he retired the side in order with two strikeouts and a flyout to right for his second save of the season.

Boeve was 2-for-3 with a walk, a sacrifice fly, a run scored, and an RBI on Sunday.  He was 8-for-16 with eight walks in the six games against the Cubs.  Boeve has reached base in all nine games played by the Timber Rattlers this season.

Wisconsin base runners stole six bases in the contest as they won the series finale and earned a series win by taking four of six from South Bend.

The Timber Rattlers are off on Monday.  They return to action on Tuesday evening at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium with game one of a six-game series against the Cedar Rapids Kernels.  Patricio Aquino (0-0, 0.00) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Game time is 6:40pm.

Pioneers baseball gets split against Bulldogs

The Sevastopol Pioneers baseball bounced back from 8-1 loss in their first game in Peshtigo to beat the Bulldogs in game two 4-3.

In game one, the Bulldogs built up an 8-0 lead before Drake Olson registered the lone RBI for the Pioneers. Olson took the loss, allowing seven of the eight runs (4 ER) while striking out four. Caleb Klimek proved to be a pest for the Bulldogs, driving in two runs on two hits.

In game two, the Pioneers used two runs in the first and third innings to hold off the Bulldogs. Chase Haberli and Gavin Jorns each had two hits and two RBI in the game. Haberli earned the win with 6 1/3 innings of five hit ball, allowing three runs (3 ER) while striking out six. The Pioneers secured the win in spectacular fashion with a Chase Haberli throw on a relay from Gavin Jorns on a play at the plate by Logan Schuh.

Sturgeon Bay also played a doubleheader against NEW Lutheran, but no results were shared.

Gamblers nipped again out of regulation

The Green Bay Gamblers once again needed extra hockey to settle the score with the Madison Capitols, this time losing the game 3-2 in the shoot out.

Libor Nemec tied the game at 1-1 a piece early in the second period and Julian Lutz tied it up again late in the third period to force an extra stanza. After a scoreless overtime period, only Michael DeAngelo was the only Gamblers player to find the back of the net as the Capitols scored twice to take the game.

Gajan stopped 27 of 29 shots in the Gamblers loss.

Cubs Use Big Seventh Inning to Beat Rattlers

Felix Stevens hit two homers, including a grand slam in a big sixth inning, to lead the South Bend Cubs to an 11-3 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Saturday afternoon at Four Winds Field.  The Timber Rattlers held a 3-2 lead after the fifth inning but could not hold on as they dropped their second straight game to the Cubs.

Wisconsin (5-3) got on the board with three runs in the top of the fourth inning.  Mike Boeve, who had walked in the first inning to extend his season-opening on-base streak to eight games, singled to start the fourth.  Luke Adams drew a walk and – after a force play at second on a grounder by Gregory Barrios – Matt Wood walked to load the bases.

Jesús Chirinos got the first run home with a sacrifice fly to left.  Chirinos hit the ball deep enough for Boeve to score and Barrios to take third.  Then, Luis Devers, the Cubs starting pitcher, committed a balk to let Barrios score.  Eduarqui Fernández followed with an RBI double to left and Wood scored for a 3-0 lead.

Devers had pitched twenty innings against the Timber Rattlers over four appearances between the 2022 and 2023 seasons.  He had allowed just one run to Wisconsin prior to this afternoon.

Alexander Cornielle, the Wisconsin starting pitcher, retired twelve of the first thirteen batters he faced in the game.  South Bend (3-5) got to him in the bottom of the fifth.

Stevens hit the first pitch of the Cub fifth over the wall in center for a home run.  Yohendrick Pinango was next, and he lined an 0-2 pitch to the wall in right.  The ball hit the yellow line at the top of the wall but did not go out.  Pinango was out at second after he realized the ball was not a homer and tried to get in for a double.

Ed Howard restarted the rally by singling and going to second on a wild pitch.  Cornielle almost got out of the inning as he was 3-2 with two outs on Reivaj Garcia, the Cubs ninth hitter.  Garcia kept the inning alive with a single to right to score Howard and the Rattlers lead was down to one run.

The first two Cubs to bat in the bottom of the sixth inning reached on a walk and a single to end Cornielle’s day.  Reliever Jake Polancic took over and hit the next batter to load the bases.  Then, Stevens unloaded the bases with a home run to right-center for a grand slam and a 6-2 lead.

South Bend added three more runs in the inning after there were two outs.  Brett Bateman doubled in two runs before Brennen Davis doubled Bateman across the plate.  The Cubs sent eleven men to the plate, scored seven runs, and led 9-3 heading to the seventh inning.

In the seventh inning, Casey Optiz tripled with two outs to drive in the final two runs of the game.

The Wisconsin offense could not mount a comeback against the South Bend Bullpen.  Jose Romero took over for Devers in the fifth inning and retired all seven batters he faced – four by strikeout.  Chase Watkins pitched two perfect innings to close out the game for the Cubs.

