Phoenix women and men get much needed road sweep

The Green Bay Phoenix men earned a first-round bye for the upcoming Horizon League Tournament with a 69-61 win over Cleveland State Tuesday. The women took care of business downing the Fort Wayne Mastodons 70-61.

Leading by more than 20 points in the game, the Lady Phoenix took a 37 to 19 lead into halftime, only to see Fort Wayne rally to cut the lead to four points in the second half.

The Lady Phoenix hung on thanks to four players scoring in double figures.  Jasmine Kondrakiewicz, Natalie McNeal, and Callie Genke all scored 14 points, while Luxemburg-Casco alumnus Cassie Schiltz added 10 more, including two key three-pointers.

The Phoenix used a balanced attack to down the Vikings in the men's game.  Marcus Hall led Green Bay with 12 points, while Foster Wonders and Will Eames knocked down 11.  Elijah Jones added ten points and 15 rebounds for the Phoenix.

Taking a 33-26 lead into halftime, the Phoenix men withstood a second-half comeback by Cleveland State to improve their record to 18-12 overall and clinch a fourth-seed in the Horizon League Conference Tournament starting on March 7th.

The rout continued in the second half as the Bucks outscored the Hornets 38-23 in the third quarter and took 96-49 lead into the fourth quarter.

Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 24 points in just 24 minutes of play, while Damien Lillard chipped in 23 points and nine rebounds.

Door County Baseball League Hall of Fame back on the field

After a five-year hiatus, the next generation of folks with an extensive background in county baseball history are on board to revitalize the Door County Baseball Hall of Fame.  With the loss of Jocko Rader in 2019, the pandemic in 2020, and the health issues of some other committee members, the DCBHOF sat on the back burner for a long time.  But now, the wheels are in motion and the committee looks to accept the first round of nominations this year.

One of the first goals of the committee is for the baseball community to understand that this is a Door County Baseball Hall of Fame that includes High School, Legion, and Door County League participants. It is not just Door County League baseball players.  It also includes individuals with a strong history with baseball in Door County, such as coaches, umpires, and others, not just players.

Nominations will be accepted through July of 2024 for this round of inductees.  Nomination guidelines include individuals with a minimum of ten years of baseball involvement in Door County, which can be a combination of Door County League, High School, and Legion baseball.  Nominees can include longtime players, coaches, umpires and community individuals with a long history of baseball involvement.  Nominees must be retired from playing full-time baseball for at least 5 years.  Include statistics and other facts available on nominees to ensure Hall of Fame integrity.  Provide as much information as possible in your nomination narrative.

Email nomination narratives to the Door County Hall of Fame Committee at dcbhof@yahoo.com. The deadline for 2024 nominations is Wednesday, July 31, 2024.  Questions regarding the DCBHOF can be directed to Jason Annis-Wild.  Follow Door County League Baseball on Facebook for HOF History, updates and reminders.

Phoenix men drop home finale to Penguins

The return of Noah Reynolds will not come soon enough for the Green Bay Phoenix men's basketball team after they dropped their second straight game on Sunday, this time to the Youngstown State Penguins 71-59.

The two teams played tight early on, with the Phoenix even taking a small lead, but a 16-5 run by the Penguins put the Phoenix in chase mode the rest of the game. The Penguins had nine more rebounds and six more steals than the Phoenix to give them the upper hand.  Elijah Jones and Marcus Hall each had 12 points on the day for the Phoenix, while the Penguins had five players in double figures, led by Ziggy Reid and Brett Thompson with 16 points apiece.

Julian Lutz had a three-point game (1G, 2A) to lead the Gamblers.

SBS' Lemieux, L-C's Ronsman and Delebreau go for gold at state tournament

Three local wrestlers will participate in Saturday's Grand March at the Kohl Center as a part of the WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament Finals.

The dream is still alive for Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol's Tiani Lemieux as she heads to the title match for 138 pounds. Her semifinal match was longer than her last few matches combined, but Lemieux secured the pin midway through the second period to earn the finals berth.

The Luxemburg-Casco wrestling team will have two competitors strutting out to the mats during the Grand March of the WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament. Max Ronsman secured his fourth straight trip to the finals after picking up a pair of decisions, while Caleb Delebreau will make his first trip. All of the other Spartans are in line for podium finishes with Jake Jandrin, Carson Blohowiak, Michael Bostwick, Blakelee Bastien, and Trace Schoenebeck picking up with wins in the consolation round after losing in the quarterfinals. Isaac Jerabek and Carson Neubert will enter their consolation brackets on Saturday after losing in the semifinals. Gibraltar boys close regular season Saturday with Hilbert

The Gibraltar Vikings boys' basketball team will play the final regular season game for the entire area on Saturday when they welcome Hilbert to Fish Creek.

The Vikings have lost four straight games since they swept a weekend set against Sevastopol and St. Lawrence Seminary earlier this month. That includes a 54-24 loss to Menominee (MI) Thursday night. Braden Sitte was the lone Vikings player to reach double figures with 10 points. Aaron Brey added five points and Will Lecy contributed four more in the loss. Saturday's game will include festivities for the team's two seniors, Braden Sitte and Marshall Maltby. Senior Day had to be rescheduled after Maltby became ill and missed two games against Sturgeon Bay and Algoma. Head coach Travis Ward salutes Sitte and Maltby's effort during a memorable time during the program's history.

The Wolves come into the matchup fresh off of snapping a five-game losing streak with a nail-biting 38-36 win over Sheboygan Christian. Kaelin VandenWyngaard leads the team in scoring 14.3 points per game and is second in rebounding with 5.5 boards per game. This will be the first of two straight games against Packerland Conference opponents for the Wolves as they will open their WIAA Tournament run against NEW Lutheran.

Tip-off is set for 2:30 p.m.

The Vikings will then focus on the tournament when they travel to Florence to take on the Bobcats for the second straight year. That game will be covered from Florence on 105.1 The GOAT and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the tip at 7 p.m.

One of the top-scoring teams in the conference did just that against the Green Bay Phoenix men Friday night as Purdue Fort Wayne won the game 85-59.

The Mastodons finished the game shooting 50.8 percent from the field thanks in part to outscoring the Phoenix 40-28 in the paint. Will Eames led the Phoenix with 19 points while Clarence Cummings III added 13 points, and Elijah Jones contributed 12 points.

