The Southern Door Eagles look to capture their third Packerland Conference championship in four seasons when they face their county rivals Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol inside the Clippers gymnasium Thursday night. Coming off an emotional home victory against Kewaunee 31-30, the Eagles headed to New London for the Cutler Classic. Tory Jandrin (195) and Michael Bertrand (160) took first place in their weight classes, while Mason Davis, Evan Blasier, Seth Suess, Raul Lopez, Ben Kieler, River Pawelski, and Ben Hoida all placed. Pawelski had to drop out of the tournament in the semifinals due to illness, but expects to be ready to go.
Sturgeon Bay also participated in the Cutler Classic, tying Oostburg for 13th place. Lucas Stenzel was the top finisher for the Clippers/Pioneer co-op squad with a 3rd place finish at 138 pounds. Peyton Hurth, Ezra Haight, Liam Ostrand-Kolstad, Nathan Hendrickson, Collin Mirkes, and Trevor Wilke all placed in the 16-team tournament.
A chance at a conference title does hang in the balance this evening. According to conference commissioner Mike Holtz, here is what needs to happen for a team to win the title with Southern Door, Kewaunee, and Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol hanging in the balance: the Conference team championship will be determined by the won/loss record in Conference competition. In the case of a two-team tie, the tiebreaker will be head-to-head competition in the Conference dual match. In the case of a three-team tie, the first tie-breaker will be total points scored in Conference dual matches and the second tie-breaker will be total points differential (margin of victory) in dual Conference matches.
No matter what happens, you will be able to catch the action with Tim Kowols and Greg Letter on 104.1 WRLU beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the pre-match show and the first whistle at 7.
