Door County Baseball League Report
By Jocko Rader DoorCountyDailyNews.com
August 3, 2007

The Door County All Star game between the North and South was held Wednesday night at Institute and the south won in 12 innings 7 to 6.  North went ahead 3 to 2 in the first inning, added a run in the third only to see the South score four times in the sixth to take a 6 to 4 lead.  However Craig Gunnlaugsson of Washington Island hit a two run homer in the top of the seventh. That's  the way it stayed till the bottom of the 12 with two outs. Cory Fuller hit a single up the middle, stole second and scored on a line shot to right by Bob Tenor who had come in during the 10th to pitch, as the South was all out of pitchers.  Most pitchers only went one inning or so, as they had just pitched on Sunday and the league did
not want any bad arms for this week's action.
Two weeks left with Kolberg in a one game lead over West Jacksonport.  The race is not over yet with two weeks to go.  However Kolberg will to tough to beat with Adam Bretl on the  mound for them.
Top hitters this week lead by four for four for Bob Tenor of Kolberg.  Scott Price had four hits, Justin Hartel two for Baileys Harbor. Paul Nelson and Charlie Schell two for the Sister Bay team. Jason Shimon and Scott Krueger two for the Mets, Steve Jilot the leading batter now with two for the Ports with Stuart  Larsen.  Two for Joe Hoffman and Jason Annis for the Cubs, and two for Kurt Ray of Kolberg.  Jack Schartner, last year's all everything, had two for Egg Harbor and the Islanders had a field day in hitting last week.  Len Atkins four, Craig Gunnlaugson with three as did Matt Ash, Mike Jorgenson, Matt Foss two along with Jim Jorgenson, Caleb Cornell, and Matt Gandy.
Now for this weeks games we have Baileys Harbor at Institute on Friday night, that's tonight at 8. Pick here will be Baileys to win its 8th game. Big, big game for the Cubs to stay in the playoff pitcher.  West Jacksonport who cannot afford another lost, goes to Egg
Harbor, a hot and cold team who also if they lose will find them on the outside looking in for a playoff berth.  Pick West Jacksonport, 17 to 16 first game won by Ports. Washington Island coming to Maplewood after a red hot game on the Island last week. scored 17 runs.  usually the next week you cannot buy a run.  Maplewood must win if they also want to stay  the playoff hunt.  Won championship last three years.  I pick the Mets. Kolberg to Sister Bay and the Bays a up and down team all  year and with only three wins are out of it. Kolberg one game up and West Jacksonport and must win this one to stay in first place,  1st game 9 to 7. However Adam Bretl is back on the  mound and I do not see anyway the Bays are going to get seven runs in this one. Kolberg to win and stay in first. Won championship last year and want very much to repeat this year.  Sister Bay 4 and 10 last year and I doubt if they will get there this year.  Have Island last game at the Island. Pick, of course, will be Kolberg.

South Wins All-Star Game
By Karen Klement DoorCountyDailyNews.com

In the Door County Baseball League All-Star game yesterday, the South defeated the North in 12 innings 7-6. DCBL insider Jocko Rader reports that Bob Tenor was the winning pitcher and recorded the RBI that would give South the win. Cory Fuller got on
base for the South in the 12th, then stole second to get into scoring position. Tenor's line drive double brought Fuller home and gave the South the win.
Both teams got on the board early. The North took the lead in the first inning 3-2. In the third, the North tallied another run. The South answered back in the sixth with 4 runs to make it 6-4. In the seventh, the North's (and Washington Island's) Criag Gunnlaugson slammed a 2-run homer to tie the game and advance both teams into extra innings. The double by Bob Tenor knocked in the winning run for the South in the 12th inning. Jocko Rader reports that this year's 12 inning battle was one of the longest Door County Baseball League's longest All-Star game ever.

Kewaunee County Legion Headed To State
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 31, 2007

Alex Ackerman allowed just four hits for the Kewaunee County Legion team Monday night when they defeated Antigo 5-1. The Algoma pitcher struck out six and allowed two walks to win the Class AA American Legion baseball regional tournament in Pulaski. The win capped an undefeated tournament for Kewaunee County and gives them an automatic bid in the state tournament in Baraboo. Kewaunee County plays its first-round game at 10:30 a.m. Friday.
A second inning 2-0 lead was more than Antigo could handle. Recently graduated senior from Luxemburg-Casco Ryan "the rocket" Adams belted a two-run single and led the offensive surge. Doug Novak provided a solo homerun in the fifth to finish off a well played tournament for Kewaunee County.

The 25th Annual Kewaunee/Door County Salmon Tournament ended at 5PM on Sunday July 29. During the 9 day long amateur fishing contest over 2,200 anglers purchased tickets and tried to land the largest King Salmon. After last night's board meeting the official winner has been confirmed as, William (Bill) Woehrmann (war-men) of Eau Clair Wisconsin with a 24.96 pound salmon. Woehrmann was fishing with friends Jeff Stepanek and Wayne Christal aboard Stepanek’s 20-foot boat the Wind River out of Baileys Harbor. As the grand prize winner, Woehrmann will be awarded $5,000 cash and an all-inclusive trip to Cabo San Lucas on the Baja peninsula of Mexico.
Tournament Coordinator Jerry MacMillin said response from participants was positive. Anglers caught a lot of fish this year even though the size was down.
(Audio Here)
In second place was another Baileys Harbor fish weighing 23.42 pounds caught by John K. Reinke, Jr. of Germantown, Wisconsin. Reinke was aboard his fathers’ boat, The Banker. Team Reinke has been catching big salmon out of northern Door County for many years and have been frequent K/D tournament prize winners. MacMillin had this to say about the 24.96 pound salmon that won the tournament.
(Audio Here)
MacMillin said that hundreds of fish hit the scales and most were in the 13 to 14 pound range. Once again the tournament will pay out prizes to over 200 places and everyone with a fish 16 ½ lbs. and over can expect to be a winner. Overall, about $40,000 in prizes will be awarded in the next couple of weeks.

Braves Hold One Game Lead Over Ports In DCL
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 30, 2007

Kolberg took another big step forward in the Door County League yesterday by posting an 8-2 victory over Institute. The Braves, now at (10-2), played as if they were entered in a homerun derby and scored seven of their eight runs on the long ball. Chris Wery started things off with a three-run homer in the first inning. Bob Tenor, Mike Wery Jr. and Jesse Miller also hit homeruns.
Adam Bretl notched 12 strikeouts to earn the victory. Institute dropped to (6-6) on the season.
West Jacksonport eked out a 5-3 win against Maplewood in the seventh inning. The Ports had contributions from Mike Stoneman, Dave Jilot, Paul Larsen, Stuart Larsen and Ryan Tanck in the big comeback. West Jacksonport is still in the chase for the top record. The win keeps them one game behind Kolberg at (9-3). Maplewood is tied for fourth with Institute at (6-6).
Washington Island picked up their third win of the season in a 17-7 win over Egg Harbor. It was another win on the Island and it seems visiting teams don't have the edge after the long trip up the peninsula. Len Atkins homered, tripled, singled and scored five times to lead the way. Egg Harbor falls out of the playoff run for the time being at (5-7).
Baileys Harbor played marvelous defense and held Sister Bay in check. The 13-1 final puts the A's in third place at (7-5). Scott Price was 4x5 with a double and three singles. The Bays are now bringing up the rear at (2-10).
