The Alumni Spotlight focuses on Michael Blizel of Southern Door’s 2008 high school class. Blizel played football, basketball and baseball for the Eagles and will be inducted into the Southern Door Sports Hall of Fame next month, alongside Courtney Wautier ’09.
Following high school, Blizel attended the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where he played baseball. After a year and a half, he transferred to the UW-Stout and played quarterback for the Blue Devils under coaches Dan McCarty and Clayt Birmingham, both of whom are Door County natives. Upon graduation in May 2013, Blizel moved to Arizona. He is currently playing baseball for two independent league teams in the Southwest.
When it comes to his favorite high school sports memory, Blizel recalls the baseball team’s season-ending run to complete his senior season and high school career.
Blizel says his toughest one-on-one matchup was guarding Sturgeon Bay’s 6’7” Jake Bscherer in basketball.
He always viewed the Sturgeon Bay Clippers as Southern Door’s biggest rival and always looked forward to competing against them.
Blizel also reflects on the community support he received and the friendships he forged during his high school career.
As far as his advice to current student athletes, Blizel recommends that they enjoy every moment and not take anything for granted. He also encourages athletes to “take advantage of every opportunity that [they] are presented.”
Blizel resides in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he works as a consultant for an industrial rehab company that helps find employment for people with disabilities.
