Clippers Looking To Play Spoiler
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
October 12, 2007

The Sturgeon Bay football team has less rushing yards as a team than Mishicot quarterback Aaron Kobes has himself. The Clippers will take on the (2-3) Mishicot squad that relies on its running game to take teams out of the ball game by controlling the clock.
The game will be broadcast on 104.1 FM WRLU. Our pre-game coverage will begin at 6:30 with both coaches talking about the contest. Gary Rabach will also break down Sunday's Packers vs. Redsking game. His son Casey will be playing at Lambeau Field for the second time in his career as the starting center for Washington.
Sturgeon Bay has a chance to play spoiler tonight. They could erase Mishicot's chances of playing in the post season. The game will kickoff at 7:00 p.m.

Guide To Beating The Packer - Cover Two Defense
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
October 11, 2007

The Chicago Bears had no answer for the Packers passing attack playing their base defense filled with blitzes, according to Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher. After the game on
Sunday, the middle linebacker paid his respects to Brett Favre and said it is impossible to  trick him with disguised blitz packages. That is why the Bears sat in a cover two defense the entire second half.
The recipe to stop Green Bay's offense was laid out by the Bears. Let the four defensive linemen get moderate pressure on the quarterback, dare them to run and take away the quick slants with shallow safety help. Urlacher talked about Chicago's success on Sunday.
(Audio Here)
Outside linebacker Lance Briggs led the Bears defensively with 16 tackles. Briggs is the unsung hero for Chicago. He takes on two or three blockers on many plays to open up lanes for Brian Urlacher to run to the ball. Both linebackers stuffed Green Bay's run attack in the second half.
Packers’ rookie Dehawn Wynn played a big role in the 100+ yard first half running attack. He said that is just a glimpse of what their running game can accomplish.
(Audio Here)
Green Bay needs to establish the running game as the seasons change. Playing in winter at Lambeau without a running game is a recipe for a miserable November and December. They have the rest of October to prepare for harsh weather.
Holding on to the ball will not get any easier. Fumbling has been an issue for the last two games for the Packers. Rookie inexperience is no excuse for not carrying the ball in your outside arm and placing that second hand over the ball.
Green Bay hosts Sturgeon Bay alum Casey Rabach and the Washington Redskins Sunday at noon. You can listen to the game on 104.1 FM WRLU and 105.1 FM WSBW. Pre-game coverage begins at 11:00 a.m.

By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
October 9, 2007

Last night on the Sports Page on 104.1 FM WRLU, I had the opportunity to talk with President/Owner of the Green Bay Bullfrogs baseball team Jeff Royle. The team recently finished their inaugural season. Met with many challenges, Royal and the Bullfrogs had a phenomenal first season. The franchise averaged over 1,000 people in attendance all season and registered the most merchandise sales in the Northwoods League.
The team finished the season 42-25. Along the way, they set a Northwoods League record, 15 consecutive wins. Royle talked about the impressive start.
(Audio Here)
The team recently announced that Manager Elliott Strankman will return for the 2008 season. He was named Northwoods League Field Manager of the Year. Strankman managed thirty young men in large part from the West Coast.
The league is made up of players with at least one year of college eligibility left. The athletes use the league as a way to be noticed by Major League Scouts in the summer. Jeff Royal said they are apart of the most highly regarded summer baseball league in the nation.
(Audio Here)
Opening Day 2008 is just under 240 days away for the Bullfrogs. The team is looking to build a fan base in Northeast Wisconsin. For more information about the team or tickets visit www.greenbaybullfrogs.com.

