By Nck Freimuth Sturgeon Bay Soccer shutout Gibraltar 3-0 Thursday night at Dick Clark Field. Eli Dietzel and Trey Maas each scored a goal in the win. The first goal was an ‘own goal,’ meaning Gibraltar knocked the ball into their own net. DJ Riechel and Dylan Burk each were credited with an assist. Coach Todd Maas said, “Gibraltar stayed very compact in the back third which made it difficult for us to have success attacking. They did what they needed to do to keep the score close and hopefully get a longball transitional goal. They definitely outhustled us last night. They came ready to play. Our crazy amount of turnovers also didn’t help us in any way. But our boys did start to get things turned around in the second half. Finding a better rhythm and controlled the game a bit more, putting more pressure on their defense to make plays. We outshot them 21-1, which was a good thing to see. But we need to convert more of those opportunities to goals and put teams away earlier.” Sturgeon Bay next plays tonight at home vs. Pulaski.
Haakon Utesch had 26 keeper saves for Algoma in a 6-3 loss to N.E.W. Lutheran Thursday. Riley Reinhart scored all three goals for the Wolves accomplishing a ‘hat trick.’ Noah Paszczak and Padrein Duerst each had an assist in the loss.
