Spartans Surge Late For Victory Over Clippers
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com

December 5, 2007

It was a stellar game of fast break basketball between Sturgeon Bay and Luxemburg-Casco last night in non-conference boy’s hoops. The broadcast on 104.1 FM WRLU featured a dominant performance by the Clippers in the first half. Led by Simon Rabas who wracked up 17 points in the first half alone, Sturgeon Bay held a 10 point lead at the break. L-C went on to win 60-50.
Luxemburg-Casco woke up in the second half and erased the ten-point deficit on their way to a ten-point victory on the road. The rivalry revisited lived up to the hype. L-C was led in scoring by Jason Jandrin with 21. Jake Sinkula was a force in the paint and finished with 19. Josh D. VandenBush chipped in 14 points to pace the Spartans. L-C travels to New London on Friday for their Bay Conference opener. Sturgeon Bay plays Sevastopol Thursday night.

Familiar Voice Floods WSBW Airwaves Again
By Paul Schmitt DoorCountyDailyNews.com
December 4, 2007

A familiar voice joined us at the C & C Supper Club in Fish Creek for the Sports Page last night.  Bob Schlicht, who was the voice of the Sturgeon Bay Clippers athletics on 104.1FM WRLU for the last six years. Last night he talked about some of the most memorable broadcasts of his career.  The 2004 Division 4 state football championship game between Sturgeon Bay and St Francis was at the top of his list.  The Clippers won 21-14 to claim their first football championship in school history.  Schlicht says he is looking forward to  broadcasting this winter, as he will team with Paul Schmitt to bring Northern Door listeners Gibraltar Viking girls and boys basketball on 105.1FM WSBW.

Packerland Conference Wrestling
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
December 3, 2007

The Packerland Conference Wrestling season will include three quad meets. With the loss of Denmark and Luxemburg-Casco, the Packerland was left with just four teams. Wrestling
programs for Kewaunee, Southern Door, Oconto and the co-op of Sturgeon Bay and Sevastopol are all that remains in what was a highly regarded six program conference dominated by L-C.
Assistant wrestling coach at Sturgeon Bay, Joe Stutting says the new scenario is unfortunate for all parties involved. The Packerland was seeking another conference to take in their four schools to make a conference tournament and conference awards legit. Stutting described his thought on the Packerland Conference for wrestling.
(Audio Here)
The Olympian Conference turned down the Packerland's request to join their schools. Stutting said they used the travel excuse as the main reason the agreement would not work.
(Audio Here)
If a wrestlers manages a (3-0) season in the new Packerland Conference they would be awarded a first team all conference status. A one-loss season would likely be second team all conference, according to Stutting. The conference tournament has been canceled and all schools have struggled to fill their schedules. The Sturgeon Bay wrestling assistant coach would like to see the WIAA step in and force another conference's hand in allowing the Packerland into a new conference. The 2007-2008 season will be remembered as one where the Packerland Conference was left in the dark. It is unfortunate because a lot of hard working, determined and superb athletes compete in Packerland Conference wrestling.

Packers Sign QB Nall
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
December 2, 2007

The Green Bay Packers have signed quarterback Craig Nall and released safety Marviel Underwood. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, made the announcement Saturday.
Nall, originally a fifth-round pick by Green Bay in 2002, spent four seasons (2002-05) with the Packers. A 6-foot-3, 230-pound player, played with the Buffalo Bills in 2006 and has spent time with the Bills and Houston Texans in 2007. He will wear number 16.
The move comes after Brett Favre separated his left shoulder and severely bruised the forearm area around the ulnar nerve in his right arm. Aaron Rodgers filled in for Favre in the 2006 season and broke his foot in the first series of play. Rodgers finished that game against the Patriots last year, however, he is not known for great durability.
The pickup is a natural fit for Nall and the Packers. He knows the base sets for the offense and terminology that the green and gold use. There will be a much shorter learning curve with Nall in comparison to signing a player with no experience in Packers camp.

Southern Door Wins Rivalry Game
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
December 1, 2007

The Packerland Conference opener in varsity boys basketball between Southern Door and Sturgeon Bay was an entertaining match up. The Eagles, playing without senior Derik Hawkey because of a code violation, got out to an early lead and held on for the win. The Clippers fell behind early but erased a ten point deficit with 1:30 left in the second quarter. The one point lead for the Eagles would expand into as many as 14 on the way to a 47-40 victory.
Southern Door was led by Michael Blizel with 18, Derek Taussel with 16 and Jared Spude with nine points.
The Clippers were led in scoring by sophomore Tanner Dvorak with 11 points. Nick Scaturo scored nine, Nate Felhofer added five and Simon Rabas finished with six. Sturgeon Bay will play a non-conference game Tuesday night against Luxemburg-Casco. The game will be simulcast on 96.7 FM and 104.1 FM.

Quick Start To Boys Basketball Season
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
December 1, 2007

Packerland Conference play opened last night in Kewaunee with a 48-45 win for Oconto. The Kewaunee squad had a short turn around from their run to the state football playoffs and looked a little rusty to begin play. The Blue Devils moved to (2-0 overall, 1-0 in conference) and nearly gave up a 10-point fourth quarter lead.
Kewaunee's Achilles heel was their inability to make east shots. They managed to shoot 17-of-57 from the floor. Charlie Olson led Oconto with 15 points, and Antowan Epps and Logan Ellman added nine. Mark LaTour led Kewaunee with 12 points, while Tyler Thompson added 11.

Algoma began the conference season with a convincing win over NEW Lutheran 50-35. The Wolves are looking to recapture a Packerland Conference Small Division Championship. Eric Ackerman led the way with 13 points and Brett Beckmann did the dirty work with 11 rebounds. The win puts Algoma at (1-0 in conference and 1-1 overall).

It took overtime to decide the game between Sevastopol and Gibraltar. The 61-58 final featured a Cam Fuller free throw in the closing seconds to propel the Pioneers to victory. It was a great game and nearly went into a double overtime period. Fuller finished with 17 to lead Sevastopol. Gibraltar's Alex Larsen has 15 points and Dusty Johnson scored 14.
