Bernie Reinhardt and Ed Anschutz, two of the winningest drivers in Sturgeon Bay racing history, both scored feature wins at the Door County Fair, highlighting racing action at The Hill Raceway Thursday night.
Reinhardt’s win in the Sport Mods was the 26th of his career, while Anschutz did him one better, winning for the 27th time by capturing his 7th in the Street Stock division.
Joining them in victory lane were John Anschutz in the Stock Cars and Scott Schlafke in the Baby Bombers.
For John Anschutz, it was his second win in the division in less than a week as he also topped the class on Sunday night.
The Sunday night win was a thriller, going right down to the wire. Thursday’s was nearly as intense as title contenders Billy LeMieux and Brett Wenzel chased him for the duration. Anschutz led from the drop of the green, as he, LeMieux, Wenzel and Karly Stadler broke from the pack.
Gaining a slight advantage late as LeMieux and Wenzel battled for second, he was able to edge away at the checker to record his 4th career Sturgeon Bay Stock Car win, with LeMieux second and Wenzel third.
Dave Bouche charged up from his 9th row starting spot to pass Stadler late for fourth. Stadler recorded her best Hill feature finish placing fifth.
Reinhardt used an inside move on the 4th lap to take the top spot from Brian Lackie. He led the rest of the race, but was chased the entire way by Aaron Butterbrodt.
Butterbrodt was never more than 2-3 car lengths behind the leader for the duration, but Reinhardt kept control of the preferred line the entire way, never allowing Butterbrodt to pull even.
Jeff Vlies tracked down the lead duo, but without a caution to close the gap sooner, he ran out of time before he could make a play for the lead. Defending champ Craig Dorner remained in title contention with a fourth place run while point leader Tom Stark continued his solid season with a fifth place run, his 5th straight top ten finish.
Bad luck bit Ed Anschutz in his first two runs this year, so this time he left nothing to chance.
He grabbed the lead at the drop of the green, and after two early cautions, build an insurmountable margin over the division’s title contenders who eventually worked their way to the front of the pack.
Kevin Luedtke grabbed second on lap six with point leader Dave DeGrave moving into third five laps later. Without any late cautions to slow him down, Anschutz cruised away to his first win of the season. Behind Luedtke and DeGrave, Ford Malvitz finished fourth with Jeremy Dubois rallying from the 6th row to place fifth.
The 27th win by Anschutz moved back into the all-time top ten win list, tying Dan Ratajczak and Dave Bouche for the 10th spot.
Schlafke led the Baby Bomber feature from lap one as the Everards – Tony and T.J.- battled side by side for second right behind him.
T.J. gained a slight edge on Tony for second as the trio raced into the final turn. But once there, hard contact with the leader sent Schlafke spinning with the checker in sight.
Officials ruled that T.J caused the incident and Schlafke was award the win, his first of the year and second career at the Hill.
Racing resumes Friday evening August 10th with all four regular divisions back in action for Hall of Fame night.
The Hill Raceway is located at the John Miles Fair Park on Sturgeon Bay’s east side, with racing set to get underway Friday at 7:00PM. For updates, check The Hill Raceway’s page on Facebook.
