The Brewers couldn’t pull off any late inning heroics Saturday after allowing 4 runs in the top of the 9th, falling to the Cubs 5-2. Starting pitching was dominant on each side with Yu Darvish allowing only 2 hits, 1 run and striking out 9 for the Cubs, and Zach Davies allowing 4 hits, 1 run, and 8 strikeouts for Milwaukee. Offensively, Milwaukee only had 4 hits, including an Eric Thames home run in the 4th. Milwaukee had a 2-1 lead going into the 9th, following a Lorenzo Cain sacrifice fly that scored Jett Bandy in the 8th. With closer Corey Knebel on the DL following a hamstring injury on Thursday, it was Jacob Barnes on to close the 9th when Milwaukee got in trouble. Two errors and a walk would load the bases for Ben Zobrist, who tied the game on an infield single to Eric Thames. Ian Happ gave Chicago the lead after a 2 RBI single giving the Cubs a 4-2 lead. Pitcher Jon Lester came in to pinch hit and extended the lead to 5-2 on a sac bunt. The Brewers couldn’t rally in the bottom of the 9th with Ryan Braun and Jonathan Villar each striking out. The Brewers fall to 5-4 and play the final game of the four-game series Sunday at 1:10 with Chase Anderson on the mound for Milwaukee.