Boeve is 6-for-9 with six walks in the last four games of this series with the Cubs.

The series finale is set for Sunday afternoon.  Edwin Jimenez (1-0, 4.50) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  South Bend has named Tyler Schlaffer (0-0, 0.00) as their starter.  Game time from Four Winds Field is at 1:05pm CDT.

Red Devils down United

The Sevastopol/Gibraltar soccer team could not overcome the Green Bay East defense Saturday morning, losing 2-0 at City Stadium in Green Bay.

The United held off the Red Devils' attack for most of the first half before succumbing to the home team in the latter stages of the game.

Ella Tarkowski and Tiviana Andropolis won the 100 and 200, respectively for the Sturgeon Bay Clippers.

Braden Sitte and McKailey Reisen piled up the points for the Gibraltar track teams at Tuesday's Sevastopol quad meet. For the boys, Sitte won the 100m with a personal record, the 200m with a season-best, took third in the long jump, and helped lead his relay team to a second place finish. WIll Lecy (100m, 200m) also earned top three finishes. On the girls' side, Reisen won the high jump and 100m hurdles. The Gibraltar Vikings baseball team rebounded from a 9-5 loss in game one to win game two 9-7.

United battles Red Devils on City Stadium pitch Saturday

The Sevastopol/Gibraltar girls' soccer team will visit historic City Stadium on Saturday morning to face the Green Bay East Red Devils.

The United earned its first win of the season on Monday, winning 2-0 over Little Chute. The United scored their first goal on a corner kick when Izzy Andrae headed the ball past the Mustangs goalkeeper to make 1-0 with 32 minutes left in the second half. With 25 minutes remaining, the United doubled their lead when Kaitlyn Conner dribbled past multiple defenders and tucked it underneath a diving goalkeeper.

The Red Devils secured their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over New London, improving to 1-1-0 on the year. CJ Ross scored a goal and an assist, while Sherlyn Grijalva scored the other goal to lead the Red Devils to victory.

Saturday's fixture begins at 10 a.m.

In Friday's action, Luxemburg-Casco and Peshtigo could count on the wind to act as a 12th player, but the Bulldogs took advantage in a 3-2 win Friday night.

Gamblers fight back to tie Capitols, fall in overtime

The Green Bay Gamblers fought back to tie the game in the second period, but the Madison Capitols had the last laugh with a 4-3 win in overtime to send the weekend set back to Resch Center on Saturday.

The Gamblers were down 2-0 when Lukas Peterson and Ben Poitras scored within seven minutes of each other to tie the game at two. Libor Nemec scored the go-ahead run in the first five minutes of the third period only to have the Capitols tie the game with five seconds remaining. Madison's Colton Jamieson sent the home fans back to their cars happy with a goal in the opening minute of the extra stanza to earn the victory.

The regular season finale at the Resch Center will occur at 6:05 p.m. Saturday.

Rattlers Win Streak Ends on Late Cubs Homer in Game 2

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers were six outs away from a doubleheader sweep of the South Bend Cubs and a six-game winning streak.  Jefferson Rojas had other ideas for the home team as he hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning in the nightcap of the twinbill to send the Cubs to a 2-1 victory over the Rattlers.

Both starting pitchers buckled but didn’t break.  Wisconsin starter Will Rudy faced traffic in every inning, but no Cub reached second base against him over 4-2/3 innings.  Rudy allowed three hits, walked two, and struck out three.  South Bend starter Sam Armstrong allowed three hits, including back-to-back singles by Gregory Barrios and Mike Boeve in the fourth inning.  He would strike out four without a walk over four innings to keep the game scoreless.

Terence Doston and Jose Acosta gave the Timber Rattlers (5-2) the lead in the top of the fifth inning against reliever Angel Hernandez.  Doston singled with one out and was running on the 0-1 pitch to Acosta from Cubs reliever Angel Hernandez.  Acosta lined the ball fair down the line in right for a double and Doston beat the throw home for the 1-0 lead.

Rudy went out for the bottom of the fifth and retired the first two batters before giving up a single to end his 2024 debut on 66 pitches.  Wisconsin reliever Stiven Cruz got the final out of the fifth on a popup.

The Cubs (2-5) started their rally in the bottom of the sixth against Cruz as Rafael Morel drew a four-pitch walk.  Cruz missed with his first two pitches to Rojas before getting a called strike.  Rojas jumped on the next pitch and sent the ball to the bleachers in left to give South Bend a 2-1 lead, their first lead in the series against Wisconsin.

The Rattlers didn’t go quietly in their last at bat with Yovanny Cabrera taking over on the mound for South Bend.  Jesús Chirinos started the top of the seventh with a double and was replaced by pinch runner Jheremy Vargas.  Doston drew a one-out walk to put the go-ahead run on bases.  Cabrera got the next two outs on force plays at second to end the game and the Cubs five-game losing streak.

South Bend didn’t have an at bat with a runner in scoring position in game two of the doubleheader.  Wisconsin was 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position in the nightcap.