The Phoenix men are back in the action, but the women will have their chance to right the ship again at the Kress Center on Saturday with a 1 p.m. matinee against Detroit Mercy.

The Kewaunee wrestling team will have two of its three wrestlers take the mat again at the Kohl Center as the WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament resumes on Friday. After Mitchell VanGoethem dropped his first match, Kemper Robinson earned a winning decision, and Mitchell Boeder registered a pin to advance to Friday morning's quarterfinal round.

Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol's Tiani Lemieux didn't need much time to advance to the semifinals of the WIAA Girls' Individual State Tournament on Thursday. Lemieux pinned both of her opponents in less than 50 seconds to advance to her next matches on Friday night.

Mason Motquin's time in Madison may be over, but Southern Door is still alive in this weekend's WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament. Hailey Veeser won both of her matches to earn a spot in the semifinal round of the Girls' 152 lb. bracket. Veeser will wrestle again on Friday night. Teammates Nora LeFevre and Sydney Turner registered pins in the first round before being pinned in the second round. The Green Bay Phoenix women's basketball team made sure there was no repeat of their performance in Oakland, Mich. on Thursday night, trouncing the Golden Grizzlies 74-45.

After losing their previous matchup on a last-second layup, the Phoenix outscored the Golden Grizzlies 18-5 in the first quarter and 15-9 in the second quarter to build up a big advantage at the break.  Maddy Schreiber and Bailey Butler both recorded double-doubles, with Schreiber scoring 15 points and ten rebounds, while Butler had a more unconventional ten rebound/ten assist game. Luxemburg-Casco product Cassie Schiltz chipped in nine points in the win, which was the Phoenix's fifth straight. They return to action Saturday afternoon to face Detroit-Mercy.

The Phoenix men kick off their weekend at the Kress Center at 6 p.m. Friday against the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons. Northern Kentucky defeated the Phoenix 58-57 last Wednesday at the Resch Center in their last action on the court. Two losses to the Norse bookend a five-game winning streak that has put the Phoenix a half-game behind Oakland for the conference lead.

Boys' basketball season enters final days

For most of the local boys' basketball teams, Thursday marks the final tune-up before the start of next week's WIAA Tournament.

Phoenix basketball teams begin Kress Center homestand

Fans of Green Bay basketball are being tasked with making the Kress Events Center a hostile environment this weekend as it hosts four days of Phoenix hoops.

The two teams will play on alternating days, with the women hosting the Horizon League's Detroit metro teams on Thursday (Oakland) and Saturday (Detroit-Mercy) and the men facing Purdue Fort Wayne on Friday and Youngstown State on Sunday. The Phoenix men and women are both in first place in the Horizon League by the slimmest of margins and cannot afford to lose games and risk losing rank in the tournament seeds.

The Phoenix women open the weekend of games at the Kress Center on Thursday against Oakland at 7 p.m.

Badgers hang on for win over Maryland

The Wisconsin Badgers got a much-needed 74-70 win over the Maryland Terrapins on Tuesday night to get back on the winning track.

Maryland took a 14-13 lead halfway through the first half but Wisconsin was able to open up a 37-29 lead at halftime.

Wisconsin would lead by as many as ten points in the second half, but the Terrapins would make it interesting until the very end.

Max Klesmit hit a huge three-pointer with just under one minute to play that extended the Badger lead to seven points and Wisconsin ended up  28/31 for 90 percent from the free-throw line to ultimately clinch the game from the charity stripe.

Tyler Wahl led the Badgers in scoring with 18 points and Max Klesmit added 16 more to secure a home win for Wisconsin.

Jonas takes over reins at Green Bay Preble

Just a few weeks after his position as Southern Door Athletic Director was posted online in search of candidates, Mark Jonas found a new job.

REPORT: Northwestern to play home game at Lambeau Field

A college football game may take place at Lambeau Field before Wisconsin's highly-anticipated matchup against Notre Dame in 2026, featuring an improbable team as the host.

Louie Vaccher from WildcatReport.com reports that Northwestern Athletic Director Derrick Gragg told alumni in New York City last week that the football team will play a home game at Lambeau Field during the 2025 season. Northwestern began demolishing Ryan Field earlier this month to pave the way for a new stadium to open in 2026. No team was announced as the "visiting team," but Vaccher suggests that it could be against Wisconsin, which Northwestern is scheduled to be the "home team" against in 2024.

There has been no formal announcement from Northwestern, Wisconsin, or the Green Bay Packers on the potential matchup in Green Bay. Mark Murphy left his role as the athletic director at Northwestern to become the Packers' president and CEO in 2007.

Purple-clad fans were split on the announcement since the athletic department is being viewed as giving away a home game in the name of the money. The announcement also came before the department said where they would play home games while waiting for the new Ryan Field to be built.

Lambeau Field hosted Wisconsin/LSU on September 3rd, 2016, and is scheduled to host Wisconsin/Notre Dame on September 5th, 2026. Despite the later date, it should be noted that the original date for the Wisconsin/Notre Dame game in 2020 was October 3rd, but it was canceled due to the pandemic.

Bucks bid for All-Star games

A day after Indianapolis took its turn hosting the annual NBA showcase, the Milwaukee Bucks are reportedly on the clock to host the All-Star game within the next six years.

According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the organization and the City of Milwaukee submitted a bid to host the NBA All-Star Games in 2027 and 2028 after 2025 was awarded to San Francisco and the Golden State Warriors and 2026 to Inglewood, California, and the Los Angeles Clippers.

It has been since 1977 that the NBA All-Stars descended on the Cream City for the exhibition. That game was held at the neighboring MECCA. Milwaukee has not held an All-Star Game since 2001 when the MLB hosted a tie game at Miller Park.

Duessler, Bley rely on past athletic experiences for Miss Door County platforms

Sevastopol athletes Kylee Duessler and Emily Bley did not have to look far to find the perfect platforms to travel the area promoting during their tenure as Miss Door County and Miss Door County Teen.

Duessler is at the tail end of her basketball season before she heads into the track season, where she qualified for last year's state meet in the 200m dash. The pair played with each other on the Pioneers volleyball team that made it to the regional semifinal last season after two consecutive trips to the sectional round.

Spring begins Saturday with Brewers preseason opener

It will feel a few degrees warmer on Saturday when the Milwaukee Brewers play their first spring training exhibition.

