The Brewers were held hitless through five and two thirds innings last night before they broke a scoreless tie in the top of the ninth inning. A five-run ninth inning catapulted Milwaukee to game one of a four game series with the Cubs at Wrigley Field 5-0.
Kyle Lohse and his Cubs counterpart Jeff Samardzija each had batters guessing all night. Neither factored into the decision, but the two saw their ERA’s drop. Lohse scattered five hits and three walks to finish July with a 4-1 record and a 2.25 ERA in six starts. Samardzija allowed only three hits and one walk with seven strikeouts in seven scoreless innings.
In the Brewers’ ninth inning, Carlos Gomez's bloop single to center field snapped the scoreless tie. Jeff Bianchi and Rickie Weeks each added two-run doubles to sink the “Loveable Losers” in a battle of the NL Central’s worst teams.
