Over the course of the last decade, there has been a large increase in the population numbers of the Whitefish who have now migrated into the Bay of Green Bay and have inhabited other areas of Northern Door County. The Whitefish migrated into the Bay of Green Bay since their ecosystem in Lake Michigan was dwindling. According to J.J Malvitz, this migration has sparked the interest of scientists and biologists from the DNR who will begin to study the Whitefish in their new habitat.
Malvitz says that with this increase in population, this could potentially attract more ice fisherman since the Whitefish is the most abundant species of fish living in the Bay of Green Bay. He says that fishing for Whitefish has become so popular that lodging businesses have extended their hours for the winter and that this “Whitefish Boom” can create a economic stimulus in the coming months.
