The Gibraltar Vikings football team will have an extra week to prepare for their season after their home opener Friday against Oneida Nation was canceled. Gibraltar officials were notified Thursday morning that Oneida Nation was going to be unable to field a team. Efforts were made to try to find a replacement opponent, but teams were just hard to come by on such short notice.
The Vikings could have been down two games this season after Bowler-Gresham canceled their entire season earlier this week due to low numbers. Sevastopol was supposed to open their season against Bowler-Gresham on Friday, but will play Wisconsin Heights instead on Saturday afternoon. Gibraltar will now play at Oakfield on September 28 in its place.
The season opener for Gibraltar will now be next Saturday at Green Bay NEW Lutheran. Tim Kowols will have the pre-game show beginning at 12:30 p.m. and Eric Fischer will have the kickoff at 1 p.m.
