The Algoma Wolves softball team will be playing at Goodman Diamond on the campus of the University of Wisconsin in Madison Friday. WRLU 104.1 FM will broadcast the game with pre-game coverage starting at 3:00 PM. First pitch will be thrown out at approximately 3:30 PM.
Defending champion Poynette is making its seventh State Tournament appearance and will be a great test for Algoma in the state semi-final Friday. In addition to last season, the Pumas won the Division 2 title in 1998 and the Division 3 crown in 2005. They also have had a pair of runner-up finishes, in 1999 and 2003. They are the champions in the North Division of the Capitol Conference, and they have advanced to State through the Tomah Sectional with a convincing 8-0 victory over Arcadia in the final.
Algoma will make its first appearance since its only other State Tournament experience in 2004 when the Wolves fell in the semifinals. They get back to the State semifinals with a 5-1 win over Horicon in the Horicon Sectional final. This spring, the Wolves won the Packerland Conference title.
Nick Freimuth and Tim Schmidt will provide the play-by-play and color commentary for Door and Kewaunee County listeners on 104.1 FM WRLU Friday and if needed in the state championship game Saturday.