The team reported for its first season last week under Pat Murphy's tutelage. The Brewers made their splash in the free agency waters last month when they signed Rhys Hoskins to a two-year contract while seeing Corbin Burnes and Brandon Woodruff head to different pastures. This month, the Brewers have signed RHP Joshua Quezada, RHP Jakob Junis, LHP DL Hall, and INF Joey Ortiz.

The Brewers open their spring training schedule against the San Diego Padres on Saturday and the Colorado Rockies on Sunday.

Area sends 17 to WIAA State Wrestling Tournament

Door and Kewaunee counties will be well represented at next weekend's WIAA State Wrestling Tournament in Madison.

All five of the Eagles' competing girls made it to the championship match, but it was Nora LeFevre, Hailey Veeser, and Sydney Turner who punched their tickets with sectional championships. On the boys' side, Mason Motquin battled his way to a third-place finish to clinch his spot in the state tournament field.

For the Storm, Mitchell Boeder lost his chance at a sectional title before winning his second place match. Kemper Robinson and Mitchell VanGoethem made their way through from the consolation semis to earn their spots in the tournament field.

Nine members of the Luxemburg-Casco wrestling team will spend consecutive weekends in Madison after a successful outing at the WIAA Sectional Meet in Oconto Falls on Saturday. Jake Jandrin, Carson Neubert, Caleb Delebreau, Isaac Jerabek, and Max Ronsman will all have top seeds in next weekend's state tournament at the Kohl Center as sectional champions. Michael Bostwick, Blakelee Bastien, and Trace Schoenebeck nearly became sectional champions in their own right while Carson Blohowiak battled his way into the field with a third-place finish. On the girls' side, Kiley Georgel won her lone match of the day to become Luxemburg-Casco's first female state qualifier.

Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol's Tiani Lemieux clinched her second straight trip to the WIAA State Meet by hardly breaking a sweat. Lemieux pinned both of her opponents in less than two minutes total. Teammate Olivia Hofrichter split her two matches to come up just shy of a chance to go herself. On the boys' side, Spencer Madsen was the highest-placing wrestler as he missed out on a trip to Madison with a fourth-place finish.

DCU reflects on successful season

That’s a wrap on the 2023-2024 season. As the Door County United Boys close out the winter sports season, there's a whole lot to celebrate.

Wrapping up the season as an entire team at the D-2 State Championship is the biggest highlight to take from the past 14 weeks.  It isn't often that an entire team finds their way to the state competition, and this accomplishment is due by-in-large to the strong team culture the boys have developed this season.

As we end the season here’s a snapshot of the evening:
-The 200 Medley Relay (Ezra Linnan, Jack Monfils, Luke Filar, Logan Filar) swam a 1:46.26 taking 16th overall. Monfils swam his fastest 50 Breast split, breaking 28 seconds to go a 27.87.

-Monfils placed 9th overall in the 200 IM with a time of 2:00.86 and later followed this performance in the 100 Breast to place 11th with a time of 1:02.17.

As a team, DCU placed 24th out of 32 with a total of 17 points. Monfils brought in 15 total points, while the relay earned an additional 2.

It was a brilliant season and there are so many huge moments to celebrate. In spite of insurmountable challenges, this team proved their strength and fortitude time and time again.

Phoenix women finish off Penguins

The Green Bay Phoenix women's basketball team will enter its final homestand of the season on a happy note after beating Youngstown State on the road 71-59.

The Phoenix would stretch the lead out in the second quarter as they outscored the Penguins 16-9 in the frame. A 12-0 run by the Penguins brought the game to within one before the Phoenix answered with a stretch of their own that put the game out of reach.

Four Phoenix players reached double figures led by Maddy Schreiber and Natalie McNeal scoring 18 points apiece.

The Phoenix remains tied with Cleveland State for first place in the Horizon League ahead of visits from Oakland and Detroit Mercy over the next seven days.

Phoenix men drop close duel with Norse

It came down to the final seconds to decide the Green Bay Phoenix men's basketball team's fate as they lost to Northern Kentucky 58-57 at the Resch Center on Wednesday night.

The two teams went toe-to-toe all night long as the score was tied seven times to go along with 12 lead changes as they both shot under 40 percent from the field. The Phoenix were able to take a bite out of their three-point halftime deficit, but the Norse's Marques Warrick spoiled a 7-0 run by the Phoenix with a lay-up off the glass to give his team the one-point advantage with five seconds left. The Phoenix would run two more plays, ending with Noah Reynolds' last-second shot going off the front of the rim.

Reynolds finished with 18 points to lead the Phoenix as Preston Ruedinger added 10 points in the loss. The Norse had three players finish double figures.

With the men idle, the Phoenix women will have the focus with games at Robert Morris on Thursday (6 p.m.) and at Youngstown State on Saturday (12:30 p.m.). The Phoenix have won three of their last five games as they try to retake sole possession of first place in the Horizon League from Cleveland State.

Athlete to Athletic Director: Algoma's Ebert goes full circle

How does it feel to be an athletic director? Algoma Athletic Director Whitney Ebert answered that question by going back to when she was an athlete at the school.

She says on her time growing up that she grew up liking sports. "I love being active and thrive off of movement. In my Elementary and Middle School years, I enjoyed having the opportunity to play just about every sport throughout the year. I played Soccer, Basketball, and Softball and I ran Cross Country and Track & Field.”

She adds she was a dedicated athlete who had success because she was willing to put in the work and miles in the off-season and focused on the little things like strength training, recovery, and nutrition.

Being an athlete helped her in her job, as she says, because she was a multisport athlete for her high school and college careers. "You learn the importance of athletics for personal development and the needs of student-athletes and coaches. Every sport has highs and lows, and every athlete has gone through high and low points in sports. I am here to relate, listen, and help them through the process. The ability to relate as an Algoma student-athlete and Algoma alumni is something that gave me pride to pursue this role and give back to the community.”

Ebert was brought back to Algoma after college, after she graduated in May 2020, during Covid. "I believe it was a blessing in disguise as I got to be a part of a few of my family” 's business adventures. I was able to be a part of my family’s start-up of Salmon’s Meat Products and Homestead Kitchen Tap."

In 2022, Ebert decided that she wanted to do something more related to her Bachelor’s degree in Public Health & Community Health Education that she earned at UW-LaCrosse. "I was drawn to the Algoma Community Wellness Center as I like the atmosphere and was familiar with it as it opened my senior year of high school in 2015."  Since March 2022, Ebert has managed the Algoma Community Wellness Center, valuing how it is making the Algoma community a happier and healthier place.

