After building a 5-0 lead in the top of the first, the Bullfrogs lost their third straight game on Monday night by a score of 11-6 to the Loggers in La Crosse.
Both teams had big first innings offensively. David Armendariz opened up the scoring when he came in to score on a wild pitch. Clayton Eslick, Duncan McAlpine, and Collin Shaw each had RBIs for the Bullfrogs. McAlpine had the biggest blow of the inning, a two run home run to right to score himself and Billy Moon. It was McAlpine’s second home run of the series and third of the season.
The Loggers came right back in their half of the frame, plating three runs to cut the lead to 5-3. The biggest hit was Bobby Juan’s double down the left-field line, plating Tyler Kuresa and Kevin Kramer.
A Northwoods League rule got both bullpens active early in the game. Both starting pitchers, Scott Schultz for the Loggers and Bryce Bellin for the Bullfrogs, were unable to come out for a second inning of work because they each threw over 35 pitches in the first.
Green Bay tacked on one run in the second inning when Jason McMurray scored on a wild pitch to make the score 6-3.
LaCrosse plated two runs in the fifth to make the score 6-5. The Loggers took an 8-6 lead in an error-plagued sixth, and extended their lead to 11-6 in the eighth.
Bellin gave up one earned run in an inning of work on the mound. He was relieved by Parker Schrage, who gave up two earned runs in four scoreless innings. Bud Jeter (1-3) took the loss. He didn’t give up any earned runs in two innings of work. Robb Woodcock gave up three earned runs in the eighth inning.
LaCrosse has now clinched the first half title in the Northwoods League South. With the loss, Green Bay falls to 20-13 on the season. This was the Bullfrogs’ third consecutive loss.
