The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans lost their season opener to the Sheboygan Falls Falcons by the score of 7-3 at Spartan Stadium on Friday night.  The game was dominated by very strong defenses for both teams with the first score of the game not coming until late in first
half on a Kyle Buresh 20-yard field goal which gave the Spartans a 3-0 halftime lead.  L-C held the lead until midway through the fourth quarter when Falcons quarterback Jay Pribek connected with Eric Kluz on a long pass play that put Sheboygan Falls down to the 10-yard line.  After a procedure penalty, Pribek ran the ball 15 yards for the touchdown which turned out to be the winning score.  Neither team could produce much offense with Sheboygan Falls out gaining the Spartans 218-148.  Tim Burhop led the Falcons on the ground with 73 yards on 19 carries, while Pribek ended his night completing 9 passes on 17 attempts for 97 yards and the lone touchdown run.  Luxemburg-Casco was led by Jason Jandrin who had 47 yards on 11 rushes and Ryan Zellner's 21 yards on 12 carries.  Despite the loss, Spartan Head Coach Pete Kline was pleased with the teams tenacity throughout the contest.

Coach Kline and the rest of the Spartans travel to Hortonville next Friday night to open Bay Conference action against the Polar Bears.  The broadcast of next week's game can be heard Friday beginning at 6:45 on 96.7 FM WBDK.

Cubs Defeat A's For Playoff Spot
By Jocko Rader DoorCountyDailyNews.com
August 24, 2007

The Institute Cubs turned four double plays into a victory over the Baileys Harbor A's last Sunday at Baileys Harbor.  They won the game 10-3 to claim the last spot in the playoff

of the Door County Baseball League in 2007.  Joe Hoffman had a three run home run to get them off to a good start and had 4 RBI's in the game.  Steve Wipperfurth the veteran catcher had scored four times before the dust had settled and Corey Fuller had three hits in the game to lead the offense. Kit Schatner was in some trouble in a few innings  but the double play ball took him right out of it.  Hartel started for the A's followed by a host of pitchers but no one could stop the Institute express in this game.  It was a bittersweet end to the A's season as they started out 6 and 1 and them went 1 and 7. Without Anschutz on the mound, who had arm problems through out the year, they need a pitcher for 2008 to say the least.
Now on to the playoffs, as the Cubs will go to Kolberg and take on the league champs the Kolberg Braves.  This will  be no easy task, as .400 hitter Greg Klabaugh and team are waiting to win the playoffs also this year.  Manager of The Year Dave Neinas will have his
team ready for kit and crew.  I will go with the Braves to win at home in this one. The next
game has second place West Jacksonport against the Maplewood Mets, who finished third in the league. These teams have had quite the battle over the last five years in the playoffs. Maplewood has won the event in the last three years and each team I pick up the trophy, Delores brown says "you will be bringing it back in a couple of weeks."  So far she has been right, but I believe the Ports will win this game and set up a super duper match next week at Kolberg.  Too much hitting for the Mets to handle in this one and with potential pitcher of the year in Adam Bretl it will be lights out for the Mets.  However they are awful tough in the playoffs as they seem to  have a second gear here.
Top five hitters in the dcbl  this year, we have Steve Jilot at .491. matt ash at .,407 and Greg Klaubauf at .400 as the only men over .400. Rounding out the top ten we have Matt Foss at.393 and Mickey Lee at.387, with Bob Tenor and Jeff Sperber at.386, Stuart Larsen at.380 Cody Bauer at .378 and Ryan Tanck at .368  we had 24 hitters over .300 this year.  Top pitchers records, Ryan Tanck (5-1)  and Adam Bretl (5-2). For innings pitched it was Jeff Sperber with 85.1 and Brett Anschutz lead the league in K's with 69. Sperber and Jake Junion had five home runs. Steve Jilot with 24 RBI's and Steve Jilot and Dave Jilot with 22 runs scored. All in all the league had a very fine year in 2007.  Terry Miller is president of the league.

Pack Falls To Jags
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com

The Green Bay Packers entered into a slugfest with Jacksonville last night in a preseason game. Sturgeon Bay native Nick Greisen played the majority of the second half in the Jaguar’s line-backing core. Greisen is listed as the number two  middle linebacker on the depth chart, but also spent some time playing the SAM or strong side linebacker.

Members of the Jacksonville commented at Lambeau last night that Nick is in an uphill battle for a roster spot especially after the
franchise chose a linebacker in the second round of this year’s
draft. However, Jacksonville Head Coach Jack Del Rio was an all-pro linebacker during his playing days and appreciates the work ethic, positive attitude and experience that Greisen brings to the table.

The Jaguars won the match up 21-13. Green Bay awaits a medical examination on Pro Bowl wide receiver Donald Driver who injured his foot in the first half and was carted off the field.

Greisen Up To The Challenge Tonight
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
August 23, 2007

Sturgeon Bay graduate Nick Greisen will take to Lambeau Field tonight with the Jacksonville Jaguars in a match up with the (2-0) Packers. The game will be broadcast on 104.1 FM WRLU and 105.1 FM WSBW. Jacksonville and Green Bay will meet for the second time in the preseason, with the Jaguars edging the Packers, 9-7, on Aug. 27, 2004, in the first meeting at Alltel Stadium. The Packers and Jaguars have met only three times in the regular season since Jacksonville’s inception in 1995. The Packers won the first two meetings in 1995 and 2001, while the Jaguars won the most recent contest in 2004.
Neither team has been victorious at home during the series. Green Bay won the first two games in Jacksonville, 24-14, Sept. 24, 1995, and, 28-21, Dec. 3, 2001. The ’95 victory gave Green Bay sole possession of first place in the NFC Central for the first time in 17 years. The Jaguars won in their only appearance in Lambeau Field, 28-25, Dec. 19, 2004.
This is not the first time Greisen has donned the competitor’s colors while playing at Lambeau. Growing up a die-hard Packer fan, Nick Greisen is thrilled to play in his home state. He talked about the expected Sturgeon Bay faithful and how much it means to have hometown support.