In July 2022, Ebert started her role as the Middle School and High School Athletic & Activities Director, which has often been challenging and rewarding. "An Athletic Director is responsible for managing all aspects of their school’s athletic programs. This can involve scheduling, hiring, finding officials and workers, ordering equipment, student grade checks, athletic director meetings, coaches meetings, facility and game management, etc."

According to Ebert, every day is different as an athletic director, as there are multiple sports that have different levels. The role revolves around problem-solving and working ahead. "Deep down, the AD role is rewarding as you get to watch the student-athletes grow together as a team and improve their skills as individuals. Yes, there may be late nights and long days, but what keeps you going is that you are helping the students and giving them opportunities."

Ebert says the most fun part of being an athletic director is making connections with the students and helping them grow as not only an athlete but as a person. "I also enjoy how every day is different as an athletic director. Yes, sports seasons are seasonal, but you are always working on something for an upcoming season and problem-solving. In a nutshell, you get to be around and work with sports as your job."

Luxemburg-Casco wrestling clinches state berth with milestone win

A dual meet win over one of their chief rivals carried extra weight for the Luxemburg-Casco wrestling team, and not just because it clinched their 20th Team State appearance in program history.

The Spartans' 49-20 win over fellow NEC stalwart Freedom marked the 1000th dual meet in the school's history, many of which occurred at the UW Fieldhouse, where they will compete for a state title on March 2nd—the evening started with a 56-16 win over Wittenberg-Birnamwood.

Badger beat Buckeyes to end skid

After losing four consecutive Big Ten Conference games, the Wisconsin Badgers pulled out a 62-54 win over the Ohio State Buckeyes.

A close first half saw the Badgers take a commanding 34-21 lead into intermission after a 14-2 run to close out the half.

Wisconsin would build a 16-point lead at 44-28 with about 15 minutes to play, before the Buckeyes went on a 8-0 run to cut the lead to single digits.

Ohio State would cut it to 50-47 with two minutes to play but the Badgers close out their first win in nearly three weeks.

Steven Crowl had a double-double with 16 points and ten rebounds, while AJ Storr did the same with 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Badgers.

Wisconsin (9-5, 17-8 overall) will now play at Iowa to take on the Hawkeyes at Carver Arena on Saturday.

Bucks singed by Heat

The Milwaukee Bucks ran into a red-hot Miami Heat team Tuesday night, falling 123-97 before a disappointed home crowd at Fiserv Forum.

The Heat led from start to finish, hitting nearly half of their three-point shots by draining 26 of 47 from beyond the arc.

Taking a 40-28 lead after one quarter, the Heat outscored the Bucks by five points in the remaining three periods to cruise to an easy win.

The Bucks were led by Giannis Antetokounmpo with 23 points and 11 rebounds.  Damien Lillard, Malik Beasley, and Bobby Portis added 16 each, but it was not nearly enough.

Nikola Jovic paced the Heat with 24 points and was 5/8 from the three-point line.

Milwaukee (35-20) will now try to regroup before the All-Star break when they travel to Memphis to take on the Grizzlies (18-36) on Thursday.

Clipper Ski and Snowboard Team Wraps Up Conference Season

As your Sturgeon Bay Clippers Ski and Snowboard team wrapped up their conference season over the past week, they were led by three Seniors who proved just how far you can come through four years of commitment and determination.  On Saturday, Senior Alpine Racer Julia Gregory had her best results, finishing 16th overall at the Ski Brule meet, including 14th and 15th place finishes in the Super G and Giant Slalom events.  Julia was a positive influence on younger members of the team throughout the season. It even proved that the team motto* was more facetious than serious by skipping the final meet of the season to focus on her coursework.  Yes, Virginia, there is still such a thing as a student-athlete!

Senior Ben Stephens also had some of the best meets of his career over the past week, resulting in a 16th-place finish at Ski Brule and an 18th-place finish at Snowriver on Tuesday.  Ben had outstanding Giant Slalom, and Super G runs in both meets to cap off a great career, exemplified by consistent improvement.

L-C wrestling wins regionals as many more qualify for sectionals

Luxemburg-Casco continued their string of success at the WIAA Regional Wrestling Tournament, but wrestlers from the area's other three teams will also be sending competitors to next week's sectional meets.

The Spartans won the Two Rivers regional with 298 points, more than 130 points more than second place Winneconne. Twelve of its 14 wrestlers will move onto next week's sectional meet, including regional champions Carson Neubert (120), Caleb Delebreau (138), and Max Ronsman (150). The top four in each weight class move on to next week's sectional meet. As a result of their regional title, Luxemburg-Casco will wrestle in the team sectional on Tuesday in front of their home crowd. Wrestling begins that night at 6 p.m.

The Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol wrestling team will send four wrestlers to next week's sectional meet after a successful day at the Two Rivers Regional on Saturday. Spencer Madsen took home the top prize at 144 pounds, accumulating two decisions and a major along the way. Alex Andreae, Zak Wrobel, and Seth Laughlin also clinch sectional berths.

Three Southern Door wrestlers extended their season at least one more week after successful afternoons at the Cedar Grove-Belgium Regional. Mason Motquin (132) and Trevor Englebert (144) both took second place while Lance Veeser (150) secured his spot with a third-place finish.

Three Kewaunee Storm wrestlers found the top of the podium at the Cedar Grove-Belgium Regional on Saturday. Aiden Ducat (113), Kemper Robinson (190), and Mitchell Boeder (285) won their respective brackets while two others found their way into the consolation rounds. The Storm finished in fourth place with 150 points, just over 90 points behind first-place Random Lake.

The winner in each event is guaranteed a spot in the state meet, which will take place at Waukesha South on February 16th and 17th. David Douglas Jr. scored 16 points and Marcus Hall added 13 points in the win that had them down by four points at the break.

At home, the Phoenix women outscored IUPUI by 10 in the first quarter and never wavered in a 71-52 win. The Gamblers entered the fatal period with a 2-1 lead thanks to goals from William Hughes and Julian Lutz, but the Black Hawks would go on to score four of the next five goals over the following 26 minutes on the game clock. Jayson Shaugabay provided a reprieve from the onslaught, while Charlie Russell added one more goal late in the third period. Adam Gajan stopped 36 of the 41 shots he faced in the game. The Gamblers are back at it Saturday when they travel to Madison for a 7:05 p.m. tilt against the Capitols.

