Luxemburg-Casco
Earns First Win Of The Season By Mike Kollmansberger DoorCountyDailyNews.com September 8, 2007 The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans used a dominating ground attack and a suffocating defense to earn their first win of the season 27-0 against the Shawano Hawks Friday night at Luxemburg-Casco High School. The Spartans out gained the Hawks on the ground 308
to –5, led by senior Nick Lloyd, who had 113 yards on 18 carries
including a 15-yard touchdown early in the second quarter to get
L-C the early 7-0 lead. L-C added another score right before
the half on a 46 yard pass from senior Jason Jandrin to fellow
senior Justin Zellner that ended very strangely with Zellner
fumbling just before crossing the goal line without being
touched but luckily recovering the ball away from two Hawk
defenders. Ryan Zellner added 41 yards on 16 carries and scored
on a 2-yard touchdown run with just under 10 minutes left in the
game. The defense then put the game away 16 seconds later on a
27 yard interception return for a touchdown by senior Eric Gale,
who had two interceptions on the evening. L-C head coach Pete
Kline was very happy with the play of Gale. (Audio Here) The win was the first for Luxemburg-Casco as a member of the Bay Conference and gives the Spartans some much needed confidence for Coach Kline’s team going ahead. (Audio Here) The Spartans are back on the road next week to face a tough New London opponent. The broadcast begins at 6:45 on 96.7FM WBDK. |

Luxemburg-Casco returns home Friday night to face Bay Conference
opponent Shawano at 6:45 on 96.7FM WBDK. The Hawks are 0-2 overall
and in conference play this season, losing last week to Marinette
35-6 and suffering a tough loss in the season opener to Oconto Falls
22-21 in overtime. The Spartans are also 0-2 overall, 0-1 in
conference losing last week at Hortonville 21-6. L-C was able to
move the ball on the Polar Bears, but couldn't find the end zone.
Penalties and turnovers were the main reasons why the Spartans ended
up with only six points for head coach Pete Kline. |

The
Packer Experience Editorial Comment By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com September 5, 2007 The DoorCountyDailyNews.com sports point and counterpoint on Packers Training Camp concludes today with my perspective on why training camp in Green Bay is the best. Yesterday, you heard from a Chicago Bears fan, Karen Klement, about how impressive training camp at Clarke Hinkle Field is from an outsiders perspective. I was born and raised in the great state of Wisconsin and by the time I was able to walk, I was wearing my first mini-Packer jersey. For Halloween, I would dress up as Sterling Sharpe with a plastic helmet and knee high white socks. My mom, dad, little brother, grandma and I were at training camp every year. The adults would take off from work for an entire day and we would get to Lambeau Field extra early. As rabid sports memorabilia collectors and football card experts, my brother Adam, Grandma and I would manage to get 40-50 signatures a day. Yes, my grandma was HUGE into collecting the autographs with us! Our family would save front row positioning around the old Packer practice facilities. Cheering, hooting and hollering for Tim Harris, Don Majkowski, Ed West, Chuck Cecil and Chris Jackie, practice was super exciting. We would not be one of the kids that brought our bicycles for the players to ride to and from the stadium, but we wished we had. Most players would take the time to stop sign our special white autograph football certified by the NFL. Grandma wouldn't allow us to have the uncertified ball because of her favorite line, "If you take care of it, it will be a collector’s item some day!" One year in the early 1990's the Packers opened up Lambeau and had two players standing at the end of every section tunnel. Brett Favre and Mark Brunell were teamed up together, Edgar Bennett and Leshawn Johnson at another gate, Reggie White and John Jurkovich at another. The lines would be terribly long, but since I was three and a half feet shorter and 180 pound lighter than my current 6'5" 260-pound build I could squeeze through any line and cut 45 minutes off a wait. Those are some of my happiest childhood memories. Our only bad run in with a player or coach came with the steroid using mega man from Michigan State University, Tony Mandarich. After practice, little boys and girls seeking his signature surrounded Tony. He actually took 10 minutes to sign every little fan's item. For some reason, he did not see me or did not care to sign my ball and jumped into his monster truck. Looking back, that was not a good idea for Mr. Mandarich. My mom decided that was not acceptable and starting begging him to sign just one more autograph. He