A disastrous night on defense led the Milwaukee Brewers to a 12-5 loss against the New York Mets at Miller Park Friday.
Rookie pitcher Johnny Hellweg had trouble finding the strike zone in his home debut and exited the game after 3 2/3 innings. During Hellweg’s stint on the mound the Mets racked up seven hits, seven runs (three earned) and five walks. On top of that, Aramis Ramirez committed two errors and Jean Segura added another for the Brewers.
Carlos Gomez offered Milwaukee the team’s only bright spot of the night. The center fielder went 4-for-5 and took a home run away from pinch-hitter Marlon Byrd with a leaping grab in the seventh inning.
Game two of the series starts tonight at 6:15.