Two local players hit major milestones as a part of an eventful night in boys' basketball on Thursday night.

As heard on U-102.1, tt may have been an Algoma home game, but the Southern Door fan base traveled well to support Junior Drew Daoust and his quest for 2000 points.  Fans were treated to that 2000-point milestone and a 66-45 Southern Door victory.

Borseth earns 500th win as Phoenix women cruise

Both Green Bay Phoenix basketball teams won on Thursday, but the women's victory carried the most weight.

The Phoenix women's 67-51 win over Northern Kentucky not only got them back into the win column for the first time since their humbling defeat to Cleveland State last weekend but also marked the 500th in the Green Bay coaching career of Kevin Borseth. He could reach 800 total wins sometime next year at his current pace. It looked bad early as the Norse jumped out to a 15-4 lead in front of the Green Bay fans, but the Phoenix closed the quarter on a 10-0 run to close the gap and closed the door in the third quarter when they outscored their opponent 24-8. Natalie McNeal celebrated her 100th game with a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 16 rebounds, while  Maddy Schreiber led all scorers with 16 points.

The Phoenix men had more drama in their contest but prevailed against Robert Morris in overtime 81-76. The Phoenix could not hold onto their halftime lead, but outscored the Colonials 16-11 in the extra period to reclaim sole possession of first place in the Horizon League. Player of the Year candidate Noah Reynolds registered his sixth 30-point performance of the season, notching 32 points in the win.

Both teams play matinees on Saturday, with the men playing at Youngstown State at 12:30 p.m. and the women hosting IUPUI at 1 p.m.

Former Packers make Pro Football Hall of Fame

They played a combined 64 games in the green and gold, but the Green Bay Packers can still lay claim to two of the seven newest inductees of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Former Packers defensive linemen Steve McMichael and Julius Peppers will be enshrined in Canton later this year as a part of the seven-member class that also includes Devin Hester, Andre Johnson, Dwight Freeney, Randy Gradishar, and Patrick Willis. Both players are also much more associated with other teams, with McMichael, one of the menaces on the heralded 1985 Chicago Bears Super Bowl team, and Peppers, a member of the Carolina Panthers.

In the twilight of their careers, Peppers registered more than 100 tackles in three seasons in Green Bay, collecting two interceptions and 25 sacks, while McMichael had 2,5 sacks among his 28 tackles.

The pair will be inducted in Canton in August.

Three boys' basketball games featured on NEW Radio Sports Network

Five local teams will be featured across three boys' games on Thursday night on the NEW Radio Sports Network.

Drew Daoust is expected to build on his Door County and Packerland Conference scoring records while crossing the 2,000-point barrier on Thursday when Southern Door travels to Algoma Thursday night. Jacob Nate and Reece Robillard will have the call on U-102.1 beginning at 7:15 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the opening tip at 7:30 p.m.

Luxemburg-Casco will be in its friendly confines Thursday night when they welcome Freedom for a conference matchup. Henry Annen and Matthew Malvitz will have the call on 104.1 WRLU beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the opening tip at 7 p.m.

Gibraltar and Sevastopol look to snap long losing streaks on Thursday night when they play each other in Fish Creek. Tim Kowols will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 7:15 p.m. followed by the opening tip at 7:30 p.m.

All three games will also be streamed worldwide at NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com.

Kewaunee is also in action on Thursday as they host Peshtigo at 7:30 p.m. They will also play Wrightstown on Friday at 7 p.m. Sturgeon Bay is off for the rest of the week.

Phoenix men, women divide and conquer Thursday

The drive for the regular-season Horizon League crown continues on Thursday for the Green Bay basketball teams, with the women sticking around town while the men travel outside of it.

At the Kress Events Center in Green Bay, the Phoenix women will try to rebound from a humbling loss to Cleveland State last weekend when they host Northern Kentucky for a 7 p.m. tip.  The Vikings shot 65 percent from three-point land, including 6-6 in the first quarter and 4-5 in the fourth quarter, which saw them outscore the Phoenix 28-12. The loss spoiled a career day for Natalie McNeal, who dropped 30 points to lead the Phoenix, while Maddy Schreiber added 14 points. A win on Thursday would be #500 for Kevin Borseth as the head coach of Green Bay. The Norse are 4-8 in the Horizon League and 6-15 overall. The Phoenix are two games in the win column behind Cleveland State for the conference lead.

On Thursday, the Phoenix men are in the Pittsburgh area for a 6 p.m. contest against Robert Morris. After splitting their two games during their last road trip, the Phoenix won all three during their homestand, including a 79-56 win over IUPUI last Thursday. The Colonials have won four of their last six Horizon League games but still find themselves near the bottom of the conference in ninth place.

Packers outline CEO search process

The Green Bay Packers have laid out the plans to replace current team president and CEO Mark Murphy.

Murphy will turn 70 next summer, which is the mandatory threshold for retirement in the role as written in the organization's by-laws. According to the Packers, Susan Finco, executive committee vice president, and lead director, is the chairperson for the Packers Board of Directors search committee. Dan Ariens, executive committee secretary and chair of the personnel and compensation committee, is vice chair for the search committee. "Mark's contributions to the organization have been tremendous," Finco said. "From updating the corporate leadership structure to growing and diversifying revenue to increasing the meaningful impact of the Packers in the community, Mark continues to position the Packers for success. We look forward to his insightful leadership in the next year and a half."

Murphy has been with the Packers since 2007, and he has overseen the team's continued success on the field, the development of Titletown across the street, and the current preparations for the 2025 NFL Draft. The goal is to have a new president and CEO in place by July 2025.

Men's soccer returns to Green Bay

After a two-year hiatus, semi-pro men's soccer is returning to the Green Bay area under a familiar banner.

The Green Bay Glory, which has operated a women's side since 2019, announced on Wednesday that it will field a men's team in 2024. Both teams will play in the Midwest Premier League, which features teams from Milwaukee, Chicago, Dekalb, Ill., Joliet, Ill., and Indianapolis.