The series continues with a Saturday afternoon game at Four Winds Field.  Alexander Cornielle (1-0, 3.60) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Luis Devers is set to make his 2024 debut for South Bend.  Game time is 3:05pm CDT.

Gamblers close regular season with home-and-home against Madison

The Green Bay Gamblers will bounce between two ice sheets in Wisconsin when they play at the Madison Capitols on Friday before welcoming them to the Resch Center on Saturday.

The Gamblers are stumbling to the playoffs, hoping to right the ship against their in-state rivals. They started their three-game series against the Youngstown Phantoms with a win but lost the final two games by two goals apiece. Playoff positioning is at stake if the Gamblers can earn a win or two. If the Gamblers finish as the 1 or 2 seed, round 2 games will be played on April 20-21. As the 3 or 4 seed, games will be played on April 15-17.

Friday's game begins at 7:05 p.m., and Saturday's takes place at 6:05 p.m.

Wicks earns extension with Green Bay basketball

Green Bay's Borseth calls it a career

After a combined 21 seasons across two stints at the helm of the Green Bay women's basketball program, head coach Kevin Borseth.

Borseth made the tearful announcement Wednesday morning inside the Kress Events Center, showcasing his impact on the program through banners commemorating appearances in the NCAA and WNIT tournaments and conference championships. In addition to his age, Borseth said it was becoming harder to recruit with student-athletes and parents asking when he might start considering retirement. He did not want to see the program suffer while he weighed on the decision.

"I spent 42 years of my life doing this and it's not easy. It's something I really loved to do. It's been a thrill," said Borseth. "To wake up tomorrow morning and not be the head coach… it's going to hurt. It's been a long journey, and there are many people to thank."

Chancellor Michael Alexander and Athletic Director Josh Moon both spoke of his legacy and the impact the had on the program, the department, and the community. Alexander announced that a street behind the Kress Center would be renamed Kevin Borseth Way in his honor. Moon says the search for Borseth's replacement was already underway, but that Wednesday was a day to celebrate the nine-time conference coach of the year.

"We are so grateful for his 20+ years of leadership, and the positive impact he has made on the student-athletes that have come through this program and all of the fans and friends of Phoenix women's basketball is truly special," Moon said. "It says a lot of about Kevin's character to make this decision now, considering the team we have coming back. He is always thinking about what's best for the program and this is another example of him paying it forward. Congratulations to Kevin and his family on a job well done, and the Borseth family will always be a part of the Phoenix family."

Baseball Roundup:  Gibraltar/Washington Island crushes Sevastopol, game two suspended

The Gibraltar/Washington Island Vikings jumped on the Sevastopol Pioneers for 13 runs in the first two innings. They never looked back, defeating the Pioneers 19-2 in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader.  Braden Kita scored two-for-two, scored four runs, and knocked in four to lead the Viking attack.  Giblartar took advantage of 15 walks by four Pioneer pitchers.   Bennett Isaacson and Aaron Brey also had two hits. Liam Lindenberg had two RBIs.  The second game was suspended due to darkness, with the Vikings leading 4-0 after three innings.

Bucks top Celtics, Giannis injured

The Milwaukee Bucks broke a four-game losing streak on Tuesday night by defeating the Boston Celtics at home 104-91. The Bucks got a much-needed win to stay in the number two spot in the Eastern Conference, but star Giannis Antetokounmpo lost the game in the third quarter due to a calf injury. He underwent an MRI to determine the severity of the injury, with the playoffs looming later this month.

The Bucks took control of the game early by outscoring the Celtics 37-21 in the first quarter and took a 63-43 lead into halftime.

Boston mounted a comeback in the third quarter after falling behind by 24 points.  Outscoring the Bucks 24-15 in the third quarter, the Celtics cut the lead to 11 in the final quarter.

Bobby Portis and A.J. Green hit some key shots in the fourth quarter to keep the Celtics at bay as Portis finished with 15 points and ten rebounds, while Green hit two long three-pointers to extend the Bucks lead.

Six Bucks scored in double figures, Patrick Beverly leading the way with 20 points and ten rebounds, and Giannis scored 28 points with 15 boards before leaving with the game with the non-contact injury.

Brewers top Reds

The Milwaukee Brewers evened the series with the Cincinnati Reds with a 9-5 victory on Tuesday evening at Great American Ball Park.

Brewer starter Joe Ross (1-0) went strong innings to pick up his first win since June of 2021.  Giving up only two earned runs on five hits, Ross struck out seven and walked only one for Milwaukee.

Blake Perkins and Sal Froelich led the Brewer offense with three hits and Christian Yelich stayed hot by knocking in three runs.  Milwaukee tallied 13 hits and took a commanding 9-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning.

The two teams will square off again in Cincinnati as Wade Miley will get his first start of the season on the mound in the third game of the four-game series starting at 5:40 p.m.

