Championship night will certainly be remembered for a long time by all. Scott Reinhardt was able to hold off Shawn Havel to score his first feature win of the season in the IMCA Stock Cars at Thunderhill Raceway. Other feature winners were James Tebon (IMCA Modified), Dennis Miesler (IMCA Sport Mod), Bill Hayes (IMCA Hobby Stock) and Mike Sargent (Street Stock)
It was one of those nights where every feature could be the lead story. We will start with the IMCA Stocks which saw an opening lap crash that ended night for Jeremy Anschutz and Jamie Suchocki. Point leader Dave Bouche was also caught up in the wreck, giving the defending champion a damaged radiator. Bouche had to finish 12th or better to clinch the title. As the race restarted Scott Reinhardt raced to the lead. Bouche continued to race until his temperature gauge was pegged at 250 degrees, his car slowed and headed to the pits ending his night.
Title contender Shawn Havel hauled tail to the runner up position. Havel pressured Reinhardt for the lead. A full season of wear and tear began to set in as cars began to drop like flies. With 5 laps remaining there were only 3 cars left running. Reinhardt was able to hold off a hard charging Havel to score his first feature win of the season. Brett Koehler also battled mechanical issues to finish third, Dan Sell and Tony Bouche completed the top five. Despite not finishing the feature Dave Bouche was able to secure enough points to earn his second track championship in a row.
The opening lap of the IMCA Sport Mod main event was one fans won’t forget any time soon as Cody Rass and Andy Ratajczak wheel hopped resulting in Rass barrel rolling down the front stretch. Rass’s racer came to a halt on the driver side and the fuel cell was ripped out of the car lying next to the driver. The red flag waved stopping the field. Sturgeon Bay Fire and Rescue were called in to extricate Rass from his battered machine. Rass was alert and speaking to track officials. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital with back and neck pain, any additional info on his wellbeing will be posted on our facebook page.
Lost in the mix was the point battle of Bernie Reinhardt and Randy LeMieux Jr. who came into the night just three points apart. Dennis Miesler was able to work past Rick LeMieux on lap 3 for the lead. Miesler held on the rest of the way to score his first feature win of the season. LeMieux Jr. did all he could but came up short with a second place finish, Reinhardt placed third, Kelsy Hayes rallied to fourth after a trip down pit lane and Jarred VanLaanen rounded out the top five. Reinhardt became the first driver to win back to back championships in the Sport Mods.
James Lee Tebon fought off a hard charging Todd Dart to score his 3rd feature win of the season in the IMCA Modifieds. With 2 laps remaining Tebon and Dart touched sending Dart sliding through the grass, ending his bid for the win. Eric Scribner raced to second in his first visit of the season, Rookie Greg Gretz was third, Scott Ratajczak came home fourth and Eric Arneson was fifth. For Tebon it was his second championship in a row.
Bill Hayes’s return to racing was a successful one as he worked past Justin Hartel for the lead on lap 4 of the IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Hayes was able to hold off the competition for the win in only his second start of the season. Joe Hegnet came home second, Scott Boulanger was third, CJ Weckler fourth and Derek Moede was fifth. Boulanger was crowned champion of the division, the first of his career.
Mike Sargent muscled his way past Rookie Joey Scoon to win his first ever Street Stock main. Brandon Peterson crossed the finish line on fire and still finished second, Jeremy DuBois was third, Keith Kickbusch and Tony Everard completed the top five. Kickbusch was able to secure the championship, his second of the weekend after claiming the crown at Luxemburg Speedway on Friday,
