Door County Cross Country Ski Report for March 15, 2013

For those of us who love to ski, our wish came true this week. Though we had rain and warm temperatures last weekend, it was not enough to lose all our base. The temperatures dropped and the trails firmed up again! There has been skiing all week and it looks like we are getting more snow and the temperatures will be plenty cold to keep for it at least another week. Hold off on pumping up your bike tires and get out for some fine spring skiing! All ski areas are open and current ski conditions are as follows:

 Potawatomi State Park Conditions:

Trails still in good condition. The black and the blue trails were last groomed on Monday March 4. The skate decks were leveled and classic tracks were reset. All trails are open and in good shape. Classic tracks hard and fast. Skate lanes hard and icy. (3/8/13 Leif Hagman)

Whitefish Dunes State Park Conditions:

Trails haven't been groomed for a while, but are mostly skiable. There is still a very solid base and they will be groomed as soon as there is new snow. (3/14/13 Rich Dirks)

Crossroads at Big Creek Conditions:

All trails were dragged and leveled on Thursday morning. A track was set. Plenty of snow with only a few icy areas, therefore, skiing is very good. Trails will be fast in the early morning. If we get any additional snow the trails will be rolled and groomed over the weekend. We have some of the best spring skiing at the Crossroads. Remember that we have a community ski every Sunday from 1:30 to 3:30 with free use of our cross country ski equipment. (3/14/13 Jim Maki)

Peninsula State Park Conditions:

Snow depth varies with up to six inches on the trails. We groomed most of Peninsula Park today (Thursday). The conditions would best be described as good to very good depending where you are skiing. The areas under the cedar and pine trees have less snow. By Saturday afternoon the entire park will be groomed and if we get just a couple of inches, I would guess that the conditions will be very good to excellent throughout. (3/14/13 Jeff Pfeifer)

Newport State Park

It was wonderful to have our trails open and in great condition for so many weeks now after a couple of years with little snow. Trails last groomed for classic on Monday March 4th. Trails are in good to excellent condition. Tracks are surprisingly hard and fast early in the morning but soften up in the afternoon. (3/8/13 Newport office)