Baseball round-up: Spartans avenge loss to Panthers

Door and Kewaunee counties has dried out enough to allow baseball teams to take to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon.

Tuesday's slate of games features Sevastopol playing a doubleheader against Gibraltar/Washington Island (4 p.m.), Algoma traveling to St. Mary Catholic (4:30 p.m.), and Luxemburg-Casco facing Marinette (4:30 p.m.).

In Monday's action, the Luxemburg-Casco baseball team wiped away memories of Saturday's loss to Oconto Falls as they beat the Panthers 4-1.

Schools go their separate ways for track meets Tuesday

All seven of the area's track teams will be in action in three different locales on Tuesday afternoon.

Algoma, Gibraltar, Kewaunee, and Sevastopol will compete in Institute as part of two Packerland Conference meets. NEW Lutheran/Providence Academy, Peshtigo, Southern Door, and Sturgeon Bay will compete in Oconto. Both meets begin at 4:30 p.m.

Luxemburg-Casco will head to Waupaca for the North Eastern Conference meet featuring Freedom, Little Chute, Oconto Falls, and the host school. The first events there begin at 4 p.m.

Spartans baseball takes second crack against Panthers

Luxemburg-Casco baseball will play Oconto Falls on Monday in an effort to make up one of its weather-induced postponements from last week.

The Spartans scored single tallies in the final two innings, but it was not enough to overcome the Panthers in their first meeting of the season, a 3-2 loss at Capital Credit Union Park Saturday morning. The Panthers put the Spartans in a 3-0 hole thanks to an RBI single by Luke Gilbertson in the fourth inning and two more runs in the fifth. The Spartans chipped away in the game's final two innings. Braeden Schley had an RBI groundout in the sixth inning to cut the lead for the Panthers to two. Max Thayse drove in a run with a single, but on the same play, Bandow was gunned down at the plate to end the game and the Spartans' threat.

The first pitch from the Luxemburg-Casco Sports Complex is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Softball preview: Opening day a reality?

Some area teams hope the third time's the charm to get their 2024 season underway after a string of weather-induced postponements last week.

Monday's action includes Algoma visiting Crivitz (4 p.m.), Sevastopol battling Assumption (4:30 p.m.), Southern Door traveling to Valders (4:30 p.m.), Gibraltar hosting Roncalli (4:30 p.m.), and Luxemburg-Casco playing at home against Clintonville (4:30 p.m.).

Soccer preview: Sturgeon Bay, Sevastopol/Gibraltar kick off Monday

Door County's two soccer teams will leave town on Monday for their first matches of the week.

Sturgeon Bay will play at state-ranked Notre Dame for its second straight match on turf when they kickoff at 5:30 p.m.

Sevastopol/Gibraltar will head to Little Chute to take on the Mustangs for a 6 p.m. kick.

An O'Rae Kind of Day in Wisconsin Win

Dylan O’Rae’s two-run single in the sixth inning broke a 3-3 tie to lead the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to a 5-4 win over the Peoria Chiefs on a blustery Sunday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.  O’Rae went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and two RBI in the game.

Peoria (1-2) took the lead with a run in the top of the second inning.  Anyelo Encarnacion singled home Alex Iadisernia for the 1-0 lead.  The Chiefs loaded the bases with one out on a single and a walk.  However, Wisconsin starting pitcher Edwin Jimenez escaped the frame with a 5-3 double play.

The Timber Rattlers (2-1) charged back in front in the bottom of the second inning.  Jadher Areinamo tied the game with an RBI single.  Eduarqui Fernández drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly.

William Sullivan tied the game in the fourth inning.  The Chiefs first baseman lined a solo home run to the Peoria bullpen with two outs to even the score 2-2.

The Chiefs struck again with two outs in the fifth inning to go back in front.  Jimenez retired the first two batters he faced in the inning before he issued a walk to Leonardo Bernal.  Alex Iadisernia lined the first pitch he saw in the inning to right-center for his third double of the game.  Iadisernia was out at third base trying to stretch this hit into a triple, but Bernal crossed the plate to count the run for a 3-2 advantage.

Wisconsin answered in the bottom of the fifth.  O’Rae started the inning with a double but was still at second with two outs.  Mike Boeve didn’t let the chance go to waste.  Boeve blooped in a single to send O’Rae across the plate for the tying run.  Boeve went 5-for-8 in the last two games of the series with Peoria.

Jimenez walked a batter with one out in the top of the sixth inning before getting another inning-ending double play to keep the game tied.  He scattered seven hits, walked three, and struck out four over six innings for a quality start that put him in line for the win once the bats went to work in the bottom of the sixth.

The first three Wisconsin batters in their half of the sixth singled to load the bases.  O’Rae lined a single to center to score two runs for a 5-3 lead.

Wisconsin relievers Chase Costello and Stiven Cruz pitched around some traffic in the seventh and eighth innings but maintained the two-run lead.  In the ninth, Cruz got the first out but a walk and a double put the tying runs in scoring position.  That led to one more call to the Rattlers bullpen.

