By Nick Freimuth Newman Catholic had never lost a game in the two-year history of their eight-man football program. Until Friday night, that is. The Sevastopol Pioneers delivered the Cardinals their first ever loss in a 50-28 victory in a state semi-final on 104.1 FM WRLU. Max Krohn in his first game at running back scored two touchdowns including an 88-yarder and another from six yards out. Leading 36-7 at half time, Newman Catholic clawed back in the third quarter to make it a 36-20 game heading into the fourth quarter.
Sevastopol stemmed the tide however and held off a Cardinals comeback bid. A 50-28 win was iced by 78-yard touchdown run by Spencer Evenson and then a 14-yard score both in the fourth quarter. Evenson also opened the scoring with a 30-yard touchdown run in the opening minutes.
The Pioneers win sets up a championship game with Luck next Saturday on 104.1 FM WRLU at 1:00 PM from Stanley Boyd High School in the Eau Claire area.
