Race Is On In Door
County Baseball League
By Jocko Rader DoorCountyDailyNews.com
August 10, 2007We head
into the final week and we still have a race going on for first
place and a race in the making for the final other two playoff
berths. The first four teams in the standings have a playoff at
the end of the season, with the first and second place teams
getting the home field. Teams split the gate but the stand
profit goes to the home team. In the final game, teams split
everything two ways and the league gets lo per-cent of the
gate.
Kolberg is on a big winning streak and trying to hold off West
Jacksonport for one more week. They both are at home this week
with Egg Harbor coming to Kolberg and Institute going to West
Jacksonport. Jacksonport is looking for pay back on the Cubs as
they were
shut out 5 to zip in the first game. Steve Jilot is on a tear
this year and leading the league in hitting at .469 and that was
before we get to figure his four hits from last week. Ryan
Tanck over .300 as is Stuart Larsen and Dave Jilot, now you add
Joel Deloirt to this lineup and you have one mean hitting
machine in the Ports. The Cubs have one player over.300 and
young Kit Schartner on the mound doing a good job. I doubt if
he can hold off the Ports in this one. Ports to win big and the
Cubs to have to play for fourth place in a playoff game to get
into the playoffs. Kolberg is hosting Egg Harbor and also has
some fellows hitting the ball. Greg Klaubagh in third place in
the batting race at.437. Travis Leroy over.300 as is Chris Wery.
But a guy who really came on strong this year is Bob Tenor who
is around.424 and the MVP of the All Star game. Put Wery in
there with the Rays and you have a tough outfit to beat, to say
nothing of the outstanding pitcher in Adam Brelt. Talking about
pitching, that is a tough one to figure out this year, for the
top pitcher
award given out. Bretl has not been in enough games to qualify
but who has? Jeff Sperber and Kit Schartner are about the only
two that have gone over 10 games. Glad its up to the managers to
make this pick and not me. Pick in this is Kolberg and with
that they win back to back championships under the leadership of
Dave Nienas. If they win, trophies will be handed out after the
game by Jocko Rader and Sec-Trea and president Terry Milller.
Another big game this week at Baileys Harbor with Maplewood
coming to town. The team that wins this one is in third place
and the team that loses is in the playoff for four place. If
Maplewood does lose, they would play Institute at home, as they
won both games against the Cubs. Baileys Harbor team had a
outstanding first half and just the opposite in the second half.
They have won one game and only one more left. Pitching
has been a big problem after Anschutz came up with a sore arm.
Haertel tied to help out and has some good games but not enough
of them. They even got Jodi Viste out of retirement to fix the
spinning wheel, but that has not helped either. It is hard to
pick Maplewood, as they seem to have a ton of errors each week.
They have a lot of leaks on defense and that puts Sperber facing
to many batters each week. My pick with tongue in cheek with be
the Mets but I would not bet on it. That means the Cubs vs. A's
for the final playoff berth. Last game to mention is Sister Bay
at Washington Island and the Islanders are still trying to
figure out what happened at Maplewoood Sunday. They had a two
run lead in the ninth and tenth and blew both leads. I think
they took Mark Woerfel out to soon but that's my opinion on
this. An outstanding play by Kyle Thayse saved the day for
Maplewood, as he threw Caleb Cornell out at the plate in a great
play on a hard hit ball to right with Cornell on second a really
coming hard, as they kid can run, only to get nailed at home for
a big third out. Sister Bay continues to have trouble on the
mound and this will not end Sunday as what I see of the island
team, they have some good sticks. Atkins, Ash, Foss,
Gunnlaugsson and crew can put some hurt on you. Ash in second
in batting at.457. Atkins moving up fast. Foss very steady and
a good third baseman on defense. Throw in Mike Jorgenson and
you have a team that, I think is hard to believe, is only 3 and
10. They will win there fourth game at home to close out the
season and look forward to 2008. Sister Bay on the other hand
has to find a pitcher to be improve next year. They have some
good sticks, but must shore up the defense also. Both teams out
of the playoffs and this is something new for the Islanders.

Legion Baseball
Season In The Books
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
August 9, 2007
The legion baseball season ended for Door County teams last week.
The Sturgeon Bay Bays finished the season at .500 and made major
improvements throughout the summer. Manager George Husby joined me
on the sports page on 104.1 FM Monday night. Husby was impressed by
his team's comradery.
The Bays pull students from Sturgeon Bay and Southern Door High
Schools and the kids gelled from the beginning. Husby said the club
exceeded expectations.
(Audio Here)
Michael Blizel led the team in batting with a .489 average. Joel
Delorit managed .486 in conference. The Southern Door valedictorian,
Delorit, was awarded the pitcher of the year in the conference. He
will also be playing in the state legion all-star game at Miller
Park August 18.
Husby said the Blizel and Delorit were outstanding but the most
improved player of the summer was a young catcher from Sturgeon Bay.
(Audio Here)
The team finished 16-16-1 and elevated expectations for Legion ball
in the summer of 2008. Husby thanked all the parents and fans for
their support throughout the season. |

