James McLeod Thorp (Finn), age 89 died peacefully at Good Samaritan Scandia Village on January 2, 2017. Jim was born to the late Merle and Edna (McLeod) Thorp on September 27, 1927. Upon graduating from Gibraltar High School he enlisted in the US Army during World War II. When he returned to Fish Creek he met and married Audrey Irene Severson on January 1, 1948. After the birth of their 1st child Jim and Audrey moved to Milwaukee and later to Brookfield, WI. He retired as a time-study engineer from Oster and did consulting jobs on his own even a job in Taiwan where he and Audrey spent a month. After the death of Audrey, Jim returned to Door County with his 2nd wife Donna Johnson Thorp from Gills Rock.
Jim is the grandson of Door County’s first white settler, Increase Claflin, great grandnephew of Asa Thorp, the founder of Fish Creek and the great grandson of Jacob Thorp, founder of Egg Harbor. He was very proud of the family history.
Jim is survived by his five children Christopher James Thorp, Kristen Thorp Ziniel (Michael), Sandra Jamie Thorp, Patricia Audrey Thorp, (Mike Shinn) and Steven Haskell Thorp; his grandchildren Nicholas S., Nicholas Z., Jennifer, Meagan, Jacob, Jason, Jamie, Justin, Jessica, Tyler and Jordan; and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents, his brothers Duncan and Kenneth Thorp and his beloved wives Audrey Irene Severson Thorp and Donna Marie Johnson Thorp.
Jim was a talented craftsman, building everything from boats to furniture with his skilled hands. He loved fishing, gardening, hiking in the woods and Chambers Island excursions.
A memorial service will be held at the Community Church of Fish Creek, 9422 Cottage Row Rd., Fish Creek, WI 54212 on January 14, 2017 at 11:00 am with a luncheon to follow downstairs.
Jim loved to donate his time helping others. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be made out to Eagle Tower Fund for rebuilding one of Jim’s favorite destinations.