In a statement from the team, the program will be spearheaded by Elliot Bordini, Glory women's team owner Kerry Geocaris’ son. Bordini, a collegiate soccer player, will look to help replicate what the Women’s program, going into its 2nd season in the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL), has done both on and off the field. “I’ve admired what Glory has accomplished and what they are doing for the female athletes and community is incredible. I want to be a part of providing opportunities for players like myself who want to stay in love with the game and aspire to make something of themselves on and off the field,” says Bordini.

The team will play at the Banta Bowl on Lawrence University's campus in Appleton for their inaugural season. This will fill a void left by the Green Bay Voyageurs, which disappeared in the haze of the pandemic in 2022.

Gamblers force OT, lose to Steel

The Green Bay Gamblers very nearly lost in regulation before the Chicago Steel eventually won the game 2-1 in overtime.

It appeared a William Hughes tally in the first period was going to be the only goal the Gamblers would score before Jayson Shaugabay lit the lamp with 20 seconds left. The joy would be short-lived as the Steel's Michael Hage scored two minutes into the period to snatch the game back from the Gamblers. Adam Gajan stopped 22 of the 25 shots he faced in the game.

Packers could be in store for more international games

A report from the Green Bay Press-Gazette suggests you may want to keep your passport next to your cheesehead for the foreseeable future.

According to the Press-Gazette's Richard Ryman, NFL owners approved an expanded schedule of international games last season that ultimately have teams hosting a game overseas at least every four years. In addition to previous international hosts in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Mexico, Brazil has been added as a host country. There is even a chance that the Packers could head out of the country this year as a visiting team after the Minnesota Vikings, the Chicago Bears, the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Carolina Panthers were selected as international home teams.

The Packers had skirted international games in the past because of the impact home games have on the local economy and other teams' reluctance to give up a home date to play them. That changed in 2022 when the Packers were named the home team in a game against the New York Giants at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

Ballpark Digest Honors Neuroscience Group Field as Ballpark of the Year for 2023

Ballpark Digest has named Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium as their Ballpark of the Year for 2023.  The announcement was made by Rob Zerjav, the President, CEO, and Managing Partner of Third Base Ventures, at the team’s 2024 Hot Stove Banquet last week.

“We are deeply honored to be named Ballpark Digest’s Ballpark of the Year and we thank Kevin and his team for this tremendous recognition”, said Timber Rattlers CEO and Managing Partner, Rob Zerjav. “We take a lot of pride in our almost 30-year-old stadium and have been very strategic with our renovation plans over the years to ensure we are providing the newest amenities while keeping some of our old-school charm.  Our recent renovation couldn’t have been received any better by our players and our fans.  To have that hard work noticed by Ballpark Digest is the cherry on top.”

Ballpark Digest is part of August Publications, a Minneapolis-based publisher of websites and books.  The Ballpark Digest website has been a leader in news about baseball stadiums and people of baseball since it first went live in 2002.

“It’s been a delight watching the Timber Rattlers and Rob Zerjav’s ownership group go the extra mile in creating a great ballpark experience both for fans and players,” said Ballpark Digest publisher Kevin Reichard. “It’s no secret the last four years have been a challenging environment for MiLB teams, both because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the changing expectations from MiLB on the ballpark front. The renovations to Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium excel on both levels.”

The home of the Timber Rattlers underwent a major renovation at the end of the 2022 season, the latest in a series of renovations that have taken place since Zerjav took over as the General Manager of the club after the 2002 season.  Zerjav’s vision of a 360-degree concourse was finally realized with new seating atop the left field wall and a slide to honor the Milwaukee Brewers slide at American Family Field.  Additional renovations for fans included:  a premium group seating area behind home plate, wider concourses, and improved handicapped seating.

Additionally, a new home clubhouse of over 22,000 square feet for the home team was built from scratch with the intention of being one of the best in Minor League Baseball with batting cages, a workout facility, agility field, commissary, meeting rooms, video rooms, offices, and a spacious locker room.

“We couldn’t have done any of this without the help of our construction partners,” said Zerjav. “The project was completed in record time, starting at season’s end in mid-September and finishing as the team arrived on April 1. Pendulum Studio’s Jonathan Cole provided an incredible design and Boldt Construction’s project management and sense of community pride to get this project done on time will never be forgotten. There were numerous additional partners on the construction side and to name a few that played key roles include Northland Electric, Tweet/Garot, Calnin & Goss, IEI Construction, Macco’s, Tri-City Glass & Door, Commercial Interiors, Cardinal Construction, Verhalen, and Sportsfield Specialties.  Thank you to everyone involved in this project and I hope you take as much pride in your work as we do.”

Timber Rattlers fans flocked to the stadium to see the renovations and the latest Milwaukee Brewers prospects.  Attendance soared to over 227,000, which was up 10% from the 2022 season.

Past winners of the award have included Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins; Truist Park, home of the Atlanta Braves; Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, spring training home of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies; and Las Vegas Ballpark, home of the Triple-A Las Vegas Aviators.  Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium is the first Midwest League stadium to win Ballpark of the Year from Ballpark Digest.

Wisconsin’s 2024 season opener is at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium against the Peoria Chiefs on Friday, April 5. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40pm CDT.

Girls' wrestling round-up: SBS' Lemieux wins Preble crown

There was plenty of hardware won by the area's girls wrestlers on Saturday.

Tiani Lemieux made quick work of her competition as she pinned her way to a championship at Green Bay Preble on Saturday. All three of her pins were settled in the first period, two of which never reached 30 seconds. Her final win was against Southern Door's Hailey Veeser, a matchup that has traded victories during the season.

Two Southern Door wrestlers were right on the doorstep of individual titles at Green Bay Preble's girls' tournament on Saturday. Sydney Turner and Hailey Veeser had a combined six pins to their name before falling in their final match of the day. Delaney Wilke's day ended earlier than she would have liked with a medical forfeit, but she still took fourth in the tournament.

Luxemburg-Casco's Evelyn Lange and Kiley Georgel each brought home silver from their NEC/Bay Conference Girls' Wrestling Tournament. Georgel's road to second place was shorter than Lange's as she split her two matches while Lange pinned her way through three matches before falling in the championship match.

Rikkola hits 1000-point milestone as Pioneers cruise past Vikes

Naomi Rikkola got exactly what she needed to not only lead the Sevastopol Pioneers to an 80-31 victory over Gibraltar, but to write her name in the record books.

Rikkola scored 36 points in the Pioneers win, the exact number she needed to become the sixth student-athlete at the school to reach 1,000 points and the first to do it as a junior.

