The Sturgeon Bay American Legion baseball team won its way into the state tournament Monday by topping Oconto Falls in a regional final 3-2. The game was postponed after rain eliminated any chance of playing Sunday.
Riley Cordier pitched six innings and Riley Schartner tossed the final inning to earn the win.
Lucas “Lucky” Stepehnson was exactly what his nickname suggests in the final inning. He was caught in a rundown at third base when Oconto Falls’ third baseman threw the ball over the catcher's head to allow the winning run to score.
The Bays finished runner up in the regional, but they advance to state as Kewaunee County was the regional winner and is automatically seeded into the tournament.
The Bays are now (14-12) overall on the season and will open state tourney play on Friday at Luxemburg at 8 PM. Game one will be a rivalry as they drew Kewaunee County. It will mark the sixth time these two teams will play this season.