Gibraltar Football
Hitting The Weights
By Brian Sonnenberg DoorCountyDailyNews.com
August 7, 2007The Gibraltar football off-season
program has undergone some serious changes the past three summers.
To compete with other larger Packerland Conference schools,
Gibraltar players must commit to an off-season training program.
Gibraltar Assistant Football Coach
Slade Martin initiated the training program changes. Monday,
Wednesday and Friday the players meet in the morning for a workout.
Then, each Tuesday and Thursday evening, Martin works with the
players unable to attend morning sessions. Martin says the low
numbers at Gibraltar mean the players must become even more
dedicated in the weight room.
(Audio Here)
Martin played football three years at Gibraltar but moved to Fort
Myers, Florida his senior season. He played against current NFL
players Jevon Kearse and Edgerrin James during his one year in
Florida. His college career was cut short by a devastating knee
injury. However, his weightlifting background is quite extensive. He
has trained with professional bodybuilders, football players and
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters. Training for MMA fights and
football games are similar. As opposed to brute strength and
aesthetics, Martin prefers to emphasize off-balance, functional
strength.
(Audio Here)
Martin uses logs and truck tires during his unconventional workouts.
This gives the football players the functional, core strength needed
to be effective during a game. Despite the encouraging numbers,
Martin says kids can always eat better to ensure a more productive
weightlifting session. |

Maplewood Takes Win
From Egg Harbor In Close Game
By Karen Klement DoorCountyDailyNews.com
August 6, 2007In the Door County Baseball League
yesterday, Maplewood beat Washington Island, Kolberg defeated Sister
Bay, West Jacksonport beat Egg Harbor and Institute was victorious
over Baileys Harbor.
It seemed to be over for West Jacksonport but then in the ninth
inning, a grand slam by Steve Jilot robbed Egg Harbor of a win. The
final score was 8-7, West Jacksonport over Egg Harbor.
In a nail biter, Maplewood defeated Washington Island 11-10. This
was one of pitchers Mark Woerfel's
last games before his retirement this year and DCBL insider Jocko
Rader reports that he did a great job. Mickey Lee recorded 4 hits
and Matt Sperber had 3. The Islanders Matt Foss had a homerun.
Kolberg defeated Sister Bay 12-2. Jesse Miller and Chris Wery each
recorded homeruns. Adam Bretl was the wining pitcher. The Bays had 4
errors.

Trelka And Statz
Swim To National Success
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
August 5, 2007Two Sturgeon Bay High School students
competed in the YMCA Nationals in College Park, Maryland last week.
Senior Kyle Trelka and sophomore Alexa Statz competed in various
events with the best of the best from throughout the country. Kyle
Trelka swam amazing times all week and set personal records nearly
every time in the pool. He managed a seventh place finish in the 50
backstroke. Trelka said college coaches notice that type of
performance.
(Audio Here)
The first day at the University of Maryland, Trelka competed in the
100 backstroke. He entered the finals with a third seed and finished
in seventh place. Alexa Statz swam in the 50 breaststroke for her
first event. She missed the top 16 by one, one hundredth of a
second.
On Friday, Trelka swam the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:15.54. The
time was good enough for 14th in the nation. Statz swam the 50 fly
and finished in the 40's. Trelka also swam the 50 fly Friday. He
finished in 28th place.
Saturday, Trelka competed in the 50 backstroke and entered the
competition in fourth place. He finished in seventh place overall
with a time of 28.83. The Sturgeon Bay senior said it was a great
way to end the week.
(Audio Here)
Statz and Trelka got a good kick on the competition in Northeast
Wisconsin by competing in the YMCA Nationals. Both swimmers fared
exceptionally well and will be crucial to the success of the
2007-2008 Sturgeon Bay swim teams. |

Packers Family
Night A Major Hit For All Ages
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
August 5, 2007
For the fourth consecutive year, the Packers sold out every
available seat at Lambeau Field for Family Night. Last night, 59,362
fans watched Brett Favre start 9/9 with two touchdowns in the team
period. Favre finished his night in the two-minute drill by throwing
an interception in the red zone. Overall, the Packers looked like a
more confident team than they were one year ago. Coach Mike McCarty
echoed that sentiment and stated that he feels a lot better about
the team this year.
Donald Driver was on the receiving side of one of Brett
Favre's touchdown passes. He said it felt great to compete in front
of a full house.
The kickoff return game was a positive. Rookie receiver David
Clowney returned a kick 102 yards for a touchdown. He said it was an
amazing feeling.
The Packers will continue training camp practice tomorrow and head
to Pittsburg on Sunday for the first pre-season game of the year.
All Green Bay Packer pre season and regular season games can be
heard on 104.1 FM and 105.1 FM. |
