The road to 1,000 points for Southern Door senior Meghan LaCrosse has been a long and winding path to say the very least. The countless practices, Southern Door varsity road trips, AAU practices and tournaments, a broken ankle while training prior to her junior year. Through it all Meghan did it with her trademark smile, a lot of hard work and pure determination.
The Southern Door senior hit 1,000 career points with four minutes left in the second half of a 54-36 win over Gibraltar Tuesday. The basket came on, of all things, a hustle play. It was an offensive rebound off a missed free throw that got LaCrosse to the magic number.
The fleet-footed center has made a living on hustle plays. Her never ending effort has been on display for four years on the varsity level for Southern Door. This mark may have been set even earlier if the broken ankle doesn’t happen heading into her junior year. It was just a bump in the road for Meghan.
While her basketball skills are incredible. Her work with 4H, at the county fair, on her family farm and in the classroom have impressed me the most. There are two things you can bet on occurring every year at the Door County Fair, the chocolate shakes will be incredible and Meghan LaCrosse will be there showing her steers.
During the recent streak of 20 to 30 below zero wind chills, most kids would be hunkered down inside. Not Meghan LaCrosse. She was not only at basketball practice, but doing chores and doing the “pre-season” work on her cattle for the 2018 Door County Fair.
LaCrosse has a 3.6 GPA and is deciding between Iowa State and Madison for college. She will be studying Agricultural BioChemistry. If she chooses Madison, she will try to play for the Badgers Women’s Basketball Team as a walk-on.
There is no off-season for Meghan LaCrosse. Congratulations on eclipsing 1,000 career points for the Southern Door Eagles. This is a testament to the old adage, “Hard work really does pay off.”
