Southern Door Wrestling Hoists Conference Championship Banner

Southern Door left nothing to chance last night in Packerland Conference wrestling winning 64-6 over rival Sturgeon Bay. An opportunity to claim their first ever conference title brought out the best in the Eagle wrestlers. The team nearly swept all 14 weight classes. A 1-0 Noah Giese decision and a 3-2 decision for Lucas Stephenson were the only victories for the Clippers.

Those two matches were two of the most exciting of the night. The near capacity crowd was on their feet as time expired in each. In fact, so many people piled into Eagle Gymnasium that extra bleachers needed to be pulled out.

The Eagles tallied seven pins while accomplishing their first ever undefeated dual meet season. Southern Door winners via pin were Jacob Englebert, Nolan Wagner, Ben Hoida, River Pawelski, Michael Bertrand, Hunter Pawelski and Michael Letter. Michah King added a decision while the other three victories for Southern Door were forfeits.

Here is a complete summary from Eagle wrestling coach Jerry Englebert following an exciting night of wrestling in Southern Door.

Great performance again tonight by the Eagles. Jacob and Nolan got us started with pins and set the tempo for the rest of the team. Tory Jandrin followed with a great match at 170. Tory wrestled an outstanding match for a young wrestler against Stephenson, a highly ranked senior. He was close on a couple takedowns in the first period and was trailing 1-0 before giving up a takedown in the middle of the third. He quickly earned the one point escape to get within a takedown and then was awarded a point for stalling giving him a chance for the outright win but could not get the takedown in the last 30 seconds.

Micah King followed with a great match for him winning by major decision to get us back on track. After some FFT's in the heavier weights Ben, River and Michael earned pins to secure the win. Triston Scoville also wrestled a good match against Noah Geise in a very defensive match dropping a hard fought match 1-0. Hunter followed with a pin setting up a rematch for the final match of the night. Michael Letter and Collin Mirkes had wrestled at Oshkosh on the water with Mirkes getting the pin. Tonight Michael was able to come from behind in a very exciting match to pull ahead and then earn the pin.