In other action on Saturday, Kewaunee beat Peshtigo 64-28 and Southern Door fell to Crivitz 47-44.

WIAA approves new volleyball tournament format, student-athlete advisory team

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control authorized the Tournament Series format to accommodate a fifth division of girls volleyball in 2024 and approved plans for a student leadership program at its January meeting on Wednesday.

The Board approved four recommendations originated and advanced by the Volleyball Coaches Advisory Committees, including two that revamps the Tournament Series that expands to five girls’ divisions next fall. Following a review by the executive staff, Sports Advisory Committee and the Advisory Council, the Board supported a plan that places the largest 116 enrollments of schools sponsoring girls volleyball in Division 1, and Divisions 2, 3, 4 and 5 will consist of the remaining schools divided equally.

To accommodate the addition of four teams and three games, the State Tournament will expand to Wednesday afternoon and evening with the boys volleyball quarterfinals. The boys’ semifinals games will be played Thursday afternoon with the championship game scheduled for Friday evening. The girls’ Division 5 and the Division 4 semifinals are scheduled for Thursday at 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., respectively, with the girls’ Division 1 quarterfinals to be played Thursday at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The girls’ Division 1 semifinals are slated for Friday at 1 p.m. The girls’ Division 3 and Division 2 semifinals will be played Friday at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., respectively. The girls’ championships Saturday will begin with Division 5 at 9 a.m. followed by Division 4 at 11:30 a.m., Division 3 at 2 p.m., Division 2 at 5 p.m. and Division 1 at 7:30 p.m.

One of the other two volleyball changes approved adds a fifth day (Sunday-Thursday) to the window that seed meetings may be scheduled, and the other requires teams to wear contrasting colors at the State Tournament for the ease of identifying teams unless the schools do not have uniforms of contrasting colors.

The lone rule change in boys soccer permits Tournament Series games on a shared football and soccer natural-turf field if agreed upon by participating schools prior to the day of the game.

One football recommendation approved by the Board changes the verbiage for the football playoff awards. The round formerly identified on the  Level 3 plaques will be changed to “Sectional Champions,” which will be presented to the winner of the third-round game. The former Level 4 game will now be identified as the “State Semifinals” with only medals still being presented following the semifinal games.

Plans for a WIAA Student Leadership Group were approved. The group, comprises a diverse group of student-athletes statewide, will serve as ambassadors for their peers and the WIAA while learning more about athletic leadership and the sports industry, as well as providing the membership with a student-athlete voice for advancing the purpose of education-based athletics. The launch of the initiative will begin with nominations of student-athletes to serve on the leadership team beginning in March with the first meeting of the group in May.

The leadership committee will consist of 27 members with representation from each of the seven Board of Control districts based on a percentage of member schools within each district. School principals or athletic directors may nominate one current sophomore and/or junior to be a prospective member of the committee next year. After the first year of the initiative, all student-athletes will serve two-year terms.

Officers of the group will consist of a president; vice president; a representative from each of the seven districts; two State Tournament managers; and three positions responsible for technology, history and social media. Schools will receive additional information about the WIAA Leadership Group with details on how to access, complete and submit the nomination form.

Other action by the Board included approvals of the fall sports coaches advisory committee meeting minutes and the procedural monthly general fund financial statements, fall sports financial statements, the deferred liability fund statement and general fund payments.

Additional topics of discussion included staff reports on prospective Constitutional amendments, the status of the 2023-24 conference realignment process, upcoming Advisory Council and Board of Control elections, continued efforts to recruit and retain licensed officials, inquiries on competitive balance performance factor classification, plans for the 2024 Annual Meeting in April as well as the status of the 2024 Scholar Athlete program in May.

The Board received liaison reports from Dan Rossmiller of the Wisconsin Association of School Boards, Paul Manriquez of the Department of Public Instruction, and Eric Plitzuweit of the Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association.

The WIAA, as defined by its Constitution, is a voluntary, unincorporated, and nonprofit organization. The membership oversees interscholastic athletic programs for 515 senior high schools and 43 junior high/middle level schools in its membership.

Two local teams were able to defend their home court on Friday, one of which was featured on the NEW Radio Sports Network.

On U-102.1, the Sturgeon Bay Clippers made quick work of the visiting Sevastopol Pioneers on Friday night, securing the home victory 78-43.

It was a tale of two halves for the Algoma Wolves and the Peshtigo Bulldogs in Algoma on Friday, with the hometown team falling short in the 45-42 loss.

Down by one at halftime proved not to deter the Kewaunee Storm as they came back to beat the NEW Lutheran Blazers 66-61.

On 105.1 The GOAT, the Gibraltar boys' basketball team could not make its six-point halftime last the distance as they fell to Oconto 67-60 in Fish Creek Friday night.

Packerland Conference girls' basketball in store for Saturday

A significant milestone could be on the line Saturday as the Packerland Conference's girls' basketball teams take to the court.

Naomi Rikkola enters Sevastopol's game against Gibraltar 36 points away from her 1000th point when they host the Vikings at 2 p.m. If she doesn't hit the mark on Saturday, we will have her next attempt at breaking the barrier on Tuesday on 104.1 WRLU when the Pioneers face Kewaunee.

Other Saturday games include Kewaunee traveling to Peshtigo (12:30 p.m.) and Southern Door traveling to the Oshkosh Arena to face Crivitz (1:30 p.m.).

Luxemburg-Casco faced Freedom Friday night with results still pending.

DCU swimmers visit Kiel for conference meet

The Door County United Swim Team will face its conference rivals when it travels to Kiel on Saturday morning.

Berlin, Chilton, Plymouth, and Two Rivers will also fight Kiel and DCU swimmers for spots on the podium when the meet begins at 9:00 a.m.

In their last meet, DCU brought in 66 points last Saturday to place 14th of 20 at Small School State in Shorewood. The boys proved they were ready for the quickly approaching end of the season and for the upcoming taper as the meet showed off the strengths and assets the team has as a whole. Jack Monfils posted the team's best finish in the 100 Breast with a personal best of 1:03.08 to place 2nd and bring in 17 points.

Wrestlers get final tune-up ahead of WIAA tournaments

With the WIAA postseason beginning next weekend, Saturday marks the last day area wrestlers can build their resume and some confidence heading into those tournaments.

