Turnovers Cost L-C Season Opener
By Mike Kollmansberger DoorCountyDailyNews.com
September 1, 2007

Two pass plays of 15 and 50 yards from quarterback Garrett Hoewisch to Griffin Korth and an 85 yard interception return for a touchdown by Travis Parker gave the
Hortonville Polar Bears their first victory of the season 21-6 over the Luxemburg-Casco Spartans Friday night in Hortonville.
The game started very well for the Spartans with the offense staying on the field for much of the first quarter.  L-C scored first on a 26 yard run by quarterback Jason Jandrin with 5:57 left in the first quarter.  The Polar Bears couldn't get much going offensively as the Spartans defense looked dominate early on as well.  L-C was driving for what appeared to be their second score of the evening early in the second quarter when the complexion of game totally changed.  Jandrin's pass intended for Justin Zellner was picked off by Parker who returned the ball 85 yards untouched for the score and instead of the Spartans adding to their lead, they found themselves trailing 7-6 with 8:50 left in the first half.
Things just never got back on track for L-C the rest of the night. They were able to move the ball but could not find the end zone and the defense started giving up some big plays as the Hortonville offense began moving the ball.  The Spartans did out gain the Polar Bears 312 to 225, led by Ryan Zellner who had 119 yards on 17 carries.  Nick Lloyd added 44 yards on 12 carries and Jason Jandrin had 13 carries for 39 and was 6 of 13 passing for 98 yards with two interceptions.  L-C had three turnovers total as they also lost a fumble.  Hortonville was turnover free on the night and had a good rushing performance from Charlie Koeppl who gained 84 yards on 22 carries.  Garrett Hoewisch was only 5 for 15 passing with 91 yards but two of his completions were for touchdowns.  The recipient of those scores was Griffin Korth who had three receptions for 91 yards on the evening.
The Spartans return home next week as they host Shawano beginning at 7pm.  That game can be heard on 96.7FM WBDK beginning with the pregame show at 6:45 from Spartan Stadium in Luxemburg.

Defense has played well for L-C, just giving up the one score so far this season, but they will have to avoid giving up the big plays against a Polar Bear team that likes to throw the ball a little more often than most teams the Spartans will face.

The End Is Near For Door County Baseball League
By Jocko Rader DoorCountyDailyNews.com
August 31, 2007

The Door County Baseball League's final game will be this Sunday to wrap up the 2007 season.  It is the famous shaughnessy playoff final between Kolberg and West Jacksonport at Kolberg. The battle is between 12 and  2 Kolberg and 11 and 3 West Jacksonport.  they split their regular season games, so this should be a dandy.  Weather looks great.  Kolberg has won the playoff crown only three times since l974, in 95 and 96 and then in
2002. West Jacksonport has only won it twice since l974 and that was in l987 and then 2003.  Maplewood won it the last three years, but are gone from the seen this year.  The Mets however since l974 have won the crown l0 times and Sister Bay is next with 9 titles.  That gives you a little of the history of the traveling trophy hunt, which was donated by Fritz Wodlt family in 74'. Added a few years ago was another one in honor of Jeff Dejardin.  Coming into the game we have four hitters on each team batting over .300.  Jacksonport has leading hitter in Steve Jilot, Ryan Tanck, Stuart Larsen and Dave Jilot.  For Kolberg we have Greg Klaubauf, Bob Tenor, Travis Leroy and Chris Wery.  So both teams have outstanding hitting, so now we look at the pitching and we have Adam Bretl
against, it looks like young Joel Delorit.  However I have a hunch Ryan Tanck if healthy will take the mound in this one.  They won last week without his bat, but it will  be much needed this week against Bretl.  As I said the weather should be good and I look for a big crowd to be on hand to see the season's final game. President Terry Miller will be on hand to hand out the year end trophy's, top pitcher, top batter and top manager plus last years winners Dave Jilot and Jack Schartner are to be on hand to pick up their permanent trophy and hand in their traveling  ones they took home last year.  Both pitcher and batter traveling trophy's donated by Stoneman-Schopf Insurance, many years ago.  They have been in quite a few homes in the last 40 years.  Oh by the way, my pick will be Kolberg to take it all in 2007, but in a one run game.  See you there. This is my final article for this season, hoped you enjoyed a little insight each week from me.  It was a pleasure bringing it to you. Jocko Rader reporting for doorcountydailynews.com.

The Green Bay Packers placed fullback Ryan Powdrell on injured reserve with a knee injury yesterday. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, made the announcement.
Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent from Southern California, Powdrell appeared in two preseason games. With the move, the team has met the NFL mandated roster reduction. The Packers needed to de down to 75 players today and by placing Powdrell on IR they have met the requirement.
