Door County will have two teams involved in the first-ever WIAA 8-man football playoffs when they kick off on Friday.
Both Sevastopol and Gibraltar earned spots in the East divisional bracket, giving the possibility of a cross-county clash for an opportunity to go to the state title game. The Pioneers beat the Vikings in convincing fashion last week 64-16 in Institute. Before that happens, however, the Pioneers and the Vikings will have to knock off two of the most talented teams in the state in Newman Catholic (#1 overall seed, #1 in the East) and Oakfield (#3 in the East). The pair has a combined record of 37-1 the last two seasons, including victories in the now-defunct WIAA 8-man Jamboree. The Fighting Cardinals beat both Door County teams this regular season, defeating the Pioneers in week three 26-6 and the Vikings in week six 68-34. The Pioneers are the only team to keep the Fighting Cardinals under 30 points in a game since the team from Wausau joined eight-man football last year, doing so twice in a pair of losses. The Oaks played Gibraltar in a fill-in game during week seven and won 70-34.
In the divisional semi-final round, Sevastopol will host Oakfield in Institute while Gibraltar will reprise their Wausau road trip to face Newman Catholic. Both games are scheduled to take place on Friday night.
