Margaret Agnes Marie Zak Orsted died on August 14, 2018.
Born on April 23, 1920 at home in “The Polish Settlement”,
Town of Gibraltar. Margaret was the youngest of 16 children
born to Martin and Agnes Kuberski Zak.
Margaret attended Pershing School, Town of Gibraltar. She
worked as a waitress and maid at the local resorts, and at the
age of 18 she moved to Milwaukee to work as a housemaid.
She married the boy next door and the love her life, Gardner
Arthur Orsted, Jr. on June 7, 1941 at St. Mary’s of the Lake
Catholic Church in Baileys Harbor. They celebrated 75 years of marriage with their
family in 2016. Gardie preceded her in death in September of 2016.
They made their home in Racine from 1941 until Gardner was called to serve in the US
Army in 1943. Margaret and their daughter Janice moved back to Baileys Harbor to live
with her parents. After the war ended Margaret and Gardner settled on Little Marsh
Road, Town of Gibraltar where they raised their family.
Margaret is a lifelong member of St. Mary’s of the Lake Catholic Church (Stella Maris
Parish).She was a charter member of VFW Auxiliary Post 9290 and the Ladies of St.
Mary’s Altar Sodality. She was an active member and held various offices in each
group. She was an active member of the Baileys Harbor Senior Citizens group. She and
Gardner were active participants of the Baileys Harbor Historical Society.
Margaret is survived by daughter Janice Hanson and son Wayne (Kate) Orsted. She is
further survived by Grandchildren Scott (Sheryl) Hanson, Michele Padovano, Jennifer
(Chris Gittens) Orsted and Frederick (Mary) Orsted. Ten Great-Grandchildren, Jonathan
(Tiffany) Hanson, Amber (Jesse) Neuser, Christopher (Crystal) Hanson, Adriana
Hanson, Kole Kotche, Natalie Padovano, William Gittens, Alexander Gittens, Theodore
Orsted and Alaina Orsted. Also Great-Great-Grandchildren, Aliyah Hanson, Trevor
Hanson, Brady Hanson, Aiyana Neuser, Ameliya Neuser, Jordan Neuser, Kaylie
Hanson, Karissa Hanson, Layla Hanson, and Luella Hanson.
She is survived by Sisters In-Laws: Jane Zak Maufort, Mercedes Zak, Pat Orsted,
Wilma Biwer Joyce Hussong, and Joan Slaby (fiance, Dennis McGrath).
She was preceded in death by her husband Gardner, son Gary Orsted, and son-in-law
Michael Hanson. Her siblings: John (Marie) Zak, Andrew Zak, Edward (Mae) Zak,
Gertrude (Edwin) Fromholtz, Martha (James) Powers, Anne (George) Simon, Leo
(Agnes) Zak, Philip (Bernadine) Zak, Mary Zak, Stanley Zak, Joseph (Phyllis) Zak,
Flavian (Marion) Zak, Martin (Alice) Zak, Anton Zak, and Sebastian Zak.
Brother-in-laws: John (Mary) Orsted, Orville Orsted, Edward (Delores) Orsted, Joe and
Mike Biwer, Elaine (Edward) Zahn, Earl Orsted, Ervin Orsted, Alvin (Dixie) Orsted, Dale
(Marie) Orsted, Wayne Hussong.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at St
Mary’s of the Lake Catholic Church in Baileys Harbor, WI. Rev. David Ruby will officiate.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Family will greet relatives and friends at the Church on Saturday from 9:30 AM until the
time of services.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in Margaret’s name.
