The Southern Door varsity boys basketball team saw an incredible season come to an end Thursday night 64-50 against Valders. Broadcast on 104.1 FM WRLU, the Eagles trailed 33-13 at half time and never were able to claw their way back into the game. The Vikings hit seven first half three-point shots and were firing on all cylinders most of the game. Kyle Tuma, who will be playing for UW-Platteville next year scored 20 points to lead all scorers. Teammate Treyner Sundsmo also notched 20 points in the win.
Packerland Conference Player of the Year Kyle Daoust scored 12 of his team leading 17 points in the second half. The junior ended the year with 9995 career points and is sure to break the 1,000 point mark in the first game next season. Ryan Claflin scored ten points and was the only other Eagle to hit double digit in the season finale.
It marked the third season in a row that Valders eliminated Southern Door from the post season. It had happened in the regional tournament the last two seasons. Thursday night’s game was on a much bigger stage, however. The Eagles graduate three seniors but none bigger than Sam Gerend. His nine points tonight do not tell the whole story of the impact he had on the program. He will be sorely missed next year but the nucleus of this years undefeated conference champion squad will be back next year with even bigger expectations.