Packers Fall To Bears
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
October 8, 2007

The Green Bay Packers had a chance to take a commanding lead in the NFC North Division last night with a win over the Bears. Instead, after 341 first-half yards and building a 17-7 lead, Green Bay was dealt their first loss of the season by the Chicago Bears 27-20. Two first half fumbles by rookie wide receiver James Jones was the difference between a 17-7 first half lead and a 31-7 first half lead.
Brett Favre was on top of his game throughout the first half. He finished with a 29-of-40 performance through the air and 322 yards. While the loss stings, the yardage keeps him on track of topping Dan Marino's NFL passing yardage record. Favre did pass another milestone last night. Unfortunately, it was George Blanda's all-time interception mark. It fell on the last play of the game, when cornerback Danieal Manning out jumped Donald Driver for a hail marry pass. It was Manning's first interception of the season and will be remembered for a long time by statisticians. He talked about record-breaking interception after the game.

The Packers elected to keep the ball away from return man Devin Hester whenever possible. He had little impact on the game besides the fact that the Bears started every drive around the 35 yard line. Hester said a win against the Packers is all that matters to the Chicago franchise.

The Packers racked up a staggering 93 penalty yards, with 64 coming in the second half. An injury to center Scott Wells made a huge difference in the running and passing games. A hodgepodge offensive line was beaten repeatedly in the second half. Packers’ tight end Bubba Franks said a loss stings.

Green Bay will host the Washington Redskins on Sunday. Sturgeon Bay alum Casey Rabach will be back in his home state leading the Redskins offensive line. Washington is coming off a lopsided win over the Detroit Lions and has just one loss on the season.

The Rivalry Continues Tonight - Packers vs. Bears
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
October 7, 2007

The NFL’s most storied rivalry enjoys its 174th installment tonight at historic Lambeau Field. It is the 248th consecutive sellout at the league’s longest-tenured stadium. The Packers enter the contest at 4-0, their best start since 1998, while the Bears come into the game at 1-3.
Last Sunday’s win at Minnesota was highlighted by one of the greatest records in professional football history as Brett Favre surpassed Dan Marino’s NFL record for career touchdown passes. Favre hit Greg Jennings on a 16-yard slant with 4:56 remaining in the first quarter for his 421st career touchdown pass, breaking one of the league’s most hallowed records. Earlier this season, Favre surpassed John Elway to become the winningest quarterback (now 151 wins) in NFL history.
Also in last week's game Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila broke the franchise sack record. He surpassed Reggie White on the list with his 69th sack while wearing the green and gold.
Only defending Super Bowl champion Indianapolis (nine) enters play this weekend with a longer winning streak than Green Bay (eight). Green Bay has gotten off to a 4-0 start for the ninth time in team history. Seven of those Packers teams went on to win an NFL championship (1929, ’30, ’31, ’44, ’62, ’65, and 1966).
The Packers and Bears will kickoff tonight on the radio stations of DoorCountyDailyNews.com, 104.1 FM WRLU and 105.1 FM WSBW. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:00 p.m. The kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

West De Pere Tops L-C
By Mike Kollmansberger DoorCountyDailyNews.com
October 6, 2007

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans (1-5, 1-6 overall) took the opening drive down the field and set up a 25 yard field goal that Kyle Buresh nailed to give the Spartans a 3-0 midway through the first quarter.  It was all West De Pere Phantoms (5-1, 6-1 overall) after that. Phantoms senior quarterback Garrett Scray scored four touchdowns (2 rushing, 2 passing) in the first half and led his Phantoms to a 49-3 drubbing of the Spartans in Bay Conference action Friday night at Luxemburg-Casco High School.  The loss, the Spartans fourth straight, officially eliminated them from post season considerations.  The win for West De Pere puts them in a tie with New London for second place in the conference, a game back of Denmark.  The Vikings remained unbeaten in the conference Friday as they got by Hortonville 13-7 in overtime.  New London beat Lakeland 35-21 in a non-conference match up. West De Pere senior running back Sam Gavic added two more touchdown runs in the second half and led the Phantoms ground attack with 159 yards on 15 carries.  Scray added 140 yards on just 6 rushes with the two scores.  The Phantom ground game out-gained the Spartans 363-42.  L-C will hit the road next Friday night as they travel to Oconto Falls for a 7p.m. kickoff with the pre game show beginning at 6:45 p.m. on 96.7FM WBDK.
