If you have a weak ticker, the Algoma Wolves girls basketball team may be hazardous for your health. If you love drama, suspense, and action then you loved what you saw at the Resch Center last night in the WIAA Division 4 state semi-final.
The Algoma Wolves a.k.a “The Cardiac Kids” needed overtime for the second time in three games to punch their ticket to the state final tomorrow afternoon. Besting St. Mary’s Springs 42-37, Algoma will next face Cuba City for a chance to claim back-to-back state titles.
Cuba City advanced in the other state semi-final 52-39 over Regis. Saturday’s game is expected to tip-off between 12:45 and 1:00 PM. WRLU 104.1 FM will begin our pre-game coverage at 12:15 PM. The game will also be streamed live at DoorCountyDailyNews.com.
Last night sophomore sensation Baleigh Delorit scored a team high 14 points propelling her team to victory. Senior Kennedy Blahnik iced the game in overtime with her flawless free throw shooting and finished with 12 points.
Credit the Ledgers 1-3-1 half court zone defense for taking Algoma out of their flow offensively. The Wolves struggled to score in the second half. The Wolves also turned up the defensive intensity. They finished the way they started.
A 7-0 first quarter lead put Algoma on top early and they closed similarly. Algoma shut St Mary’s out 5-0 in the extra period.
Anna Dier played through a diagnosis of pneumonia and scored seven points. Point guard Meg Ryan added six points in a total team effort.
