Wausau East had not won a game since 2014 entering Friday, but that streak came to an end in a 17-14 win over Southern Door.
Southern Door fell behind 3-0 early in the second quarter after both teams failed to score in the opening quarter. Caleb Gruzynski connected on a 22-yard field goal.
After a couple stalled drives, the Eagles fell down 10-0 with 18 seconds remaining in the first half when Jack Kane connected on a 57-yard pass to Caleb Moses. That would be the score in to the break and after three-quarters.
The Lumberjacks would score early in the fourth quarter when Kane ran it in from 1-yard out making the score 17-0.
Southern Door’s comeback would start midway through the fourth on a Derik LeCaptain 3-yard run and then would make it quickly 17-14 when the Eagles defense got a much-needed stop then LeCaptain found the end zone again from 4-yards out with two minutes left.
Time management would be the difference the rest of the way as Southern Door was down to only one timeout with 1:40 left and the Lumberjacks were able to run out the clock.
The Eagles will return home next Friday to take on the Oconto Blue Devils.
