In northern Door County, clearing roads and neighborhoods after heavy snowfall has continued to help communities function and go about daily life no matter what the weather conditions are. At the YMCA in Fish Creek, it is important for the facility’s parking lot to be clear so that patrons can walk into the facility without slipping on ice and risk injury. Director Heidi Erickson says that snow plows did a good job not only when plowing the Y, but also the surrounding area highways as well following the recent winter storms.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the timing of when snow plows begin plowing can vary depending on the strength of the winter storm. There are over 1,500 county highway department employees that are licensed to operate a snowplow. Approximately 770 of them are permanently assigned to the state maintained highway system.
