The college basketball season got underway Friday night as the Wisconsin Badgers and Marquette Golden Eagles registered their first victories.
In Madison, the Badgers used their big men to run past South Carolina State 85-50. Forward Andy Van Vilet shook off his rust and collected 18 points and eight rebounds while teammate Ethan Happ registered a double-double in a 20 point, 11 rebound effort. The Kohl Center will rock again Sunday when the Badgers host Yale.
In Milwaukee, the Golden Eagles fought through injuries to win 80-59 over visiting Mount St. Mary’s. Defense forced the Mountaineers to shoot just 45 percent from the field and 16 turnovers. Senior guard Andrew Rowsey led the way offensively with 23 points and five assists. Purdue comes to the Milwaukee next when Marquette hosts one of the Gavitt Tip Off games at 7:30 p.m.
While the Green Bay Phoenix men’s team has to sweat it out until Tuesday before their first game in DeKalb against Northern Illinois, the women’s team hosts Chattanooga at the Kress Center Saturday at noon.
