In a match that will be remembered for a long time, the Southern Door Eagles squeaked past the Kewaunee Storm in a Packerland Conference matchup heard on 104.1 WRLU Thursday night.
After Austin Veeser captured a decision over Ben Kielar for Kewaunee, the Eagles and the Storm traded forfeits heading into the 132 lb match. River Pawelski registered the 5-2 decision of Cam Hanrahan, who moved up to face Pawelski from the 126 lb weight class. The Storm’s Jesse Steinhorst pinned Ben Hoida before Jared Conard (6-4) and Raul Lopez (4-3) registered decisions for the Eagles. Southern Door and Kewaunee traded pins at 160 lb (Michael Bertrand- SD) and 170 lb (Travis Reinke- KEW) before Seth Suess caused the crowd to erupt with an overtime, sudden death pin at 182 pounds for the Eagles. Trevor Pribek (195) and Kyle Steinhorst (285) captured wins for Kewaunee, but a major decision by Tory Jandrin (220) put the match out of reach and into the hands of Southern Door.
Southern Door heads to New London for a varsity tournament while Kewaunee head to a 13-team tourney in Clintonville. The next broadcast of Eagles wrestling on 104.1 WRLU will be next Thursday when Southern Door travels to visit their county rivals Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol.