Greisen said he arranged for 19 tickets for family. He knows a number of friends and other community members purchased tickets on line or through the ticket office. He said his mom took care of ticket requests this time around.

The middle linebacker is in a battle for a backup spot. He has been fortunate to keep a relatively clean bill of health throughout the pre-season. The Packers and Jaguars will kickoff tonight at 7:00 p.m. The only stations in Door and Kewaunee Counties to broadcast Packers football are 104.1 FM WRLU and 105.1 FM WSBW.

He went two innings, gave up zero runs and no hits, walked two and struck out two. After coming off the mound, Delorit took first base in the eighth and ninth innings. Schartner and Delorit played extremely well and managed to contribute to a winning effort.

Cobb Bolsters Backfield
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
August 21, 2007

The Green Bay Packers signed fullback Erryn Cobb, a rookie free agent from Northwestern, and released safety Marviel Underwood. One of the Packers’ fourth-round picks in the 2005 NFL Draft, Underwood played in 16 career games for Green Bay. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, made the announcement this morning.
Cobb, a four-year letterwinner and team co-captain in 2006, played in 49 career games for the Wildcats. He began his career in 2003 as a linebacker before moving to fullback in 2004. Cobb was the team’s starting tight end in 2005 and played ‘superback’, a combination of tight end and fullback, as a senior in 2006. The undrafted rookie will look to ease the burden in the thin list of players in the backfield. Green Bay has struggled with injuries and Saturday's preseason game against Seattle magnified the issue. The 6-foot-1, 241-pound player also blocked two punts in 2006. He will wear No. 25.
Because of knee injuries to Vernand Morency, P.J. Pope and Ryan Powdrell the running game has been unstable. Starting fullback Brandon Miree did not play in the second consecutive preseason game because of a stinger experienced early against the Steelers. Rookie Deshawn Wynn has been sidelined because of a quadricep injury as well. The Packers play the Jacksonville Jaguars tomorrow night. The game can be heard on 104.1 FM WRLU and 105.1 FM WSBW.

Greisen To Play Against Packers Thursday - Tickets Available
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
August 21, 2007

Sturgeon Bay High School alumni Nick Greisen will play at Lambeau Field this week in week three of the NFL preseason. Tickets are available for Thursday night’s Bishop’s Charities game featuring the Green Bay Packers vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Packers announced yesterday.
According to Mark Wagner, the Packers’ director of ticket operations, the Bishop’s Charities Committee returned a few hundred tickets to the Packers.
The available tickets are $72, $64 and $59 each. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Packers’ ticket office at Lambeau Field (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) or by telephone at (920)569-7501.
Wagner also asked fans to pay special attention to the right end of the ticket with the perforated portion containing the section, row and seat number. That portion of the ticket needs to stay intact; it is torn off as the fans pass through the turnstile. A few instances occurred last Thursday with fans arriving at the gates with that specific portion of the ticket missing.

A quick reminder to all fans that umbrellas are prohibited in the stadium. With the chance of rain in Thursday evening’s forecast, Packers fans will have to leave umbrellas in their vehicles. Umbrellas are prohibited because they are impractical in the seating area of the stadium, especially with regard to obstructing views and safety considerations of all fans. Fans should note that any items left at the gate will not be able to be picked up after the game.
Rain suits, ponchos and other types of rain gear are recommended for use during wet conditions.

Locals Finish Well In Sturgeon Bay Offshore Challenge
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
August 20, 2007

The Sturgeon Bay Offshore Challenge featured two local boats in the top three finishers this weekend. The "Blue Fairways" vessel out of Michigan surged on the last day and took the lead from "Hooked Up." DoorCountyDailyNews.com fishing report announcer Gary Nault was aboard "Hooked Up" and said they had 12 fish get off on Sunday. They only managed to weigh eight of the ten allowed fish.
"Blue Fairways" finished the two-day tournament with a total weight of 203.85 pounds. The big thing that catapulted the Michigan team into first place was weighing the maximum ten fish per day. In second place was "The Gremlin" with a total weight of 195.05 pounds. "Hooked Up" finished in third place with an overall weight on 18 fish of 185.40 pounds.
The big fish of the tournament weighed only 17.95 pounds. It was reeled in on Saturday aboard last year's winner "Prolific Proline." The Sturgeon Bay Offshore Challenge also featured a competition looking for the three biggest salmon. "Pier Pressure" from Sturgeon Bay won the 3,3,3 Challenge as well.

Packers Crush Seahawks
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
August 19, 2007

The pre-season home opener for the Green Bay Packers ended in a 48-13 thrashing of the Seattle Seahawks. The first team offense and defense looked far better than their performance a week ago in Pittsburgh. Brett Favre connected with James Jones in the first quarter to account for the starting quarterback’s first touchdown throw of the season.
The defense was the real story of the evening, however. The Seahawks turned the ball over six times and the Packers defense managed to score two touchdowns off the errors. Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy said the defense came to play and impressed the coaching staff.
(Audio Here)
Seattle Seahawks Head Coach and former Super Bowl winning Packers Head Coach Mike Holmgren was disgusted with his team’s performance. He said coming back to Green Bay is still special on all levels.
(Audio Here)
The Packers will host the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night. Sturgeon Bay graduate Nick Greisen will make an appearance at Lambeau Field in the middle of a battle for starting weak side linebacker. The Packers third preseason game can be heard on 104.1 FM and 105.1 FM Thursday night.
