Packers running back Cedric Benson has been placed on injured reserve but may not be lost for the season. A new twist to the injured reserve list allows the veteran running back with over 90 games of NFL experience to return to the team after healing from a foot injury.
Benson has had 71 of the team's 111 carries on the season and is the only running back with long term NFL experience. Injured reserve this season means Benson must sit out eight games before he can play again, though he will be eligible to practice after six weeks.
The former Chicago Bear and Cincinnati Bengal has gained 248 yards rushing this season. Second year back Alex Green will likely get the start Sunday night against the Texans. He has tallied 11 for 57 yards rushing, 41 of which came on one play.
The Packers will also lean on James Starks and Brandon Saine to help carry the load in Benson's absence.