Craig Yoho answered the call with the game in the balance.  He allowed a sacrifice fly off Brody Moore for the second out to let a run score.  Yoho recorded his first Midwest League save by getting the final out on a grounder to second.

The Timber Rattlers had fourteen hits on Sunday afternoon as they won their second game in a row to take two of three games from the Chiefs in the series.

The Timber Rattlers are off on Monday.  They return to action on Tuesday with game one of a series against the South Bend Cubs at Four Winds Field in South Bend, Indiana.  Patricio Aquino is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  South Bend has not announced their starter.  Game time is 6:05pm CDT.

Blizzard roll Steamwheelers

The Green Bay Blizzard scored in every quarter and held onto its halftime lead in a 32-24 win over the Quad Cities Steamwheelers Saturday night in Moline, Ill.

The Blizzard scored the first three touchdowns of the game and led 20-3 heading into the final minutes of the second quarter. The Steamwheelers closed out the half and opened the third quarter with touchdowns but traded scores with the Blizzard the rest of the way to be denied the victory by their visitors.

The Blizzard's Skyler Perry scored three total touchdowns while throwing for 59 yards and running for another 67 yards. Jalyn Cagle made the most of his limited touches, rushing for two scores on four carries and 20 yards.

The Blizzard will be back in action on April 19th when they host the Sioux Falls Storm.

Gamblers drop final two games in Youngstown

The Green Bay Gamblers failed to win their series against the Youngstown Phantoms this weekend, losing the final two games 4-2 and 3-1.

In Friday's loss, Blake Bechen and Michael DeAngelo scored the opening goal in the first two periods, but the Phantoms always had an answer, including Breckin Smith's game-winning goal in the second period.

Saturday's loss saw Geno Carcone get into the scoring column after the Phantoms built up a 3-0 lead heading into the latter stages of the second half.

Spartans' comeback falls short against Panthers

The Luxemburg-Casco baseball team scored single tallies in the final two innings, but it was not enough to overcome the Oconto Falls 3-2 at Capital Credit Union Park Saturday morning.

Vikings split pair at Adams Friendship

The Gibraltar Vikings opened their season at Adams-Friendship this weekend with an 11-8 win over St. Mary's Springs and an 8-0 loss to Lakeside Lutheran.

In their win over St. Mary's Springs, the Vikings were buoyed by a six-run second inning that made it 7-5. A four-run third inning put the Vikings ahead for good, though the Zephyrs did tack on three runs in later innings. Bennett Isaacson, Aaron Brey, Luke Rericha, and Max Maltby all had two hits in the game, and Brady Kita got one three times via walks and scored two runs.

In their loss against Lakeside Lutheran, Kita got on base another three times, including the Vikings' lone hit. The Vikings kept it close through the first six innings before Lakeside Lutheran scored five runs in the top of the seventh to put the contest away.

Storm baseball split matchups in Mauston

The Kewaunee Storm baseball team came back from Mauston with a win and a loss, beating Spooner Rails 3-2 and Northwestern 5-2.

The Storm opened the game with a single tally in the second inning, with Conor Kilgore scoring. Northwestern would score three unanswered runs before Waylon Delain registered an RBI single in the top of the fifth inning. The Storm would get no closer as Northwestern piled on two more runs in the sixth inning. Brett Paulsen took the loss on the mound for the Storm, allowing three runs on one hit across four innings with four strikeouts and four walks.

In the second game, the Storm needed an extra inning to put away Spooner. The Storm scored one run in the fourth inning on a wild pitch, and Ethan Paplham scored on a sacrifice fly. After Spooner scored in the following inning, it wasn't until the eighth inning that the Storm's Hudson bunted home Paulsen to put the team ahead for good.

Spartans soccer shut out by Tritons

The Luxemburg-Casco girls' soccer team split their matchups this weekend in Green Bay, falling to Notre Dame 2-0 Saturday morning.

Goalkeeper Tabi Lemens made 12 saves in the loss for the Spartans as the team tried to focus on possession against the Spartans, who are ranked fourth in the state at Division 3. The Spartans were able to muster a few shots on goal but could not get one across the goal mouth.

Four-Run Fifth Inning Pushes Wisconsin Past Peoria

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers are in the win column.  Less than 24 hours after collecting one hit in their season-opening, 2-1 loss to the Peoria Chiefs, the Rattlers collected eleven hits in a 6-3 win on Saturday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.  The Rattlers broke a 2-2 tie with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on the way to their victory.

Wisconsin (1-1) grabbed the lead with a two-out rally in the bottom of the second inning.  Ram?n Rodríguez drew a walk to keep the inning alive.  Jesús Chirinos followed with a double to right-center to score Rodríguez.  Terence Doston was next, and he beat out in infield single to put runners at the corners.  Dylan O’Rae delivered another two-out hit with a single to right to score Chirinos for a 2-0 lead.

