William E. Goettelman

William “Bill” Edward Goettelman, 59,
of Sturgeon Bay, passed Friday afternoon (April 25, 2008) at
home with family at his side.
He was born June 7, 1948 in Sturgeon
Bay, the son of the late Royal David and Ruth Margaret
(Acker) Goettelman. He graduated from Sturgeon Bay High
School in 1966. Bill went on to receive his B.S. in
Business from UW Milwaukee in 1971. He married Cynthia
Knipfer at St. Joseph Catholic Church on May 20, 1972. Bill
and Cynthia started their family and first business in
Milwaukee. They returned to Sturgeon Bay to be close to
family and their roots. In 1982, he purchased the Bunda
Building in downtown Sturgeon Bay where he operated FLS
Banners.
Bill gave freely of all he had, even if he didn't have
it at the time. His motto was, "figure it out", which was
strongly reflected in the actions he took in life. During
Bill's more formidable years he focused on family and his
business. He fathered, raised, mentored and loved six
children. Bill endeavored in many business ventures. His
drive to continually improve processes and develop new ideas
resulted in one patent and many screen printing
contraptions. Bill was nationally recognized several times
for excellence in screen printing on fabric by receiving
Golden Squeegee Awards from the Screen Graphics
International Association. Bill loved his community and was
grateful to have lived in Sturgeon Bay and raise his family
in such a wonderful place. His love for Sturgeon Bay and
Door County inspired him to work as a representative in the
community. He served as a member of the Saint Joseph School
Board and as the head of the Sail Training Foundation.
These organizations reflect his strong faith, belief in
education and desire to continually challenge himself and
others. Bill spent his last years serving as a community
representative. First he was as an Alderman for City of
Sturgeon Bay and then a Door County Council Board member.
He was also a board member of the Steel Bridge committee.
Steel Bridge and the music festival
spoke to Bill's great love of the arts as well as
appreciation and respect for the past and the others that
have come before us.
An artist himself, he used his
talents to entertain others and teach them of his
appreciation for all the arts have to offer. Bill's life
was overflowing with love, creativity, service and fun. He
spent his free time sailing, ice boating
with the Lama Wama Ice Boat Squadron, golfing, playing
tennis, playing music and loving his children and
grandchildren. In Bill's early days he was an actor,
musician and string artist. He also enjoyed writing and
found a hidden talent as a painter of waves in his later
life. His creativity and zest for living was an inspiration
to many others in his very extended family. He frequently
opened his heart and home to all that needed encouragement,
support or just a shoulder to lean on.
Survivors include his loving wife, Cynthia, six
adoring children, Cain (Terry), Gretel both of Sturgeon Bay,
Seth (Elly) of Madison, Taylor (fiancée, Carrie Haen) of
Sturgeon Bay, Hailey (Sam) Shea of Portland, Oregon, Libby
of Sturgeon Bay, grandchildren Dreaden, Saul, Willow, and