would not oblige and that would be the first time I heard my mom swear. She went into the, “how many millions of dollars do you make, and you can’t sign one more football.” He replied that he wasn’t paid to sign little brat’s sports gear. That did it, and her response was not radio appropriate. Needless to say, we never cheered for him. The training camp memories will stick with me for a lifetime. Walking and talking with Brett Favre, catching a pass form quarterback Anthony Dilweg, eating ice cream at Dairy Queen with Bryce Paup those are some of my greatest memories. It did not stop at training camp for our family, grandma and grandpa included. We would watch the games together and then start the workweek with a weekly trip from Appleton to Green Bay for the Monday night Packers T.V. program "Larry McCarran Live." I guess the Freimuth family classifies as "die hard fans." Win or lose we have a lot to be thankful for. This great team with such strong community ties is unique in the NFL It has come full circle for me. Since I was five years old, I knew I wanted to cover the Green Bay Packers on T.V. or radio. I have been with the radio stations of DoorCountyDailyNews.com for nearly two and a half years and haven’t missed a home game since. In the locker room, on the field, interviewing the players I idolized while growing up in Northeast Wisconsin. Not a bad deal! We want to hear your Packer Training Camp Stories! Packers Growing Loyal Fans Editorial Comment By Karen Klement DoorCountyDailyNews.com September 4, 2007 The Packers really know how to grow loyal fans. As training camp ends and the Green Bay Packers season gets underway, I can't help but think about all the kids (and adults) who will go to bed every night dreaming about their favorite team and players. First, and regardless of all the heat I'm going to take for this, I have to admit that, at heart, I am a Chicago Bears
fan. But what the Packers do for their fans is truly unlike an other
team in the NFL. While my female characteristics may take over when it comes to this, I get goose bumps and teary-eyed every time I see a big Packers player riding some kid's little bike to or from Don Hutson Field for practice. What an amazing experience for those kids! Those are memories the adoring young fans will keep forever. If a Bears player rode my bike after practice when I was a kid, I'd probably still be riding it today. In fact, I'll bet training camp is where most kids figure out who their favorite players are, based on their experience there. Chances are, those youngsters will keep an eye on that player for their entire career. If I wanted to check out Bears training camp, I'd had to travel about an hour south of Soldier Field just to see how my team was preparing for the season. Packer fans must only head down Oneida Street to see favorites like Brett Favre, Donald Driver and A.J. Hawk. In fact, the Packers even provide bleachers and port-o-potties for their loyal fans. Aside from that, young fans can enjoy the Packer Experience and inflatables that are set up around Lambeau Field during training camp. Let's not forget Family Night, when the
Packers open Lambeau Field to their adoring fans for a scrimmage.
Then in the off-season, there's Fan Fest. The three-day festival is
an event that truly utilizes the Packers facility to its full
potential. At the fest, fans line up to get autographs and photos
from Packer players, listen to and watch players and coaches being
interviewed on the main stage and check out merchandise from Packers
vendors. How much more up-close-and-personal can you get?All this in one season and it's no wonder Packer fans are so obsessed with their beloved team. Tail gaters set up early for Sundays games and the sea of green & gold both inside and surrounding Lambeau means this is nothing new for Packer fans; it's tradition. The Packers haven't been Superbowl Champs for over a decade now, but that doesn't seem to bother the fans, they still bleed green and gold. It seems a Packer fan's passion and love for their team seems to grow with every season, whether they're winning or finish (4-12). What's your favorite Packers memory? I want to hear about it. Braves Earn
County League Championship By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com September 3, 2007
The Door County Baseball League Championship was a crowd pleaser
with 19 runs scored. Kolberg was the regular season champion and
they earned the right to host yesterday's game. The shaughnessy
playoff final ended 11-8, as Kolberg's bats were too much for West
Jacksonport. The battle was between 12 and 2 Kolberg and 11 and 3
West Jacksonport. The squads split their regular season games, so
this cleared up any questions of who the real champion was this
summer. |