Peoria (1-1) tied the game in the top of the fourth inning.  Michael Curialle doubled in two runs with one out in the frame to even the score.  That would be it for the Chiefs against Wisconsin starting pitcher Alexander Cornielle.  The right-hander retired the next two batters of the inning to keep the game tied.

The Timber Rattlers broke that tie in their half of the fifth inning as the first five batters of the inning reached base and four scored.  Luis Lara started the rally with a single, his first hit of the season.  Mike Boeve, who had three hits on Saturday, also singled.  Then, Luke Adams was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Gregory Barrios swung at the very next pitch and his sinking line drive to left dropped in for a two-run double to give Wisconsin a 4-2 lead.  Jadher Areinamo was the next hitter, and he was also aggressive as he lined a two-run single to right to push Wisconsin’s lead to 6-3.

Jake Polancic, Wisconsin’s first reliever, walked the first two batters he faced in the top of the sixth inning, but got a double play and a strikeout to work a scoreless frame to maintain the lead for the Timber Rattlers.

The Chiefs picked up a run in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI double by Won-Bin Cho off reliever Will Childers.  Cho, who had three hits on Saturday, was the last batter to reach against Childers.  The Wisconsin reliever retired the final five batters he faced before turning the game over to Yerlin Rodriguez for the top of the ninth.

Rodriguez had eleven saves for the Carolina Mudcats last season and was a little shaky against the bottom of the Peoria order as a hit batsman and a walk brought Cho to the plate as the tying run.  Rodriguez regrouped to strike out Cho for the second out.  Then, Rodriguez caught Brody Moore looking at strike three to close out the game for a Wisconsin victory.

Cornielle allowed two runs on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts over five innings to earn the victory in his first start of the season.  Cornielle was a Timber Rattler in 2023 and didn’t pick up his first win of the season until his final start of the season.

The final game of the series is Sunday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.  Edwin Jimenez is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Peoria has named Pete Hansen as their starter.  Game time is 1:10pm.

Ten Thousand Officials Licensed, but Still a Significant Need!

This week, the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association has reached an all-time high of 10,021 licensed officials, with 17,376 individual sport registrations across fourteen sports – but there’s still a significant need for high school officials in Wisconsin!

Over 1,300 of this year’s licensed officials are high school students, compared to just 240 for the 2021-22 school year. High school students are only eligible to officiate non-varsity contests.

Many sports still have a significant need for officials:

  • Cross Country had just 319 officials statewide this fall.
  • Gymnastics has extremely low numbers of officials, with only 125 judges statewide for this past winter season.
  • Hockey had less than 500 officials statewide this winter.
  • Boys and Girls Lacrosse is in its first year as a WIAA-sponsored sport, so the WIAA is licensing officials for the first time. Since the boys’ and girls’ game have different rules, they are considered different sports and there is rarely crossover between the two. There are just 101 boys and 72 girls lacrosse officials statewide this spring.
  • Soccer student-athlete participation numbers are growing, but there are not enough officials to cover games, with just 1,177 individuals currently officiating. There are 260 girls teams and 270 boys teams this school year and each game required three officials.
  • Softball is still trying to catch up to the 2,220 officials that were licensed in 2010, as there are only about 2,000 individuals registered for this spring, but 200 of those are high school students.
  • Swimming and Diving had just 219 individuals registered to officiate statewide.
  • Track and Field is in need of newly trained, younger officials, as the average age of a track and field official is currently 62 years old. There are currently only 562 individuals licensed to officiate this spring, while track and field has the most student-athlete participants of any WIAA-sponsored sport.

To learn more about becoming an official or to register, please visit wiaawi.org/Officials/Become-an-Official.

Blizzard return to action on the road Saturday

The Green Bay Blizzard return from the bye week and head out on the bus to play on a bus to face the Quad City Steamwheelers Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.

In their last game, a fourth-quarter shutout of the Iowa Barnstormers helped the Green Bay Blizzard earn a 35-24 win on Saturday at the Resch Center. The two teams went back and forth all game before the final stanza, with a second-quarter field goal by the Barnstormers the difference. The Blizzard scored the game's final three touchdowns, including the go-ahead touchdown pass from Max Meylor to Harry Ballard and a rushing score by Jalyn Cagle in the fourth quarter. Meylor threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as he accumulated 135 yards of total offense. Darius Peterson led the Barnstormers with 73 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

Green Bay's Wicks receives national coach of the year honors

The accolades keep coming for Green Bay's men's basketball coach, Sundance Wicks.

Wicks received the Joe B. Hall National Coach of the Year Award on Thursday. The award is presented annually to the top rookie, first-year head coach in Division I college basketball.

"Sundance Wicks delivered in his first year in Green Bay," said James Wilhelmi, Executive member of CollegeInsider.com and Senior Analyst.  "He orchestrated one of the best turnarounds in the history of the Horizon League.  His unique approach and positive demeanor carried over to his players and the overall community, resulting in much bigger home crowds and the Phoenix winning 500% more games than the year before.  He is very deserving of the Joe B. Hall National Coach of the Year award."

