A day of baking fruit cakes has helped provide the financial foundation for many homes for low-income families in Door County. Last week, volunteers for Door County Habitat for Humanity gathered to bake fruit cakes in a tradition as old as the organization itself. Door County Habitat for Humanity Board Secretary Kathy Sanden says the practice started with an idea from one board member.
The approximately 700 fruitcakes are sold at area churches and businesses annually to help support its home builds and Brush with Kindness programs. The Door County Habitat for Humanity hopes to celebrate its 25th year with its 40th home build next year.
