By Bob Desotelle Host school Sturgeon Bay had to play “come from behind” soccer Tuesday night at Clark Field to close their regular season against visiting NEW. NEW’s Lydia Nelson found a loose ball inside the 18 and powered a shot past Keeper McKenna Gibson to give NEW a lead they would carry into halftime. Leading 1-0, NEW came out strong in the second half, but a goal by Anna Fischer tied the game midway through the period. After that score, the Clippers turned the pressure up on the NEW defense. Mid fielder Claire Tellstrom finally sealed the win with a goal late in the half giving Sturgeon Bay a 2-1 victory and an undefeated record in the Packerland Conference.
“Our last three wins in conference have all been one goal margins and tough wins” (Coach Desotelle). “We are proud of the way our team has responded under pressure these last five games. They have showed determination and grit when it has been needed most. We played without our starting forward tonight and at half we put Anna Fischer in that position because we were unable to finish despite numerous shots on goal in the first half. She led her team to a very big win and was supported by Claire Tellstrom who scored late in the game to give us the win.”
Sturgeon Bay finishes the regular season 8-2-3 and will travel to host New Holstein Thursday (7:00 p.m. kick off) for a first round Regional matchup.