The Joe B. Hall Award is named in honor of longtime Kentucky head coach Joe B. Hall, who was tasked with following the legendary Adolph Rupp at the school.

In Wicks' first year, the Phoenix went from a three-win team to one that went 18-14 overall and 13-7 in the Horizon League. As a result, the program saw its NET ranking soar, moving up from 362 last season to 227 this season.

Chiefs Chill Out Timber Rattlers

Neither the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers or Peoria Chiefs offenses got out to fast starts in the season-opening game between the teams at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium on Friday night.  The Chiefs took advantage of some Wisconsin miscues to score two runs in the third inning for a 2-1 win.

The Timber Rattlers (0-1) grabbed the lead in the first inning thanks to a bout of wildness from Peoria starting pitcher Cooper Hjerpe.  Hjerpe walked Dylan O’Rae to start the first, struck out the next two batters, but issued a walk and hit a batter to load the bases.  Matt Wood worked the count to 3-2 before drawing another walk to force in O’Rae with the first run of the season.

Hjerpe was removed from the game after that walk and Wilfredo Pereira escaped the jam with a strikeout to leave the bases loaded.

The Chiefs (1-0) broke through in the third inning against Wisconsin starter Brett Wichrowski.  Joshua Baez reached on an infield single and stole second to start the inning.  He would move to third on a grounder.

Won-Bin Cho followed with a flyball to left near the line.  Left fielder Jheremy Vargas raced over to make the catch but dropped the ball.  Baez scored and Cho reached on the play.  Cho stole second, stole third, and scored on a throwing error to give the Chiefs the lead.

Wisconsin could do almost nothing against the Peoria bullpen.  Pereira walked one and struck out six over 3-1/3 innings.  He gave up a lead-off walk to Eduarqui Fernández in the second and a lead-off single to Wood in the fourth.  Wood’s hit was Wisconsin’s only one of the evening.

Cade Winquest finished the game for Peoria with five scoreless, hitless innings for the save.  He also had six strikeouts while walking two.  Wood drew both walks one with two outs in the sixth and another with two outs in the ninth.

Wisconsin’s relievers held the line to keep the offense in the game.  Aaron Rund allowed one hit and one walk in one inning.  Brian Fitzpatrick tossed four no-hit innings with a walk and three strikeouts.  Craig Yoho pitched around a single and a walk with three strikeouts in the ninth inning.

The loss snapped Wisconsin’s four-game winning streak on home openers.

The teams combined to steal eight bases.  The Chiefs were 5-for-6 on stolen base attempts.  Wisconsin was 3-for-3 on steals for the evening.

Game two of the series is Saturday afternoon.  Alexander Cornielle is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Peoria has named Hancel Rincon as their starter.  Game time is 1:10pm.

Local teams hit the diamond on Saturday

Local teams will play baseball and softball for the second day in a row on Saturday after Tuesday's storm put a continuation of the season in doubt for a few days.

BASEBALL

There were no results shared from Kewaunee's action against Cumberland on Friday. The Storm will face Viroqua and Spooner on Saturday at the Woodside Sports Complex in Mauston.

No results were shared from their first game against Adams-Friendship, but Gibraltar/Washington Island was able to come back and get a victory against St. Mary's Springs 11-8. The Vikings were down 5-2, but one big inning later was all they needed to secure the victory, even with the Zephyrs staging a comeback with a three-run inning of their own. The Vikings wrap up their trip on Saturday with a game against Lakeside Lutheran.

Luxemburg-Casco drew the early game during a day full of NEC action at Capital Credit Union Park in Ashwaubenon. They play Oconto Falls at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

The first events are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

Gamblers open series with OT win

The Green Bay Gamblers responded to heartbreak by providing a little of their own in a 2-1 overtime win over the Youngstown Phantoms Thursday night.

Geno Carcone's first-period goal looked like it would be the only goal of the game before the Phantoms' Tomas Machu tied the game against the Gamblers with one of his own with just over 45 seconds remaining.

Michael DeAngelo took the drama out of overtime early, scoring less than 90 seconds into the extra frame to give the Gamblers the win in game one of the three-game set. The two teams play again on Friday and Saturday at 6:05 p.m.

Gamblers open three-game series against Phantoms Thursday

The Green Bay Gamblers enter the final stretch of the regular season with three games beginning Thursday night against the Youngstown Phantoms.

The Gamblers split a pair of close matchups against the Chicago Steel last weekend, including a 5-4 overtime loss in their last contest. The Steel scored the first two goals of the game, but then Ryan Humphrey, Chris Romaine, and Ben Poitras rattled off consecutive tallies to end the second period for the Gamblers with a 3-2 lead. After the Steel tied the game seven minutes into the third period, Mykhailo Danylov gave the Gamblers the slim advantage back. The Steel would later tie the game to force overtime before Michael Hagens delivered the game-winner seconds into the extra period.

