The Southern Door Eagles traveled to Winneconne to take on the Wolves in a non-conference season opener, the first of three non-MONLPC games on the nine-game slate this year. It was a very hot and humid first episode of Friday night lights, making for some slippery conditions on the field.
The game started off with an opening drive down the field for the Wolves with a three-yard touchdown pass from Harry Roubidoux to Eli Berndt to put them up 7-0. Following an interception on Southern Door’s next possession, Winneconne punched in a three-yard touchdown run by Jacob Omitt. The Wolves would tack on two more scores to give them a 28-0 lead at the half.
The Eagles regrouped at half and responded well in the third and fourth quarters. They had two stops against the Winneconne offense on fourth down inside their red zone, but they still had a hard time keeping the momentum going on offense. In the fourth quarter, they finally broke through with a 70-yard bomb from Kyle Daoust to Derik LeCaptain to get the Eagles on the board. It was a different tale in the second half as Winneconne only outscored Southern Door by a field goal, and the Eagles defense tightened up. Winneconne would go on to win the game with a final score of 37-6.
Derik LeCaptain led the way tonight for Southern Door with 124 receiving yards in the game and 187 all-purpose yards. He also recorded a team-high six tackles on defense. Max Pierre wasn’t far behind with five tackles of his own. Kyle Daoust went 16/35 through the air with 175 passing yards in the game. The Eagles will now regroup this week before taking on Wausau East in their home opener next Friday night. Coverage will begin at six for that game.
