The Milwaukee Brewers made a pair of aggressive moves to jump start a likely active off season this week. Infielders Mat Gamel and Taylor Green were placed on waivers after each player struggled with injuries and productivity on the field in 2013.
Gamel has not played a regular season game since 2011 and would have been arbitration-eligible had he remained on the roster, even though he’s managed only 240 Major League at-bats.
Green suffered an injury to his left hip in spring training. He will be 27 in November and could still be attractive to the Brewers on a Minor League deal because he can play first base, which remains wide open, and third base, where Aramis Ramirez is heading into the final year of his contract.