Thursday's game starts at 5:05 p.m. while the other two games will begin at 6:05 p.m.

Sevastopol/Gibraltar soccer scheduled to battle Manitowoc Lincoln

The Sevastopol/Gibraltar soccer team is scheduled to open their season on Thursday in Manitowoc against Manitowoc Lincoln.

The United are coming off a 3-13-2 campaign last season, splitting their four games against other independent teams. They haven't played since June 1st when they lost to St. Mary Catholic in their WIAA Regional opener.

They played the Ships to a 1-1 draw last year. The Ships were 1-17-3 last season, losing to Divine Savior Holy Angels 8-0 in their WIAA Regional opener. They were held scoreless in all but six of their matches last year.

If field conditions allow, the game is set for Ron Rubick Field at 4:30 p.m.

Baseball, softball games postponed due to weather

Don't expect to see baseball and softball diamonds buzzing with activity on Thursday after Tuesday's storm left many of them covered in snow.

As of 5 p.m., Wednesday, Sevastopol's baseball game against Manitowoc Lutheran had already been postponed in addition to a JV showdown between Algoma and Sevastopol.

Still on the calendar is Luxemburg-Casco's softball team visiting Denmark. If it occurs, they will have their first pitch at 4:30 p.m.

The next best chance for baseball may be this weekend, with Kewaunee traveling to Mauston and Luxemburg-Casco playing at Capital Credit Union Park for games on turf fields.

Brewers fall to Twins

The four-game winning streak to start out the 2024 campaign came to an end for the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday afternoon as they lost to the Minnesota Twins 7-3 at American Family Field.

The Brewers jumped out to a 3-1 lead early, as Rhys Hoskins hit his second home run of the season in the fourth inning.

Minnesota rallied to score five runs in the seventh inning as the Brewers bullpen failed for the first time this year.

Joe Ross started for Milwaukee and pitched 3.2 innings of shutout ball but was wild in walking five Twin batters.

After Hobey Milner allowed one run in the fifth inning, setup man Joel Payamps (0-1) could only manage to get one out in the seventh inning as he allowed four runs on four hits, in taking the loss.

Sal Frelick collected two hits for the Brewers who fell to 4-1 for the season.

Minnesota was led by Alex Kirilloff who went four for four and scored two runs.  Ryan Jeffers knocked in four runs, hitting a three-run blast in the decisive top of the seventh inning for the Twins.

Milwaukee has an off day on Thursday before welcoming the Seattle Mariners to American Family Field for a three-game weekend series.

Bucks spellbound by Wizards

The Milwaukee Bucks dropped a road game to the lowly Washington Wizards on Tuesday night 117-113.

Digging a big hole of 15 points in the first half, the Bucks could not overtake the Wizards, who won for only the 15th time this year.

Milwaukee shot only 11/48 from the three-point line.  Despite Giannis Antetokounmpo scoring a game-high 35 points, with 15 rebounds and 10 assists, the Wizards hit key shots at the end of the game to preserve the win.

Kris Middleton added 24 points for the Bucks, but it was not enough as the Bucks lost, playing without Dame Lillard.

Washington was led by Corey Krispert with 27 points, as six Wizards scored in double figures.

Milwuakee (47-28) will now look to bounce back against the Memphis Grizzlies (25-50) at home on Wednesday.

Brewers top Twins, stay undefeated

The Milwaukee Brewers won for the fourth straight time by downing the Minnesota Twins 3-2 in their home opener at American Family Field Tuesday afternoon.

The Brewers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first three innings after Christian Yelich hit his second home run of the season.

Pitcher Jakob Junis started for Milwaukee and went four innings allowing only three hits and one earned run while striking out four.  The Brewers bullpen took care of the rest by going five strong innings and not allowing a hit while giving up just one unearned run.  Abner Uribe picked up his third save of the season and Elvis Peguero earned the win going two innings.

Bryce Turang went 2/3 with a double and a walk to lead the Brewer attack.

Milwaukee and Twins will face off Wednesday at 12:10 p.m. with Joe Ross getting the start for the Brew Crew as they look to go 5-0 to start the season.

Umpire Shortage Continues in DCL

The 2024 Door County Baseball League season will open with shortages in the umpire pool.  With retirements and relocations, the league is stretched thin on fielding eight umpires every week.

Umpire-in-Chief for the DCBL, Roger Van Lanen, urges anyone interested in becoming a baseball umpire to seek certification through the WIAA or document their experience to be considered.  Candidates will take the WIAA test and be required to have a background check. Umpires are compensated for each game they officiate.  The 2024 season kicks off on Sunday, May 12.  Van Lanen can be reached at (920) 609-2214 or rogervanlanen@gmail.com.

Whether behind the plate or in the field, umpires are key to a successful season of great home-town baseball. For love of the league, step up to the plate.
