Sturgeon Bay alderperson Kelly Catarozoli hopes rezoning a portion of Jefferson Street will give property owners a little more flexibility in the future. Currently zoned as C-2, property owners that wanted to convert their buildings from 50 percent to 100 percent residential would have to go through a costly zoning board of appeals process or spend even more money in renovations to keep it in compliance with current codes. By rezoning the area to become C-5, Catarozoli hopes the new zoning code would give property owners more flexibility without some of the costs and red tape.
Catarozoli says a drawback would be the potential for the area to become less commercial. The topic has been brought up before, according to Catarozoli, but she says it most likely fizzled out because of a desire to keep the area mostly commercial.
