By Nick Freimuth Packerland Conference champion Sturgeon Bay Girls Soccer went (6-0) during the regular season in conference games. The Clippers were one and done in the tournament. The #11 seed traveled to New Holstein Thursday and fell 1-0 to the Huskies. Sturgeon Bay was not the only team to lose their first tournament game. Every girls soccer team in Door and Kewaunee Counties fell in their post season opener. As a matter of fact, not a single goal was scored by a Door Peninsula team Thursday.
Sevastopol/Gibraltar lost 10-0 to Kohler.
Kewaunee lost 11-0 to Cedar Grove Belgium.
Luxemburg-Casco lost 5-0 to Wrightstown.
Sturgeon Bay Coach Bob Desotelle provided the following summary of his team’s tournament loss: The Sturgeon Bay Clippers traveled to host New Holstein for a Regional game Thursday night. Despite several fantastic stops by keeper McKenna Gibson, the Clippers fell to New Holstein 0-1. With 14 minutes remaining in regulation play, New Holstein scored. “We had a couple chances to go ahead and tie tonight, but were unable to find that finishing piece. New Holstein is a Senior laden team and in the end they found a way to score late in the game. Our defense was very solid tonight. We knew we had to keep the score low. This was a close game tonight and New Holstein is a quality team. We wish them success in the tournament.” Sturgeon Bay finishes the season 8-3-3. “We had a very successful season. We improved consistently, played as a team and laid a solid foundation for next year”.
