By Nick Freimuth Tuesday night was the opening night of the WIAA Regional Volleyball Tournament throughout the state of Wisconsin. There were some exciting victories and heartbreaking defeats by teams in Door and Kewaunee Counties. The Sturgeon Bay Clippers Volleyball team defeated the Peshtigo Bulldogs in 3 out of 5 sets tonight at Sturgeon Bay High School. Athletic Director Todd Meikle said, “The win was highlighted by a key spike run lead by Hailey DeGrave and KoKo Hartzell in the fifth game that the Clippers won 15-9. The essence of the victory was the overall team play by the Clippers as they lost in the first set 25-20 to the Bulldogs. But the girls fought back to win the next 3 out of 4 sets to secure a Thursday night showdown at Notre Dame Academy, Thursday night, at 7:00 PM. Thank you to Clipper Nation for your excellent support at tonight’s game!”
In Division 3, #4 Southern Door swept #14 Sevastopol at Eagle Gymnasium. The Eagles swept the Pioneers (25-20, 25-17, 25-22). Algoma topped Roncalli in four games (25-14, 25-21, 14-25, 25-18). The Wolves were the home team after securing the eighth seed in the # vs. #9 matchup. Kewaunee saw their season come to an end against Saint Mary’s Springs (24-26, 25-17, 25-11, 25-14).
Gibraltar is the lone Door/Kewaunee team in Division 4. The Vikings had the most dominant performance of any area team sweeping Salam (25-9, 25-6, 25-7). The Milwaukee-area school never got into a rhythm against a solid Vikings offense.
