University of Wisconsin in Madison athletic director Barry Alvarez has cut all ties with former football coach Bret Bielema and will coach the Badgers in the Rose Bowl himself. For Alvarez, a New Year's Day matchup with Stanford awaits his team in the Rose Bowl Game.
The Wisconsin State Journal reported Wednesday that team captains asked Alvarez to coach the team, and he agreed to do so. Alvarez is a College Football Hall of Famer who led the Badgers to three Rose Bowl wins. He retired in 2005, turning the program over to his handpicked successor, Bielema.
Former coach Bret Bielema said at his introductory news conference at Arkansas on Wednesday, "They might finally win one." Bielema lost the previous two Rose Bowls as the leader of the Badgers.
