Trailing by 13 points with only four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, 99% of high school teams would come out on the short end of the stick. Not the Algoma girls basketball team! The most amazing comeback in varsity basketball over the past decade was capped by a buzzer beater three point heave by senior guard Taylor Schmidt for a 49-46 victory.
Additional chairs were set up in the corner of the Algoma High School Gymnasium for the near capacity "War on the Shore." The Storm and the Wolves did not disappoint either. Kewaunee was the top ranked team in the state in Division 3. Algoma certainly knocked them from the top spot in the weekly poll. Algoma will likely move up from their number four state ranking in Division 4.
Schmidt paced Algoma with 13 points and five steals. Junior Kennedy Blahnik led the team in scoring with 17 points, added eight rebounds and six steals. Kewaunee was led by Jill Kleiman’s 22 points and six steals. Kelsey Stangel added 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The gym was packed with high school and college coaches trying to scout two of the top teams in the state. Last night's "War on the Shore" may go down as the best ever. Congratulations to each team for playing at the highest level in the state.
