By Tim Kowols & Brett Kinnard
County rivalry bragging rights. Potential playoff positioning. It is hard to imagine much more being on the line Friday night when the Gibraltar Vikings line-up against the Sevastopol Pioneers on 104.1 FM and 105.1 FM in Institute.
The Vikings took one more step towards the playoffs last week when it outlasted the Wausaukee Rangers 44-28 on homecoming. Trevor Reinhardt was able to get into a groove offensively as he threw for five touchdown passes. Four different Vikings reached the end zone as a result of Reinhardt’s passing, including Alex Laughlin claiming four scores of his own.
The Pioneers handled the Gillett Tigers in their final tuneup before the rivalry game 38-6. Nathan Stenzel led the way for the Pioneers with 260 yards and two total touchdowns. Jaden Sawyer put the game on ice when he took a 20-yard fumble return for a touchdown.
The WIAA Web site has been hush about potential matchups in its first ever dip into a playoff format. It is likely the winner of the matchup not only wins the MONLPC-8 man crown but also will host a game next week in the playoffs’ opening round. Tim Kowols will have the away team call for the Vikings on 105.1 The Viking while Brett Kinnard and Tyler Dantoin will have the Pioneers call on 104.1 WRLU. Pregame for both broadcasts start at 6:30 p.m. followed by kickoff at 7 p.m.