Southern Door, Kewaunee, and Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol will face the likes of Menasha, Suring, Pulaski, Ashwaubenon, Campbellsport, Coleman, De Pere, Green Bay West, Marathon, Mauston, Nicolet, Peshtigo, Wautoma, Whitefish Bay, Whitnall, Wittenberg-Birnamwood, Manitowoc Lincoln, Bay Port,  and Shawano Community at Green Bay Preble for a tournament beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Luxemburg-Casco's female wrestlers will travel to Waupaca for the NEC/Bay Conference Tournament, featuring Clintonville, Denmark, Fox Valley Lutheran, Freedom, Green Bay United, Little Chute, Marinette, Menasha, New London, Oconto Falls, Seymour, Shawano Community, Waupaca, West De Pere, Wrightstown, and Xavier. The first matches begin at 9:30 a.m.

Clippers ski team making the most of the snow

The Clipper Ski and Snowboard team is making the most of the little snow that Mother Nature is throwing our way.  The third meet of the shortened ski and snowboard season is in the books, with accolades piling up on both sides of the hill.  At the Mt. Ashwabay meet on Tuesday, Senior Tristan Brilla executed another fantastic performance to finish in second place, but less than 3 seconds (spread out over four runs) behind first-place finisher Owen Repenshek from Rhinelander.  For those scoring at home, Brilla edged out his Hodag rival in the first meet of the season, Repenshek was a no-show at the second meet, and then Brilla came up just short of the title at Mt. Ashwabay.  With two meets remaining and a format change coming up on Saturday at Ski Brule, Tristan looks to take control of the individual standings and slide on into a state meet berth over the course of the next week.  The fourth meet of the snowboard season at Ski Brule will feature a Boardercross format rather than the standard Slalom and Giant Slalom events used on other hills.  Good luck Tristan!

In the girls snowboarding events, newcomer Makensie Mclain (and by newcomer, we mean that she never snowboarded before this year), has now registered 18 straight runs without missing a gate.  She will be experiencing the Boardercross format for the first time in her career on Saturday.  Keep the streak alive Makensie!

In the skiing events, Senior Julia Gregory led the way for the Clippers, coming in at 21st overall in the meet.  Gregory posted a season-best performance in the Super G, which is high school skiing's equivalent of the Olympic downhill event.  Way to fly, Julia!  Sophomore June Vanlieshout had her best time of the season in the Giant Slalom, and fellow Sophomore Jordis Brilla registered her best meet of the season by finishing 22nd overall, just behind her Senior mentor.

Senior Ben Stephens represented the Clippers on the boy's side of the ledger with a solid performance and a top-25 finish overall.  As any Senior leader should, he also polished off a Bubbl'r, a flavored water, a Dr. Pepper, Pop Tarts, a Jimmy John's sandwich, and an AmericInn hotel breakfast, setting the pace for the rest of the team on how to make the most out of a memorable, nutritious ski team overnight trip.

Good luck to the Clippers as they take on the rest of the Northern High School Ski and Snowboard conference this weekend at Ski Brule and Tuesday at Snowriver Mountain Resort.

Pictured are L-R Top Row Coach Brian Stephens, Ben Stephens (12), Tristan Brilla (12), Makensie Mclain (11), Coach Josh VanLieshout, and L-R Bottom Row June VanLieshout (10), Julia Gregory (12), Jordis Brilla (10).

Girls' basketball round-up: Southern Door tops Algoma

The Eagles withstood a furious rally by Algoma to win their matchup 39-33 in Brussels.

The Vikings never surrendered their 20-point halftime lead in a 65-41 win over Goodman/Pembine.

Sturgeon Bay was singed by NEW Lutheran 35-33.

Only one game is on the schedule for Friday as Luxemburg-Casco hosts Freedom at 7 p.m.

Phoenix men race past Jaguars

The Green Bay Phoenix overcame a slow start to win their 15th game of the season, beating IUPUI 79-56.

The Phoenix defense couldn't solve the Jaguars offense early on, letting the visitors jump to a 34-30 advantage. The Phoenix ended the half on a 6-0 run and started the second frame on a 17-6 to begin the eventual rout. Reigning Freshman of the Week David Douglas Jr. led the Phoenix with 20 points, 17 of which came in the second half. Noah Reynolds scored 17 of his 19 points in the first half, while Rich Bhyre poured in 13 points, and Clarence Cummings III added 10 points in the win.

Thursday's win marked the first time the Phoenix hit double-digit victories for the first time since before the pandemic and the crowd nearly hit 5,500, making it the biggest crowd in almost 10 years. A big reason why was the 3,500 students that came for Education Day. Some of those students came from Algoma, which had themselves a memorable day ahead of a needed break for the Phoenix.

Packers hire Hafley as new defensive coordinator

The Green Bay Packers dipped into the college ranks to fill its open defensive coordinator position, hiring Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley.

According to Packers.com, Hafley led the Eagles to bowl eligibility in three of his four years. In 2021, the defense ranked No. 3 nationally in passing yards allowed (173.5 per game) and also were top-30 nationally in total defense, red-zone defense, first downs allowed, third-down percentage, team passing efficiency and defensive touchdowns. The Eagles also led the ACC in fewest penalties and fewest penalty yards.

Hafley also has previous coaching experience in the NFL, serving as a defensive backs coach for the San Francisco 49ers (2016-18) and Cleveland Browns (2014-15).

Phoenix men hosts IUPUI for lunch

The Green Bay Phoenix men's basketball team will have thousands of grade-school students cheering them on Thursday morning when they welcome IUPUI to the Resch Center.

The Phoenix are hosting their annual Education Day Festivities after sweeping two Detroit-area teams over the weekend. An 11-0 run late in the second half sent the biggest Resch Center crowd in four years into a frenzy as the Phoenix beat the Oakland Golden Grizzlies 69-59 before another late run dispatched Detroit Mercy 78-64 behind another strong performance from Noah Reynolds. The weekend helped a Green Bay men's basketball freshman get named the Under Armour Horizon League Freshman of the Week for the third straight week,. David Douglas Jr. earned the honor for the third time this season after he scored 22 points on Saturday against the Titans.

The Jaguars enter the game with a 6-17 record and losers of their last three games. In a similarly themed game, the Phoenix beat the Jaguars in Indianapolis earlier this season 68-58 behind a 26-point performance from Douglas.

Tip-off is set for 11 a.m.
