Second Annual NFL Alumni Fishing Tournament Exceeded All Expectations

To say the second annual Green Bay Packers Chapter of the NFL Alumni Association Fishing Tournament was better than year one would be the understatement of the year. Thursday night’s banquet dinner included 17 former NFL’ers including Jerry Kramer, Paul Coffman, Frank Winters, Lynn Dickey and Billy Schroeder. The dinner crowd went from 69 paid attendees in year one to 233 this year.

Mother Nature did her part too. After a tense morning, anglers hesitantly loaded boats heading towards Lake Michigan for the salmon tournament. A year earlier, five brave boats returned with sick participants after 8 -12 foot waves spoiled the event. Friday, calm 1 -3 footers were handled by everyone without a single angler hanging over the side of the boat.

The salmon tournament championship team included former Packers wide receiver Charles Jordan, Brandon Berner, Ben Royce, Mike Wickman, Clark Baker and Nick Freimuth on Team Plano. Fishing on the Reel Action Charter boat captained by Jeff Gutschow and Max Bornemann, the team blew away the competition with five nice salmon to weigh in. The team also had the biggest salmon of the day. Team Lund/Mercury came in second captained by Fritz Peterson and Associated Bank took third.

The Bass Tournament was won by Ministry Door County Medical Center for the second year in a row. They also had a team take second in the bass contest. Anglers like Kevin Grohskopf and Matt Luders reeled in the winning weight.

Gary and Cheryl Nault working with Casey and Nicole Rabach made the fishing tournament at least three times bigger and better than last year. Door County Charities and Rabach’s new charity “The Fifth Quarter” benefited from the outing. Participants and sponsors all left saying they want to expand their involvement next year and look forward to making it even more exciting in 2014.
