The WIAA Division 2 sectional final all area wrestling fans were anticipating came to fruition last night when Luxemburg-Casco and Oconto Falls each breezed through their sectional semi-final dual. The Spartans topped Little Chute 68-9. Oconto Falls doubled up Wittenberg-Birnamwood 48-24.
Then the Bay Conference re-match. Two teams that have become very familiar with one another, L-C and Oconto Falls met in the sectional final with a trip to Madison on the line.
Repeating recent history, the top-ranked Spartans again topped the Panthers and earned their way back to the UW Fieldhouse with a 35-22 victory. L-C won eight matches and bested their Bay Conference rival for the seventh straight time.
L-C may have eliminated the very best teams in the state at the regional and sectional level. The Spartans earned a hard fought win over the No. 2 ranked team in the state as regional host Two Rivers could not upset Luxemburg-Casco. Oconto Falls was ranked third in the state.
The Luxemburg-Casco wrestling team is headed back to state for a 15th time looking for their 11th team title in program history. Next up, Ellsworth for a state semi-final on March 9.
