Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin has been national recognized by the B.A.S.S (Bass Angler Sportsmen Society as the number one bass fishing destination in the country. They were selected out of nearly a hundred competing areas.
Many anglers who have had an opportunity to fish these water know the potential of this area to produce both quantity and quality smallmouth. As a professional guide, and media relations manager of the Sturgeon Bay Open Bass Tournament this comes as no surprise.
The SBOBT which was a community organized event started nearly 24 years ago to promote the area as well as catch and release “smallies.” Since then the tournament has been a good indicator on the health of the fishery.
Year in and year out, the tournament has seen bigger bags of fish hit the scales every year. This catch and release ethic has been a large contributing factor to the success of “smallies” on the Door Peninsula.
Last year a fish was weighed in that was just over eight pounds; ounces off the state record. This is what made heads turn and drew the attention of many. The angling opportunities will continue for years to come!
The area north of Little Sturgeon Bay on the Green Bay side of the Door Peninsula was votes number one by B.A.S.S. Little Sturgeon south to Green Bay also checked in on the list at number 30 in the United States.
